Denver Post says we're not progressing

the snowboarder chick who got 5th place in half pipe came to the bottom and saw her score and yelled ''FUCK'' as loud as she could.....i never heard any skiers say anything like that (not that i care)

actually someone who lives in denver and reads his articles said that the author is a snowboarder

i dont know how you can say that a switch corked 1080 opposite mute isnt progressive. who would have imagined that 2 years ago. i like seth, but as far as new and progressive goes, he hasnt pushed his limit too hard fro quite some time. Tanner is a reflection of himself personality wise. If people are going to generalize the entire community based on one skier, then obviously their opinion is negligible and whack.

well, what do they know. it's definitely true about the character of some of those guys (i.e. tanner) being all that great, but not progressing? come on. this guy just doesn't like the sport, or is jealous.

*Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess.*

i think that skiing is definetly progressing a lot, and i dont think that its getting too bad of a rep. Snowboarding has a much worse rep than skiing right now, and you can't expect skiing to get to the popularity of basketball because the financial commitment to skiing is much higher.

i slept with your mom last night

rory silva is a pimp for doing that. how many of you have the balls to flip off espn?! and we dont need a fucking mike jordan in our sport, or even a tony hawk. and didnt a kid that no1 has ever heard of before ( tj schiller) almost sweep the events? thats progression bitchhhhh

w.m.h

First off evanomics he didn't mean progression in that sense ya boner. It is in the sense that our sport won't grow. And secondly did you just say that Seth Morrison hasn't done anything progressive in the last few years. Are you fucking kidding me. I seem to remember him stomping the piss out of a rodeo 7 off a sixty foot cliff in Focused, something no one else has done or will even come close to in the next year. Think before you type.

This year I hope to see more kids incorporating newschool with big mountain riding and getting out of the park.-Matt Levintal

our sport is EXPLODING right now. I don't know what this guys talking about. Last year I saw 4 different people on twintips at my hill the whole season. This year there is regularly that many. Every place I ski I see more skiers in the parks. I disagreed with a lot of that article.

Coming Soon...

it doesnt matter if the newspapers and media like skiing, i mean, who wants it to become totally mainstream like snowboarding anyways?

He is trying to say that freeskiers try to act 'punk'. It is more like gangsters not punks, but they aren't carrying around guns. I don't think kids who ski are causing anymore trouble than a kid who snowboards, skates, bikes etc. Basically, a kid will be a kid no matter what he is into. He is stereotyping every single skier to be a complete screw up. When he watched the US open was it all little kids completely copying Tanner? No..

Praise the lord I’m not a professional skier in the US open. I may have been bashed in an article read by thousands of people like Tanner was. Tanner is a normal person who shouldn’t be anywhere in the tabloids for anything other than skiing.

'I missed the portion of the X Games where a snowboarder flipped double-barrel fingers at the camera after blowing his line in slope style or used profanity to describe a winning run on live television. The skiers who pulled those stunts, on the other hand, are enough to make Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson look cool.' Are you shitting me???? Tanner said 'shit'. Big Fucking Deal. I heard a lot of swearing when I watched the X games coming from every single sport.

I would love to meet up w/ this ignorant ass fuck.

^ OH GOD LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!!!!

I read that article with complete disgust. Some comments were well made, while majority of the article was completely stupid. What in the hell does he expect us to progress too? We already go bigger the snowboarders in the pipe. Not every competition is going to have huge progression in it.

And maybe Armada needs to make snowboards? It been one of the first rider owned specifically twin tip skied companies is just fine the way it is. TONS of snowboard companies came out, and are out like that now, repping the snowboard park movement shit.. I can't believe he fucking said that. What bullshit. NO ARMADA DOES NOT NEED TO MAKE SNOWBOARDS.

ok the guy may have come close to making a valid point about attitude or whatever, but as someone already pointed out he is sterotyping, and all sports have there assholes, also the article was so poorly written i have no clue what point he was trying to reach, he just jumps around between different subjects and says what he doesnt like about our sport,

Whatever valid points he may have had went out the window when he said ARMADA SHOULD MAKE SNOWBOARDS. WE DON'T TELL BURTON TO MAKE SKIS!

He has no sense professionalism.

What a lack of respect.

this is article is just plain retarded. none of our 'leaders' have to change their image, they just have to be true to themselves, because that's what makes a sport like skiing so cool, the freedom of expression. and all alternative sports are like this. moto x has the metal mulisha, snowboarding has the wildcats, skateboarders are way more thugged out than any skiers. do you think skiing is the only sport with pros who smoke pot and have hip hop style? please. the sport will speak for itself in terms of progression, not tanner's interview on espn.

I don't think this guy gets that most of us just don't give a shit. I mean, we wear what's loose and comfy, we talk how we feel like cause what the hell do we care. I mean if all this public image stuff went away, we'd all still go slide rails and hit jumps, and even with that it would eventually start all over again because we're a market to be marketted. Bitches that whine like this writer ain't helpin or changin anything.

And if you ask me Tanner is our Michael Jordan, be him not as humble we don't care, at least I don't, Tanner's awesome. Jordan is what basketball aims and needs, Hall is what skiing needs because that's what we want, not what some bougie writer thinks, go eat a dick.

