Dear Gentleman That I Tanked at 50mph

Last Friday I skiing in Wisconsin with my some of friends. Conditions were good, sun was shining, pretty warm. Park is still pretty minimal due to the low amount of snow here in the midwest. After spending most of the morning hitting the few rails in the park, we ventured out into the rest of the "expansive" Cascade Mountain. We were tearing up the sides of the runs in the delicious "midwest pow". At the end of the day we were riding up the lift with my friend's dad and he pulled out his phone and he had some app that told him his top speed. He said he got up to 46mph earlier in the day and he wanted to beat it. He challenged us to a race and we all agreed. In my head I was thinking that this would be my last run, but I made sure not to vocalize that, because we all know what happens. We headed over to the steepest run on the hill and turned our tips down and bombed. There was one dude ahead of us taking his time and getting some turns in on the left of the hill, but the right side was clear. I sat back on the back of my skis and barreled ahead of everyone else by at least 20ft. I saw the dude in front making a cut to the left and I figured I would blast by him with plenty of space. However, as soon as I thought that, he turned and headed over to the right side where I was bombing down. I veered right to give him space, but I didn't cut speed. The bottom of the hill splits into a "Y" with each side of the split heading towards a different chair lift. I was pretty sure he would stay on the left side of the split as he was headed that direction. But in an instant the dude decided to go to the right side and cut right in front of me. I still thought I had the space to get by and continued barreling forward, but at the last second he cut even harder. It all happened so fast and I didn't have time to even yell, let alone stop. My only choice was to attempt to squeeze through the narrowing gap or blast into the trees. I chose to try to make the gap, but just as I thought I would make it, he seemed to put on an extra burst of speed. We collided, as I blindsided him from behind. My skis hit the front of his and both of us ejected out of our bindings just as we impacted so our knees were safe. Luckily I was on the back of my skis so rather than completely body slamming the guy I merely slide tackled him at highway speed. I later learned from the app that my friend's dad was going 48 (breaking his record) and I was a good 20 ft in front which means I was at least going 50mph. Next thing I know he is on top of me unintentionally grinding my face into the snow with his torso as we slide down the hill for a good 20 feet. When we finally come to a stop, I jerk up and see the guy sitting beside me with a face of total shock and surprise. The guy was at least like late 50s maybe even 60s, and I immediately thought that I had probably just completely broken him. I started apologizing profusely. His look of shock twisted into a grin and he said, "wow, that was quite the ride!" and then started laughing. After apologizing a few million times more, and laughing it off, the guy told me that it was his fault for not checking before merging over. I of course admitted that it was totally my fault, but he denied it. Finally, he agreed it was 50/50. But I think it was at least 75% my fault for going so fast. He was a totally awesome dude. He said he was completely fine and asked if I was good. I said yes, and he put his skis back on and skied back down to the lift for another run. I was so surprised he was ok and I thanked God for that. I've been knocked unconscious for 5 minutes, torn my labrum in my shoulder, torn ligaments in my ankle all while skiing before, but this was the most scared I had ever been, cuz I thought I killed a man. Anyways, to the dude I almost killed, you are probably a little old for newschoolers, but if you see this, please once again know that I am soooooooooo sorry and sooooo glad you all good. Keep on skiing you grey bearded bad ass.

Also, I'm really pissed I didn't get any footy of this... I had my stuff with me, but I never got it out cuz the park was pretty lame. Def would've been sick to have headcam footage of this 50mph blindside slide tackle.

Im sorry but no ones gonna read this

I read it, definitely worth the read, haha same thing happened to me about a week ago except I was in the older guys shoes and we were both only going 35mph (according to snowcru)

so you accidentally hit someone while skiing, and he forgave you? why does this need an essay written about it

