Death to terrain parks?

I see no mention of it on any of their websites. The only thing is that at the boyne website this is what it says they have in their parks:

Take a look at all the BOYNE Terrain.

Boxes, with varying levels of difficulty

Rails

Pipes/Super-pipe

Quarter Pipes

It never mentions jumps. That would be so shitty if they didn't build any jumps.
 
i talked to the boyne park manager last spring and he said because of some large lawsuite out west, they will not have any large jumps. not sure.
 
That lawsuit was outrageous. It was one of the major topics at MSAA or whatever. Resorts are changing a lot to make things safer, and better on their end so they don't get sued.
 
okay, overstatement. the jump line definitely didn't suck though...

if this shits true, i guess we'll just be building more than ever now.
 
maybe it was the fact that it was a pow day and i couldn't get speed for all of the jumps but i don't know what's gunna happen for the pros and pow tour this year at boyne
 
i was there for the pros and pow tour, i had a really good time on that jump line though. we just stayed in the park and pipe most of the day, then later my friend won a suit by doing like sixty woman pushups. cheap.
 
oh shit that was your friend? haha i think he lied for that outfit cuz i know my friend did like 40 but we were like 65 or some shit like that

So Im 98% sure this is true. Ive heard all those guys taking that. 1/2 pipe and rails only. Riders will have to support the little guys that still cater to the jumpers. I know Schuss is still planning to have jumps and a new 1/2 pipe
 
from what i read, the jump had been unsafe for a week or so. Something like 3 or 4 people had been hurt on it and yet, the jump had yet to be changed. In my opinion, this was entirely the managements fault. In my past experience, almost anytime some one gets hurt, they look at the jump they got hurt on and try to shape it differently to make it more safe. Management needed to take a look at that jump and see what was wrong with it and make sure the park builder fixed what was wrong.
 
good call. i'm still trying to figure out why boyne would start with their michigan resorts??and crystal mountain too???or am i missing something vital.....
 
lets hope that doesnt cause SnowTrails to not have jumps without a dope park what r we all going to do? Snowtrails kills it every year with a park its all 100% rider say so park with the best cat operator ever! with those = best park
 
Heres the deal... the law suit out west was/is a big one. This has gotten every mgt and park builders attention. The problem is accidents happen in the park. happen on the bunny hill, happen falling across the parkinglot, etc. Its the different nature, and numbers of the accidents in the park that catches peoples eye, even though the % of accidents is probably in ratio with the number of users. Insurance companys in the industry are fine with tabletop jumps, still. All they ask is for more detailed maintenance logs, increased patroling, stuff to cover our ass with. With Boyne, Ive heard they are self-insured, so a $14 million lawsuit would be a blow to wellbeing of the company. Taking out jumps elimates some risk. The others have jumped on board, why?? Enough phone calls to those in charge may help. Riding responsibally this winter will help. Places nationwide will be watching this, and most likely be building stuff more moderate than extreme. The problem with alot of riders is the fact that they see this shit of videos and think every jump is too small, or every jump needs to be X-game size. The fact is a 30 foot table is big enough for 95% of riders in the park. Don't expect to see the monsters tables that only a few clear after staight lining the thing.
 
i agree that management should have changed it, but you need to know what your getting yourself into before you hit a jump. and part of the resopsiblity of hitting a jump, i feel, is taking responsibility for what happens afterwords too. its not managments fault that you didnt know wtf you were doing and that you decided on your own to hit the jump.

now it looks like things will be fucked over for a lot of us in Northern Michigan. such fucking bullshit
 
I can understand that...but still the question of why Crystal Mountain and other michigan resorts were singled out...? And plus, Crystal management already won't let will (the park guy) build ANY gap jumps, kickers, jumps exceeding 25 ft, etc. due to the family factor of that place. I feel like i'm being personally ass raped here.
 
this shit really blows...my friend who works patrol at boyne mountain told me about a kid who became paralyzed in the pipe this year due to poorly shaped walls. So im sure having this lawsuit really pushed them over the edge.
 
I agree, but what we had was still better than nothing.