This has been One Man's Opinion

'Too many rookies, not enough pros' Roy, as we watch our friend Dave try to have style

'What are they gonna do?, show us up, (followed by a lot of laughing)' Roy and I having a convo between ourselves wondering what would happen if a couple boarders in our park got mad

'I could be skiing right now.' Me in my friends car with some ladies at about 12 for lunch, they're singing, I'm bored, they weren't too happy, but they got the message and I went skiing sooner than I could've hoped

'hey baby, it's no good if your friends can't have none' My friend Dan, as he attempts to share and mack a broad at the same time

Well when it boils down to it, no matter how much skiing progresses, it's mostly going to be composed of angst filled teenagers like me, and you. We don't want a clean cut nice guy to look up to. We like assholes becaue we are assholes.

let them think what they want, lets not let skiing get mainstream

Newschool as of right now and into the future is not going to stop progressing it will just progress even faster cause their will always be those kids who are just obsessed and ski for the soul of the sport. They are up in their arms in newschool skiing: they think, breathe, live skiing everyday, day in and day out. As long as we have people like this our sport will never die. I know I only ski about 30 days a year but I can tell you about 8 months outta the year I have my mind FIXED on newschool skiing and I know a lot of other guys on here feel the same way. Like the previous post on here, I feel like im addicted to some wonderful drug cause Im obsessed with skiing so much. I feel like I have a problem. People like this will always have spread the sport to others in a positive way with a positive image.

Keep, Keep on truckin' Yeah...Good Stuff

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

sit booboo sit. Good dog.

Gone are the days where Glen Plake and Greg Strump were the rebels. However, I do miss their intelligent comentary on our sport. Instead of advice on the direction of skiing, todays stars have more to say about how 'I totally stuck that sick line.'That said, it's a shame there wasn't any mantion of stand up skiers like Shane McConkney who is probably the most intelligent man in skiing.

As far as progression goes, we're doing jsut fine there. The boys at Winter X were hesitant to boost the possibel 25 feet out of the pipe when they knew they may crumple on the flats. We've built the better ski, the better boot, the batter pipe. Now we have to start building the better body.

I dont think he knows one important thing about us freeskiers. he doesnt know that most of us like the underground feel of freeskiing. How most of us alienate our sport as much as possible. I think a lot of us are afraid to 'sell out' like snowboarding, i know i dont want to. I really dont care what other people think about my sport. So whatever you have to say, fuck it, doesnt matter, becasue if skiing dies snowboarding will still be around andparks will still be built. I have love for my sport, not love for other people to watch and obsess over me.

Hey Everybody-

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for all the support of the Open in the face of Scott Willoughby's attacks in the Post. It's pretty frustrating for sure because that story is overshadowing everything that was accomplished there:

1) TJ Schiller's out of nowhere victory in Slope and 2nd place in Big Air (switch 1260!!)

2) Putting 140 skiers through Slopestyle qualifying, a record (this after selling out the spot available in the event in 48 hours back in mid November)

3) Record media coverage for the event including NBC, Outdoor Life Network, Fox Sports Network, the CBS Morning Show, MTV, Spike Network, Eurosport, Channel 8 (France's biggest station), and over 150 registered press from around the world.

Anyway, I could write a novel here about how many mistakes were in both articles, but I have to say that the 'Seth Morrison not at the Open' thing made me laugh out loud. But I did really want to make what I think is an important point:

Overwhelmingly, all of the top pros in freeskiing right now are great people with a passion for the sport that is as pure as anybody's. Isolated incidents happen in freeskiing just as they do in ALL sports, but the most upsetting thing about this article was the perception that our top stars like Tanner are selfish, conceited, and don't care about the history of the sport.

I've known Tanner since he was 15, and we have a great friendship. There isn't a person in this world who loves to ski more than him. He never asked for all the attention he is getting, but he also doesn't take it for granted, and he is fully aware of the pressure and responsibility that comes with being partly responsible for the image and progression of skiing. That's a pretty heavy load to carry around, have a camera in your face every times you put on a pair of skis, and having EVERYBODY watching your every move even if you are just skiing around the mountain and not jumping. Tanner is a very passionate person and I have seen this get this pressure get the best of him at times, but I would challenge anybody to put themselves in Tanner's shoes, take on all that pressure, and have a great attitude about it 100% of the time. 99.9% of the time, Tanner is the best role model this sport could ask for, and the 1/10th left makes him human, which I'll take over robots like Alex Rodriguez anyday.

So when this article labeled him as it did, I took offense to that and only that. If Scott Willoughby can't appreciate the Open and everything it contributes to the sport of skiing, that is his loss. I don't care about that. But to make the comments he made about Tanner and the other skiers in his column without knowing anything about them or even talking to them is wrong.

I should also say that I do know Scott and have worked with him on many stories for years. I have given him people to talk to and interview for his articles and he usually is very good about fact checking and getting the story right. This time he didn't do either of those things, and it's disappointing.

Well, thanks again for supporting Freeze and the U.S. Open. For those of you coming to the East Coast Open in Okemo, we'll see you there. And thanks to Jerk for letting me use his username and password to get in on this forum. I might have to register myself I guess.

It's not about skill progression, it's not about being a role model, it's about having some personality. Everyone's pretty much the same, or they appear so. At the top on camera they bop their head to whatever they're rockin to. Then they do their run, get to the bottom throw their arms up and pop their ski and wave to the crowd. There's no characters. Unless you've been following someone in movies and comps for a year or two there's really no one to 'cheer' for, you may cheer their style but you dont cheer them. It's just a formula.

The sport needs life.
