hey ns, my new skis came in the other day . line traveling circus ski. im debating weather or not i should detune the edges on them. what are the pros and cons of detuning edges other than the obvious fact that you wont catch edges as easy. thanks for your help!

Pros: Will be able to slide rails easier, and some people say that detuned edges don't crack as easily on rails.

Cons: Unable to rail turns on hardpack unless it's super soft. Skiing in icy conditions may become super sketchy.

Advice: if you're gonna do rails, detune your edges. They will get dull anyway so it's better to do it yourself.

Take a file and go to town. 45 that shit right off.

At least on skis you have 2 edges. Even if you have them detuned you still have twice the gripping power.

Also on skis the area you actually slide rails is so small compared to the size of your ski.

I can't think of one good reason why I wouldn't straight round my edges under the bindings and around that area.

Hell I only snowboard these days and I still have my edges round. I can't turn for shit but you don't really have that problem on skis.

I guess the only reason I wouldn't detune them is if I didn't hit rails. If you're actually going to hit rails detune them. If you want to detune them because that's what other people do then don't.

Nothing sucks more than shaving into a rail and dying because you hooked an edge.

Even massively more so if you're ever going to hit urbans, backyard shit... Generally most mountains have rails in prime condition, if they get burred, they get shaved down. IF you're going to hit pvc, aluminum, and other urban or backyard shit round them or die.

Good luck.

You still have everything near the tips and the tails. That's the good thing about skis. On a board you slide rails on basically every spot of that edge.

Either you don't grind them off and hook a rail, or you grind them off and can't turn and run into trees. Living on the ice coast without edges is interesting.

Yes, but the underfoot edge is also the most important for turning because that's where most of your weight is.

ya i live on the east coast, so we do tend to have ice ahahah. but its not insanely icy, just some patches and ya i mostly ski my backyard setup. which has pvc, metal and plexi glass. im probobly just going to detune underfoot not much but enough so it saves me from tearing my pvc rail to peices. i appreciate all your comments!

True, but if your skis aren't rockered I'd think you'd still get some solid bite on the other 3/4 of the skis. Plus 2 edges are better than one.

while on a mini vacay out west i had my edges tuned to "park setting" and my skis slide better than ever now.

I get pretty good grip with a pair of rockered skis, running a pretty lengthy detune under foot. Would probably be 1/3-1/2 of the edges running length. Groomed hardpack, I still have loads of grip, but if I hit ice I do washoutif I'm charging hard. Doesn't mean I can't ski ice cautiously.

If you are anywhere in the midwest or east I would suggest NOT detuning them. The reason being that even though it doesnt snow that much it still gets cold as fuck and their is lots of ice, and you will probably get hurt. Also detuned edges dont make it that much easier for rails so if you are having trouble with them detuned edges arent really gonna help. If you are in somewhere with alot of soft snow like tahoe detuning them might be alright.

Detune them if you hit rails. I've detuned mine mine with a file and a rock and I never catch edges on rails but I can still ski fine. And that's with Skis detuned along the whole edge, not just underfoot.

What's the point of detuning the whole edge?

Not sure where the spots are on skis, I know I used to detune my board around the tip and tail to keep from hooking in turns, not sure if that happens with skis. Curious if there are similar problems with part of the ski edge

I could see having sharp edges being a bitch on a snowboard, but with skis it's kinda different. I like having pretty sharp edges around my tips and tails because it really helps with icy runs in the midwest.

You really don't have to worry about catching edges on skis when you're just hitting groomers because you clear that opposite edge easier than what you can on a snowboard. But I make sure to detune the shit out of my underfoot for hitting rails and culverts, you can really hurt yourself if you randomly catch an edge hitting rails and even do knee damage if he catches hard enough.

yes. Judging by that comment you dont ski enough park to bother detuning your edges. Id just leave them be. unless I am wrong. Do what you think you need to do.
