SUMMIT COUNTY — Summit County Sheriff's deputies have ticketed half a dozen people for possessing small amounts of marijuana at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area parking lot since ski season started Oct. 9.

“If you're going to flaunt it in our face and do stupid things while we're on foot patrol, you sometimes get caught,” Sheriff John Minor said Tuesday. “This is not uncommon the first few ski days.”

Four of the summonses — each for possession of less than an ounce — were the result of deputies on foot patrol noticing the odor of burnt marijuana. Two were issued to friends of a man who was shouting expletives across the parking lot, according to reports from the sheriff's office.

Breckenridge attorney and marijuana-decriminalization advocate Sean McAllister said the incidents exemplify how local law enforcement continues to ignore the will of the voters.

“It's just not believable to me that the courts, police and district attorney's office would use resources to prosecute people in this county which is 62 percent in favor of (decriminalization),” he said.

In 2006, Summit County voted 62 percent in favor of an unsuccessful statewide referendum (Amendment 44) to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana for private use.

“Clearly these people are not endangering other people and should have been left alone,” he said.

Until recently, Sheriff's Office reports seldom included marijuana busts on foot patrol; the drug is more frequently confiscated from people pulled over for other violations on local highways.

Minor said A-Basin is a family ski area and it's his deputies' duty to watch for people who break the law.

“It's not uncommon to have foot patrols in the area from time to time for a whole bunch of reasons: That's our job,” he said.

He said the Sheriff's Office tries to have as much a presence as possible, particularly when limited runs are open — in case of skier incidents, thefts and other ski area issues.

The recent incidents occurred on Oct. 9 and the following two Saturdays.

“Don't attract attention if you're going to smoke dope, especially in a public place, because we're going to bust you,” Minor said.

Amounts confiscated ranged from about 2 grams to about 14 grams. Those who received summonses were not arrested.

Breckenridge residents will vote Nov. 3 whether to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana for private use. In 2006, 72 percent supported Amendment 44.

McAllister said he hopes that after the election, “police both in Breckenridge and the county as a whole will think about it a little harder before they waste taxpayers' dollars on people with smaller quantities than an ounce of marijuana.”

I hate how everyone over the age of 30 calls weed "dope", it makes it sound terrible.

for real dude, dope is heroin.
But Im super stoked about this, about any place doing this. Soon everyone else will follow, it will just take a few years.

yeah i can't see it becoming legal in my lifetime as much as i thought it would. which is fine with me cause its always avalible and easy to fine. you just got to be stealth about it. and keep it personal.

The tihng with making it legal is it will still be a federal law and you can still get busted for it.

WTF is the world coming to if pot is legalized there will be a LOT of shit going down the government needs to be more strict about pot

i mean I shouldnt bitch but who in the hell cares if people toke up before they ski. like the artile said" they are not hurting anyone.

it has a different affect on everyone. and it doesnt corrupt shit. i live in montana and both my parents blaze and there normal as fuck. and successful as well. so i disagree strongly. and if you have so much negativity towards it being decriminalized then dont post about it.

haha gives us ideas and shit.

so if it gives me ideas, shouldnt fucking science be illegal, or maybe talking, fuck, maybe we should make every book illegal too...

but now im thinking too much, i should stop.

That's dope that they might decriminalize dope! haha but in all seriousness its stupid that they bust people for that in the beginning of the season... what a buzz kill

for some reason NS is failing and wont let me quote the "who the hell cares if you toke while skiing" or whatever so ill just copy paste my reply to that here

I really dont care if people toke before they ski or while they ski or

whatever if they are doing it away from families, but its really,

really annoying when people do it on the gondola or lift when im skiing

with my dad(yeah i ski with my dad sometimes sup). Its incredibly

awkward and 9/10 times the kids toking just act like idiots.

obviously...im stating that older people use it to refer to as marijuana. and unger people use the word as slang, not even referring to the drug. sheesh

I am surprised that you say that. If you look at really how long your life is anything could happen. It was made illegal about 50 years ago. Seems to me that it might be coming back around.

Weed is about to be completely legal for anyone over 21 in California, they are gona start treating it like alc. Its on the ballot next year

out of all honesty, i dont smoke, but the majority of people want to legalize it, and according to the way the gov is set up, this means that it should be legal

wtf? u r a dumb ass no science isnt an illeagle substance or a drug and we read and learn from books. We dont learn from pot. books are not drugs. You sir are a dumb ass

He was addressing your statement about how it makes you think and shit and corrupts you. Weed doesn't do that at all. He was arguing that by your argument against weed, then everything that makes you think differently and maybe "corrupts" you should be illegal. This includes science, revolutionary books, etc.

I think you're the dumbass, you say that you have blazed a lot and that it corrupts people. So you are corrupted and think and shit. I actually do learn while high, but not book stuff. I learn about myself, and can see things about my personality and interactions with others that are suppressed when I'm sober.

Also, you suck at spelling, IMO you're pretty dumb.

And do you have a problem with alcohol?

You're right, nothing noteworthy ever came out of drug consumption. We can never, ever, learn from drugs.

agreed dude, I have a couple of friends that smoke pot, I gotta tell you they are so fucking dumb. People just think shits a free for all.

shit i had another question for colorado residents;

isnt weed available for medical useage in CO? i assumed it was decrimmed first, then made medicaly available. or was it jsut med, and now is getting decrimmed by town? cause in NY its all decrimmed but no med. and it was a state thing getting decrimed, not by town.

Smoking weed in public is illegal even in amsterdam. As long as you are not a fool nobody mines but if you are yelling "exlpicitive deleteds" across the lot then you got it coming. Decriminalization should'nt mean that you can do what you want with weed. It means if your acting as a decent citizen and smoking it should'nt matter. Legalization would mean you can do what you want with it, but much like a public intox you still can't do whatever hell you want.

na, im pretty sure its a fine, and its up to 100 grams. which increases teh stupidity of just decrim, if youre kinda allowed to have that much, it seems like it should just be legal.

cant be screwed doing a proper post, but these days there really are no fair arguments against pot, which is why so many places around the world are finally easing the laws prohibiting it. people say its a gateway drug, but this is only somewhat true because people cant buy their bud from a legitimate source, and have to buy from dodgy street dealers who offer them harder drugs instead/as well. check out a movie called The Union: The Business Behind Getting High, it will open anyones eyes to the innumerable benefits of medicinal marijuana, decriminalisation or legalisation
