no the reasons that vietnam didnt work is for many different reasons

a) soldiers were dieing in a country thousands of miles from home for a group of people who didnt want us there and therefore didnt really care how the war ended (would u have?)

b) our government only considered our actions police work and it wasnt a fully commited military operation

c) and the people of the country all didnt want us there, the majority felt they were better off under communism cause the US backed government wasnt exactly just

im glad that you can see all possible outcomes of an event (i.e. the chain that you spoke of, that eventually blames bush) but if you want to place blame on the admin., place it on the admin. who put us in the middle east to beign w/ (i can tell you that it wasnt W's)

question: if the UN had kept a full military presence in the middle east, and the deaths continued, who would you feel was to blame?

civilian death is a part of war, here are some numbers for you: a little over 145000 died in the uk, the ussr lost 2.5 million, germany lost 300000, and the japanese lost 500000. like i said civilian casualties happen. nobody wants it to happen, but it does. but i argued the point that america and much of society has gotten somewhat soft and look to place the blame on some one, no matter what the situation is.

 
Ok, the reason why it was not a fully committed military operation is because of the lack of support at home and abroad. Johnson never got the troops he needed in the first place to keep a hold on the NVA. Troops were spread far and thin, and forced to hold without any kind of relief. By the time Nixon took over in 1969, the war was technically already over. Part of his election campaign was to put an end to the war in Vietnam. So he immediately began to withdraw troops, putting an even greater strain on remaining forces. This led to the drop in morale of the troops, since support from home was virtually non-existant, and nothing was to be gained by taking any ground since it was to be given up later.

Basically what I'm trying to say by referencing Vietnam is that troops need support from home (not Kerryism bullshit). If they aren't getting the support, then they aren't fighting for their country, meaning they are fighting for nothing. Hopefully this makes sense.

alot of people, would argue that the world is not safer withought Siddam, atleast the way we took him out. In doing so, we jsut created more poeple who dont like us. There has been studies and infact, terrorists dont like us becuase we police the world, not infact becuase we are rich/have shit. plus, his top advisor or whoever is still alive who worked for him is not somewhat in power. (of whatever there is left). it is just like the presidnet. ya you kill the president, but then the vice president just becomes president and mostlikley he has the same ideals as the president. when we attacked iraq, we jsut piss more people off and make more people want to harm the US.

Any of you fools who think George Bush is keeping you safe are surely mistaken. It is seriously almost futile to try to run around killing so-called 'terrorists'. In the Islamic faith, it is considered extremelt honorable to die in Jihad (holy war) for your cause. Not too mention that the sons of these dead 'terrorists' will not forget what the U.S. did to their dear old dads. This little miltary police action in iraq will only cause more terrorism in the future.

And while i'm on the topic, does anyone know what country supports the most terrorism in the world? I'll give you a hint, it's not iraq, iran, syria, pakistan, or afghanistan. Hell it's not even North Korea. It's fucking Saudi Arabia. And guess what ladies and gentlemen, the US has been protecting the saudis for years. Guess who blew up the world trade centers? you guessed it the saudis. And guess who protects the Saudi embassy here in the US. the Secret Service. In fact after 9/11 Bush had Osama's family flown outta the country for their protection. Of course the US would never wanna piss off the saudis right? cause they have the most oil in the world.

My point in brief, don't declare a 'war' (aka military police action - soldiers don't recieve retirement benefits) on terrorism if you aren't going to follow through completely. There are plenty more dangerous countries in the world than iraq ever was.

M1garand: yah the troops got a lot of shit they didnt deserve in vietnam, but its still not the major issue. We started off that war almost right after WW II by thinking that we could defeat ho chi minh's rebels with the help of the french with one hand tied behind our back, but about a decade later the french were kicked out and we stepped (same kind of over confidence we had in iraq), then there was the issue that the US backed leader was so unpopular for his tyranical rule that his own generals with the help of the poulation threw him over (again what we are doing today, is trying to put a leader of our liking in power), and finally no matter how much support the troops then and now receive from our people it doesnt change the fact that they are going to hate the fact that they are fighting and dieing 5,000 miles away from home for a group of people who dont care, you would think that we would not make the same mistake twice but here we are

like I said. it's all about the support of the troops. whether or not you or me think it's right or wrong to be there, there's nothing they need more than support from home. seriously look into some troop donation programs or something for christmas and what not. my best friend is currently in kuwait, and he told me to tell everyone i know to get the troop ribbons for your cars. come on it's the least we can do for the guys that are giving it all.
