Decent starter skateboard

So I know nothing about skateboarding, the closest i've got to it is snowskating. Anyways I have a kickass West 49 skatepark right beside my college and I wanna get a skateboard. Can someone throw a few decks at me that are fairly decent in price and quality?

just get a blank deck (nothing on it, just wood). they are cheaper than all other decks and are just as good, a perfect starter deck

i started out on a BAM model since he is who got me interested in skating in the first place. Ive been through two other decks in my career and my heart belongs to BAM decks

well if i wanted to buy decks that were three years old and probably not made anymore I would have specified that.

get some blank wheels, i heard destructo has some good trucks, but i personally like grind king because they are lighter. for a deck it doesn't matter since your a beginner, get a blank if u want.

thats peoples favourite skateboard which would mean the best ones not to great for a starter who might not know if he likes the sport but good try bud

i started off learning on blanks and i never looked back. Honestly if u wanna waste $20 more on a pro name deck be my guest but blanks are the shit.

hatchskis is officallly +4 on this thread.

ok my advice to the question giver. go to www.activemailorder.com or www.ccs.com I prefer active and just buy a complete. it really doesn't matter what the graphic is. the real question for you though is the width. i ride a 7.75. it depends what your shoe size is. i would say .0-8 shoe size=7.5 board. 7-12 shoe is a 7.75 board. 10.5+ is a 8 inch wide board. work with that. its cool if you pick your buy on a graphic, i don't think skateboard decks have the technology skies have in them.

Get any wheels you want, as long as they arent bigger than 54 mm cause then thats just huge vert wheel steeze.

The best trucks for quality on the market right now are deffinatly either Thunders, Independent, or Venture trucks. thats my word of advice for 7 years of skateboarding. mostly all other brands I have had multiple problems with.

As for decks its all about prefrence.. so basically your going to have to start somewhere and gain an opinion of your own. It's all about how you like the shape and width and concave and how steep and long you want your nose and tail to be. I would suggest starting off with a blank deck of somekind.. something cheap. that doesnt necessarily mean its got less quality than a professional board.

as for bearings, just take my advice and get bones red Bearings. cheapest and best bearings anyone will ever have.

hardware doesnt matter.

and you really dont need risers

or any of that extra bling

hopefully i have been a help to you.

but it deffinatly is going to be a bit expensive at first when you buy a complete. just like skiing and all other extreme sports.

totally agree on the wheels. But are you sure on the trucks. i'm a pretty sucky skater and i basically gave it up but i had a pair of independents for a while and i thought they were super heavy compared to my furys.

^well if 0.5 pounds of a difference really affects your skating then.. so be it. im not talking weight thuogh, im talking quality. and indy's are a pretty solid truck. they will last you a long time. and if thats krashed's idea of not spending money then thats probably a wiser decision on his part.

Also Krashed, I'd like to add, when you go to a skateshop to purchase a set up, take your time. ask to see as many boards and sizes you want, put the decks on the floor and step on them with board feet. get a nice firm feeling out of them all and decide in your mind what feels best under your feet to you.

for a deck id get a wide board. like 7.75-8 inches. for trucks get royal or tenser size 7.75 those are what i like. and for wheels go wit 52 or 51 mm. u really need to just try out different shit before u really know what u want to ride. good luck

i just broke a friends board doing a boneless down a gap thing, so i just bought a totally blank setup for $42 shipped. we'll see what happens

thanks for the help everyone including Mat. im gonna check out west 49 and breeze sometime this week.

i nver liked indies...im super stoked on my thunders though. i had destructos and i usde to like them, but if your a big guy youll make them bend too much

I just got a compleate setup from my local skateshop.. it was only $100 all up the trucks are pretty budget and I've since got new bearings and removed the risers, but its got a good deck and that was important for me as you get a beter feel for things if you're comfortable with your deck. I knew I wasnt going to be grinding anywhere in the immediate future so I wasn't too worried about the trucks and im fairly light so I wasnt going to have any issues with bending them. So yeah if you're just starting out a compleate is quite a good way to go. Also if you talk to the guys at your skateshop they'll probably be able to hook you up with some secondhand gear pretty cheaply but they dont always have it avaliable so going back to the shop all the time is the key there, get to known by the guys at the shop and they'll keep stuff aside for you.. just dont pester them and piss them off by constantly badgering them.

i still stand by the decision of baker but i think i just read that you bought a blank anyways, but get royal trucks to i like mine a lot i broke a pair of monsters or whatever and i broke some destructo trucks but these royals have lasted a while, also for bearings get Bones red's they are like $15 and they are actually really smooth, and i always personally get spitfire wheels, but get the smallest size you can find
