there are probably three active cults on ns. people need to start joining them, one of the best parts of ns. there are some good ones out there like;

Sticker cult:

get free stickers

Trick Tip Forum:

learn new tricks

Movie Maker Cult:

for all you filmers to discuss what you do

and many more. i'm just making this thread because nobody goes on cults anymore and it makes me sad:(
 
I truthfully only go to LM.

Only cult I spend time in. Maybe if there was more structure or active people in cults i would be more apt to post in them.
 
Ya I only ever browse through LM and 420.

When I started the indie lovers cult that was actually very active for the first month or so and then just died off.
 
LM is the only one I ever use. I feel like it's by far the most visited. We should try to revamp indie lovers, I didn't hear about it until after it's heyday unfortunately.
 
i think the issue isn't so much the cults themselves. everyone wants to use cults, but nobody does because the vast majority are dead. so they think, why bother checking? nothing is new on there.
 
Moderators should OK any new cults - cults have been totally devalued because there are so many of them - people make them, and most of them have 1 or 2 members, so people assume cults will be shit.

If moderators ensured only worthwhile cults were created, and cults had descriptions etc, it would make them better, and more searchable.

Also, making them easier to access - they're right at the bottom of quicklinks, and the far right of the taskbar, so they're out of sight, and therefore out of mind.
 
yes but how is this fixed? cults need to get official, ns should select a few good ones and make them front line in the news and forums, except LM.
 
Unhide the cults so to speak. and make official ones. like LM, Trick Tip Cult, Sticker Cult. Make them a bigger part of the site instead of hiding them away in a section that no one goes to. Thing is they don't get the traffic, kinda like regionals due to it being more then a single click to get to where you want to go. Kinda whats going on with the WTB forum. No one knows it there, change that. Put some people in charge of recruiting for each cult and get them noticed.
 
not easily. and that's not a bad idea, but who is qualified to choose what cults are good? maybe we do some sort of voting thing or something. i dunno. like maybe if you want a cult to live, you have to go to the cult page and vote somehow. maybe have the top 30 or so (random number) live on. just a thought
 
Feature cults on the front page every now and then, give a little snippet of what's going on in side etc etc. It will remind people they exist and get people joining new cults.

I think that could work.
 
Put a In-Cult search? Maybe that would cut down on the clutter in cults like build a jib, wouldn't really get more people using them though. Also make it easier to get in cults, like build a jib for example, I don't think the leader is an active member so to make them better go through and appoint leaders that are active members. < Went back and checked RodeoKid hasn't logged in in the past 30 days chances are a lot longer then that.
 
yeah if a cult dies it means that people stop using it, not NS screwed up somehow.

First off I feel like "Dead cults" would be a sweet band name.

Second... its funny... one thing we added was cult news. Maybe we fucked this up, the but the whole idea was that cults could create news together. Like a group blog.... so you could promote the content you were creating.

It was a total flop... I think like 4 people used it. Its a sweet system if you ask me, but maybe we just didn't exactly hit the mark with it.

One thing we want to add is the ability for cults to have photos and videos... making it more of a media play. I'd like to see cults producing photos / videos / news and then us featuring that content.

Forums are just one part of cults... but the part that people use. I think maybe we just need to take another pass at revamping the system - there's a ton of possibility there.
 
They just don't have the traffic in the first place to have more features then a forum. if we could get more activity in them then the feature might take off. Also maybe if some of the cult leaders knew more about cult features it would probably be used more. I bet you many(at least the few active ones) know about these features. one more thing you say things like Pictures and Videos are great features but some cults really don't apply for those, LM for example, I really don't see a use for Pictures and Video there... then again a cult like build a jib it would be great. The best way to get cults working is probs just wipe the cults that are there and start from a blank slate, yes you would lose alot of good threads but they would be replaced by a new generation. Technology Changes, Ideas Change, so why shouldn't cults. Leadership in the cults should move on too, so many unactive leaders in many of the cults and thats probs what killed them

second i am very surprised with the outcome of this thread. most of my threads die

third i agree with andrew. we need a fresh start and sticky a thread in non ski gabber to get more hype and ask people what they think of starting anew with the cults
 
NO.

definitely not.

i say create a thread in NSG hyping up cults, delete the 60%+ that have very few members/very little content and the begin moderating the creation of cults more closely. also make it easier to get to cults like was mentioned before. it is kind of in an "out of the way" spot currently.
 
I agree that nuking all cults isn't the right way to go... its also not necessary we can for sure do it more carefully.

We could do something like nuke all cults that have zero activity in the last 12 months... then make it a bit harder to create them.

Good ideas flowing here... keep 'em coming. We're going to do an overhaul of the cult system eventually so talking it out would be really helpful.

Pretend that the sky is the limit.

 
I feel like there are more active cults than people know about. Just because only 3 or 4 of your cults are active, doesn't mean there aren't others.

Now the question here is do we make the few existing active cults more prominent to get more people joining them, or do we try and promote the overall use of cults and boost up some of the lesser used ones?

You also have to remember that cults are not only meant as topic specific forums, though they do that quite well, they are meant to me micro communities within the site. Like Doug mentioned, there are also things like cult news, essentially a group blog that people can feed content into. For instance, we'd love to see a cult for every mountain, and allow people to use them not only to see who rides from day to day, but to have people post into cults news feed your own Park Updates, event coverage and edits from your days there. Many of the mountains already have these cults set up, they just don't get much traffic. How else would you like to see these presented so you know they are there?

We feel that these cults offer a huge amount of potential, we just need to know how you want to use them so we can make them work
 
i'm thinking the same thing, a "featured cult" sparks curiousity and lets people know what is out there.

kind of like going around to different college clubs, a recruitment page of sorts, haha

I'm not sure if there's room on the front page, but maybe the community/cult page
 
I feel like promoting the overall use is the better option. Generally when people go to cults with a thread, they're expecting a better, more applicable answer, Ladies Men in particular. If cults become really easy to join, they will become more like NSG, which is something cults try to steer clear from, no?
