democracy

noun

1: the political orientation of those who favor government by the people or by their elected representatives

2: a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them

3: the doctrine that the numerical majority of an organized group can make decisions binding on the whole group

But does it work as it should?

Consider voter turn outs recently. What about despotic measures in countries like Canada that have survived for more than a century? How can one politcal party rule a country, so much so that it can go to war of its own accord? Will enough people ever take an active interest to create a true democracy? Or, will some enter a brave new world of rebranded despotism?

Answers, opinions, rants, flames, lets see what you got.

my advice is to pick out the very few of us here on NS who are actually old enough to know/care about true politics and PM us rather that post a new thread about it. it's going to turn into nothing but short little comments, some of which will involve statements such as "fucking redneck conservatives..." and/or "gay ass liberals...". know what i mean? so yeah.. not to shoot you down or anything, but this won't evolve into a mature discussion.

well i do have an opinion about that. but i would NEVER mix politics with skiing! would you guys go to a porn site and talk about this? no, because there is better shit to do there too! there are plenty of other places on the internet where you can argue to the death about this shit, so quit shitting where i ski!!!!!!!!!!

canada is run by a frat party of self-serving goons at the moment. Regardless of what the people want, every action in ottawa is based on staying in power or getting in power.

i think that the minority government is working simply because of the want to stay in power. every one wins

In Canada, there is an opposition party that convinces the other members of the other partie to refuse the decision made by the partie in power.

Democraty isnt a bad system, its a systemwith flaws.

People commonly wont protest if their lives are comfortable. People honestly don't care unless something has a very direct effect on their daily life. For an example, there is loud opposition to the current polices of the US president...but does the opposition accomplished much? No. Thats because they really aren't trying. The current Democratic party, for example, has a weak platform and put up a very weak candidate for presidential election. Why isn't the current US government more balanced? Because the problem is not a big as it is perceived...or that it is not perceived to be big. The conservatives are trying harder than the liberals to hold control. Thats why we have a "controversial" president for two terms.

People are not motivated enough to take action. Voter turnout is small because: a) they don’t care enough b) they don’t know enough c) both. People will protest much more when their lives and personal liberties are encroached, thats just not happening right now. Circumstances are not dramatic, therefore dramatic change should not be expected. People will NEVER take initiative if they are not motivated to do so.
