Detune advice?

New to park skiing, have been focused on jumps and spinning. Only have hit boxes and wanting to try rails this season. How should I detune my skis and how will it effect my carving performance. I am on K2 Poachers. I also want to learn butters and shit, should I detune tips and tails?

depends on how much you file the edge. I've had zero issues with carving and detuning will help ESPECIALLY with rails/boxes. My personal experience is I like having detuned edges but it's really up to you.

file down underfoot a bit and a light detune on the tip and tail should have it running great

Just get on3ps they will come detuned plus people will cheer for you on the lift and ask you to hold their babies

Poachers carve pretty good imo

I rode 184s w a heavy detune underfoot and they felt fine

Longer skis have more tuned edge so if you’re short that’s gonna be a tuff one mhm

detune somewhat heavily underfoot. Little to no detune on tips and tails imo. Maybe detune them more if you know you're gonna start doing a bunch of butters right away but I think you should be fine to leave them.

Learn how to use a directional mill bastard file and dull the shit out of your skis at a 45º angle running along the edge. Dull them the most binding to binding but the rest of the ski helps too. Skiing the mtn with really dull skis only forces you to improve your skiing. More knee angle, better balance, actually paying attention to what snow in front of you has some grip in it etc. My edges are incapable of cutting skin and I can carve totally fine on anything that isn't solid ice.

I recently bought a dremel with a grinding bit and it does the best job out of anything i’ve ever used. You don’t need to detune tips/tails for butters because you should be on the inside of your edges when doing them but if they are super sharp it might not be ideal. I personally do a heavy detune on the whole ski because it works the best for the way I ski but if your just getting into hitting rails and you are used to have edges then just do underfoot

Underfoot really didn’t have a crazy effect on carving, I didn’t do my tips and tails though, I’d see if someone who knows how to could do it for you as someone offered to do mine and they cracked twice in the same day

This^^ binding to binding is a better range for a detune as you’re probably going to be using ur skis to pedal on rails when trying to spin

^^^ also add a gummy stone your ski bag to detune further at the mountain if you still need more off. Perfect advice tho

Gummy or diamond stone works great for removing burrs. Rails will sharpen the edges slightly and sharp edges crack. I use a swix diamond stone, would recommend medium or coarse. Good to touch up once every few days if possible.

personally I would detune if it gives u more confidence u wont catch an edge on a butter but if u aint worried j leave em

I use a steel file and a gumstone, makes it lighning fast and makes it smooth with the fine side of the gumstone. I file 5cm or so in front of the binding and around the end of the heel binding. I round it off quite a lot. I always file tips, just start where the rocker starts, and round it quite a lot. Can also file futher down from the nose/tail if the ski feels catchy.