And to midwestjibbin, shut up. Think about that guy, he wasnt trying to fuck us all over. Think about his family and his friends and himself. Getting paralyzed is not cool at all.
 
yeah man its not the guy its his insurance they probably made him sew because his insurance was loosing alot of money on the deal. its a shame that are world is coming to this that people are so greedy. sooner or later we are not going to even be able to ski because the insurance will cost to much to run the place. SOOO im moving to Canada
 
Its up to the more experienced terrain park riders to educate the younger and first timers in the park about safety, smart style ideas and give them pointer and also point them to the smaller park if available. We all can now see what 1 big accident can cause. Its kind of one of those if we all stick together type of things. Personally, It sucks accidents happen, health care isnt cheap, and everything you do, youre taking a risk. He chose to bomb the hill and overshoot the jump. No one told him to go faster or bigger. It could happen to anyone who dosent take the park seriously. How many times have you just entered the park and hit the jumps before scouting them out?? If you did, the decesion to hit the jump, whether it was built 'correctly' or not, is all yours.

Im just saying boyne already had someone paralyzed this year and this lawsuit probably made them worry about someone that choose to sue if they were paralyzed. I felt shitty just when he told me the story about the kid and defiantly not trying to disrespect anyone.

That really sucks for you guys in the LP. You will just have to come visit us in the UP instead.

Good to hear from you.

Here is the scoop - we will have a great terrain park this winter, but it will not contain any table top jumps. It will have the top jump at the entrance to the park located further down the slope so there is a better inrun, more rails than ever, an intermediate pipe and a new boardercross section that will be longer than the one we had last year on Southwest Passage. The only things we are taking out are the 4 big tabletop jumps we had last year. This is due to two reasons: the cost of building, maintaining and operating them and the risk associated with their use. The Superpipe will also be back.

To the best of my knowledge, every ski area in Northern Michigan is not building any tabletop jumps due to the above reasons.

We'll still be building and maintaining a great terrain park, but the tabletops cost to much to operate and carry to much risk to keep. Please give me a call if you would like to discuss further.

I don't know how tabletops are more expensive than a halfpipe but whatever. The little baby skiercross course they had last year was fun as hell despite it only having two banked turns and some rollers. Hopefully they make it a little bigger if its going where the jumps used to be.
 
Even though i wont be there this winter... Marquette is actually expanding their jump size this year! We're gettin the chute jumpline back which means 3-4 good sized jumps. Last time chute was the jumpline... it went: 1. Step-up/stepdown excite bike jump. 2. 80 footer. 3. 55 footer. and 4. 60 footer.

I cant say if theyll be this big this season, most likely a little smaller bc of the amount of snow it takes, but MQT will be going off for all your big air needs this winter.
 
I just got done talking to the local guys at Mont Ripley and all our jumps are staying/more. They said from their understanding of the situation it is due to insurance companies getting scared. I guess most resorts are insured by 1 or 2 companies. luckily Ripley is self insured. My standard family trip to nubs this year is looking iffy now.
 
OOPS, i have no idea what happened with the last post. He said ripley might end up being the only jump line in michigan. Pete is going to be back this year also, so with the both of us park building, shit's going to get done sill fast, and well. We're working on making the jumps more step up ish, to ensure maximum float, and safety. If you disagree, look at the olson jump. That was the safest jump ever, because if people went down on it, they weren't falling a ton and all their momentum was going foreward, which lets them slide instead of thud. Hopefully we can work it out. we got aton of new guns where the jump line is, so park should go faster, and better. since ripley is insured by michigan tech, it's not under the same pressure to remove tables. Someone should confirm mqt though, i hear their insurance is going to throw a fit about big jumps. if thats the case, looks like instead of me visitng you guys, you can all come ski here.
 
they are not completely getting away with jumps they are just going to get rid of tables.they will still have step ups and downs
 
except for crystal thats all they ever had. and barely that. this just in though, i heard from a guy inside crystal that a park team is in the works and details will be out soon, that would ensure more scheduled comps. allso it appears that they may copy nubs and do a friday rail jam/comp. deal

They are still plannng to have the 3 jump line as always at Schuss this year. I know its not the best because of the mellow run but...
