Desperate for a Media job in Snow Sports

Currently living in the greater LA area, hate it. Struggling to find consistent work in film and photography out here, bored and feel like I'm wasting my time. I have a nagging desire to get back to the mountains and I love nothing more than skiing. I don't even know where to start though. I graduated from Northern Arizona University with a degree in Photography and a minor in film last Spring. I've worked in live TV sports and live eSports production, I've interned for commercial TV production, and I've worked as a grip on film sets. Been shooting photos going on 7 years. Been skiing for 16 years and seriously for the last 4. Had a crew at NAU but I have no reason to stay in Flagstaff since there's nothing for me there work wise. If anyone has any suggestions where to start or who to contact, any help would be greatly appreciated.

my biggest tip, is get out there and fucking hustle. So many kids just sit back and hope for a job to turn up. Go out and actively search for them. Spend any free time calling companies, going door to door, sending emails. Doing this will increase your chances of landing a job and it'll also give you a clearer vision of what you're looking for. There are so many jobs out there for photo and video right now and in my experience, most people that I hear say "I don't know where to start" are just to lazy to start doing the basics, getting their ass off the couch. Good luck.

Also know, there is no perfect job. So if you're looking for that, you'll never find it.

I appreciate the response man. I've worked in both photo and video production. Just struggling with keeping it consistent. Making cold calls isn't a bad idea. In the modern age sometimes I forget about old tactics like that. I'll keep you updated man.

I'd love to hear what you find works best as far as searching. I'm in the same boat, and while I could probably sustain myself after college doing wedding films, I'm just not sure thats the route I want to go. Also from Iowa so really looking to jet west

What are you doing right now to make it happen? No one is just going to give it to you.

There's not a lot of money in skiing, so there are a lot of people fighting for their small piece of a small pie. That isn't to say you can't make it happen. You just need to hustle.

Don't be desperate. Fucking TAKE it.

Just go out there, confidently say, give me a job and PAY ME BITCH. Just like that. Works like a charm.

(don't really do that.. just be confident as hell)

Yeah man sounds like maybe actually sending it and making yourself known is your best/only option if you actually wanna do something you enjoy. Once you really start getting after things for yourself you may realize the kind of rewards that come from it. Go talk to companies, get more than a foot in the door, and grind to find jobs

Same name as my favorite history teacher in high school by the way.

Every resort in the country is hiring a content guy these days. Wait til the fall and there will be dozens of opportunities, if you're flexible on location and pay.

A degree doesn't mean all that much anymore. What are your strengths? Can you edit? Can you shoot? There's no big production crews in snow sports. You need to be able to do it all. In my job I'm expected to produce, run camera, DIT, and most importantly edit and publish. My advice is to shoot a lot, edit a lot, practice storytelling and keep looking for and applying for jobs.

I can do pretty much everything. I'm currently working at Northstar. I applied to a ton of places and sent out resumés to a ton of companies back in August/September.
