So im heading out to whistler with 3 friends in just over a week. I leave boston the 20th, will be skiing whistler monday-thursday.

Soo a few questions...

How are the parks looking? Naturally as an EC-er I will be hitting a fair amount of park while im out there. I have been there once before and remember the big blackcomb park being pretty nice but that was a while back and I was young.

I know you guys aren't stoked on your snow this year as you had an epic year last year, but where should I go to get the best stuff? Mostly inbounds.. we dont have avy gear and or knowledge and I know the BC out there is pretty unstable right now. Where is the best skiing found on the mountain?

And last question... the 2 younger of us (2 17 year olds) only own park skis. We are both good skiers with racing backrounds and such but now we are park rats and thus, have skinny, dull edged park skis. Would it be massively better if we rented some fatter skis while we were out there? Any good places to do this in or around the village?

 
alright, just cause im board, for some reason only looking at this forum tonight, or the fact that I am originally from the boston area...i will answer your questions.

Park is good this year, i dont ski park anymore and cannot comment on the current setups but I have lapped through a few times and things are looking good. The 17 year olds might need legal guardians to sign a waiver get in the big park on blackcomb tho, I would look into this. They have been making quite a bit of snow for the big features so thats covered.

If you plan on actually skiing, I would rent something mid-fat with edges. Anywhere in the village rents stuff, so dont worry about getting a certain store name, the village is flooded with rentals. As to where to ski, get a map, make friends on the lift and ask around, no one is going to post their secrets online. Cover is thin, so even things that would normally be inbounds and fair game are out of bounds due to coverage.

Smart move on the backcountry, please dont go out there if you dont have a beacon/shovel/pack/probe/partner/map and know how to use them. Last weekend I saw a couple take a nasty spill down a chute on north flute (techincally inbounds) and had to carry them out.

blackcomb glacier was decent after the last recent 11cm snow but got tracked real fast. Still worth a ski if youre from the east and havent skied anything as wide open and long as that. And also be real careful for hidden rocks.
 
Park skis will do fine up there on all mountain, just because there's no snow so you wont need to float on anything. And second I recommend you ski park most of the time, but hey go explore it's a big mountain with lots of cool things, but be careful of rocks
 
The park on blackcomb is always good to me even when its icy, i dont go to the whistler one alot

i dont go to the one on whisler much
 
Last week there was decent snow around 7th Heaven + Peak/Symphony areas - got tracked super past though

Overall, Blackcomb seemed to be better than Whistler
 
print off the highest level park waiver. its somewhere on www.whistlerblackcomb.com. the blackcomb blue is good right now. the jibs used to be lacking but it is now a good time. however if you solely want to jib rails whistler might be a little better. but hey, why come from the east to ski park? why not ski something you dont do every day.