On this same day I had another encounter with an older guy that did not go so well. I've had problems with this other dude before, we call him blueberry cuz he has a blueberry colored jacket and is there all the time, always by himself, lonely grumpy old fart. Two years ago the old pos wacked with with his poles three times so hard it left bruises on my arm because I stepped under the rope that cordons of the lift to let someone pass. Rather than just saying "you shouldn't be in there" (The lift workers were totally fine with me being there) he proceeded to wack me even after he got me attention. I was so close to punching him in the face. But I cussed him out, told him to use his words like a gown adult rather than slap people like a faking baby and walked away. This time I was waiting in the lift line with a friend and I undid his binding with my pole, just messing around. Apparently bluberry was behind me and didnt like me having fun. So he decided to jab me with his pole in my back. I ignored the first jab cuz I thought it was a kid on accident, but then I felt it again this time even harder. I turned around ready to tell what I thought was a clumsy kid to get it together, and I see fucking blueberry standing there. He tells me, "you're gunna get kicked out". I was not having it. I almost just slugged him, but I decided to take a deep breath and rip him apart verbally instead. Since this is already getting I'll spare details and just say that after hearing what I had to say and what I thought about him, he rode down one more time and then left. Prolly shit his pants and had to go get some more Depends.

Damn op you should write a novel about your experiences.

TLDR: Op often gets assaulted by another old man who he calls blueberry

It's beyond any doubt that it was 100% your fault. I cannot fathom how you can begin to consider for even one second that this was less than 100% your fault.

should have bought him a drink at the end of the day

There is a 0% chance op is legally able to buy alcohol. Mostly due to the fact that there is a 0% chance op is over 21.

Glad nobody got hurt, I have to say hitting somebody going full speed is my biggest fear on the mountain

Honestly it was probably better than going into the trees, because you would die if you hit a tree at 50 mph.

It was scary man. I saw hit coming, but it all happened so fast that I didn't have time to react or even yell.

Morale of the story: don't race down hill with people in front of you, even if you think they will stick to one side. Also, don't ever race on your last run, even if you don't say it.

To the OP. I'm glad everything is okay. He was dumb for cutting across the hill but you simply can't hit someone from behind. You have to make sure you won't hit someone and you can't be wrong. It is simply not worth it to win a race. Live and learn, you are really lucky this did not end badly. This is why I don't open it up on crowded groomers, although it does not sound like this was crowded. I ski Mammoth 2-3 weekends a month and the groomers get crowded. I have my fun on the steeps so I don't mind making slalom and gs turns on the groomers. Just take it as a learning experience.

To the guy getting whacked by Blueberry, don't punch him, just tell him not to whack you with the ski pole again or you will tell the ski patrol and have him charged with assault. It would be a pussy move, and obviously you would never actually do it, but it should shut him up. Don't punch him unless he punches you first, as that will get you arrested and banned from your mountain. Trust me, socking him is not worth it, you could get in a whole lot of trouble and this idiot is not worth that. Please don't hit him, you may seriously regret it if you do.

Because, as we see with professional racers, leaning back is the best way to ski at high speeds...

Paragraphs op, paragraphs!

To that extent, it was 100% your fault. Glad everyone walked away smiling and laughing. If someone took me out like that from behind, Im coming up swinging for sure.

Also, FUCK blueberry guy, fuck him right in his stupid blueberry face.

Ya I realize it was totally my fault. I put myself and the guy in front of me in danger. We are both lucky we skied away fine. Regardless of the fact that he darted in front of me, he has the right of way and I should've compensated. It just totally seemed like he was staying on the left and I just didn't give him enough space.

And yah blueberry is the worst. But yah punching him or whatever would've been the wrong thing to do for many reasons, mainly I could get charged with assault even though he touched me first. I was just sooo00 mad because this was the first time he attacked me for no reason. If it happens again, I'm going straight to ski patrol.

Are my paragraphs better?

I was confused about that too at first, but I think he meant he was sitting down on his skis? op can you confirm?

Last time I was there there were only 2 rails 1 corrugated tube a tiny butterbox and like a 5 foot jump with a terrible landing.

Wow I waited a week to read this because of how long it was, but I am really glad I ended up reading it. Good on both of you for staying stoked and appreciating what skiing is about, not getting mad, forgiving and forgetting.

Why is NS so anal about reading somewhat long posts.

Because paragraphs, just like punctuation, were invented to break up and separate thoughts, stories, facts, ect. It also just makes it so much easier to read.

Not sure bro, but I'm there like every other friday. But yah, park is really sucky this year... The best run I had there was going through mogul monster when they had all the snow piled up and it was roped off. That was a blast, I was sending it like Candide but then the patrolies got mad.

I'll hit you up next time i go tho. shoot me a friend request or whatever.
