Danny Kass arrested for driving his van up a trail!

After being discharged from a weed conviction a couple of weeks ago he goes and does this.... dude can't be the brightest boarder around haha. Hopefully this isn't a repost.

"A high-profile United States snowboarder has been arrested after a crazy stunt that allegedly endangered skiers and boarders at Cardrona Alpine Resort on Monday this week.

Double Winter Olympic medallist Danny Kass, 26, drove his van up a crowded main trail at 9.30am.

Kass, a finalist at Cardrona’s Burton NZ Open last weekend, allegedly got the van jammed in snow on the way up. And that’s when disaster could have struck, according to Wanaka cop Mike Johnston.

“The vehicle ended up getting stuck on an angle and because the snow conditions were soft, if the vehicle [had] rolled over it would be a great big metal missile screaming down on its side or on its roof – down through the middle of the skifield – until it stopped against something solid.

“He’s put a lot [of people] at risk.”

Pro rider Kass is thought not to be entering the Winter Games – halfpipe events are on at Cardrona next week – but “he won’t be back” at the skifield, Cardrona manager Gary Husband says.

Kass initially spoke to Cardrona staff about having his conspicuously-painted van towed to the halfpipe for a promotional photo shoot.

But then “the driver has taken the liberty of thinking that he had permission to [drive] the vehicle all the way through”, Johnston says.

“Now whether he had permission or not is irrespective of him putting members of the public’s safety at risk.”

With chains on his van, Kass allegedly drove up past the carpark, beside the ski patrol hut next to the base building and up past the queue to MacDougall’s quad.

“He’s basically driven up the middle of the main MacDougall ski route. And there’ve been members of the public coming down through that,” Johnston says.

“To have a completely alien-type vehicle in that environment with no warnings at all to anybody causes huge concern.”

Skifield staff contacted police once they saw what was happening, frantically organising a groomer to build a snow barrier to prevent the van from sliding.

Kass was breath-tested but wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Johnston confirms.

He was charged yesterday with endangering the safety of the public and is scheduled to appear in Queenstown District Court on Monday.

Husband won’t comment because it’s now a court matter."

bahahahaha. So epic. I can totally see it. That definitely could have been real bad if it rolled over though. He would have been in for one hell of a ride.

Hoooooly shit, some people are pretty ridiculous hahaha I wonder if he's gonna get the boot after that stunt. Takes some balls to think that's gonna be ok while people are skiing, that is some epic shit. Sick van though...

hahahahahaha, i bet the words, 'it seemed like a good idea at the time', will be coming out of his mouth alot over the next couple days

When you release something like that to the public you can't just say, there wasn't that much of a danger. If the public sees that you don't really care about their safety, then they will not care to visit. They are right though, if it were to flip over there is a chance it could slide and that is a lot of weight, even sliding at 5-10mph, it will do damage. I do not think they over reacted at all. I actually think they handled the situation quite well.

Ski runs are actually steaper than you think. Have you ever walked up trails in summer? If the van was stuck on an angle across the slope it wouldn't take much to tip it. The force of it tipping would probably be enough to make it slide.

It's a pretty fucking dumb/cocky thing to do when there are beginners coming down the slope toward you.

He might be dumb, but hes pretty ballsy trying it hahaha

Well, you are thinking about it like an agile teenager who would be aware of a van in the middle of a slope. However, you aren't thinking of it as a) a parent who would be afraid for their child's safety and thus not want to frequent your resort and b) a small child, who wouldn't necessarily be the most cognizant person sitting in a lunch area or lift loading area at the bottom if the van were slidding down.

So to you, is it an overreaction? It could be. To most, nah, it seems legit.

Really not epic at all. It was a stupid move, and like the cop said, someone could have ended up dead.

Way to go Danny, putting yourself above everyone else, awesome way to promote our sports.

Danny Kass is a dumbass. How many more times is this clown ass going to be arrested before he gets banned from NZ?

if that was symms, or west, or even creighton, then that would probably have gotten an award.

but cause it's kass, screw it. i hate that guy.

"so dangerous""somebody could've gotten killed""i would have called the cops too"
you haters all sound like a bunch of nark, wannabe cop, pussy-ass bitches. you should be ashamed to utter such words of control. and here i thought skiers were cool, so many of you just suck, straight up. nark bitches!

This. Too bad you don't have to pass an idiot test before you can get a driver's license. When high profile people like former US Olympic Medalists do stupid shit like this it screws all of us. The next time you leave the US and someone in another country assumes that you are a dumbass because you're American, blame Danny Kass.

danny is what we all are at times, unregretful, trying to live life to its fullest. and Aaron, look at the posts, teenagers saying they'd call the cops, get him out of New Zealand, etc....that is old parental uptight behavior exhibited by adults and adults only, not jibber skiers trying to have a good time, especially at Snopark, give me a break.
i mean its not like he's michael vick (who i like) or mike tyson. loosen up.

maybe it was blown out of proportion, but....
it was still dangerous, and dangerous to a lot of other people. im sorry, im not changing my tune he should not have driven a VAN up an OPEN RUN full of GAPERS. if he killed some kid you would be the first one casting stones.

The Whiskey Trilogy movies (snowboarding) is the highest selling snowboard set of all time....and those guys made people laugh/entertained just as Jackass did...Danny lives along those same lines. Danny will not ruin the sport. You guys will ruin the sport by growing up to wear Bogner one pieces with fur headbands talking shit in lift lines.
He was driving his van to the halfpipe for a photo shoot. I really can't believe the nerdiness of these responses, you kids are dorks that sound like your parents.

and another thing, danny ruining the sport?he makes millions off of Grenade, literally.he has Olypmic medals.he has X Games medals.he has produced three full snowboard movies.he has a TV show on Fuel.ruining the sport? he is the sport!

someone's taking the internet a little seriously....besides how baked was danny when he thought he could drive that van up a trail? haha.

Aren't you his cousin ??
ps: i totally agree, danny's latest acts are so blown up: yes it was a stupid move to drive a van up the slopes, but come on, if it was let's say 4bi9 driving a van up to the park to take some sick shots and got arrested/fined for it, we'd all be yelling f*** the police! and stuff...just because he slays on one board instead of two ?And the drug bust?come on people, im sure most of you guys toke, including some pro athletes.....

Are you drunk? Or baked as a cake? Or just in love with Danny Kass?
Yes he was driving his van up a run to a pipe shoot, but he was doing it during the time the resort was open. The reason everyone is talking shit about him is that it is just so dumb that we can all see the logic in the resort's decision. It wasn't even funny, just stupid and dangerous. Dangerous stuff is fun and all, but not if it is at the risk of other innocent non-risk-takers' lives. Seems pretty obvious to me that he fucked up.
I don't really like Danny Kass in the first place either.

rofl so random

anyway, kass is an idiot, i mean it would be one thing if it was a closed trail or something, but this was with people on it

how the hell can't you see a van coming at 0.1 mph up a bunny slope? they run sleds and cats around the whole day. i don't care if it makes sense. kevski, don't worry too much, you'll be safe and sound just like your sober, uptight parents.

No, that was a stupid thing for him to do. Even if it was totally safe, he is still being a dick driving his van up where people are skiing and hiking.

if you really don't understand then I feel bad for you. One, making fun of safety and sobriety, wow great. Two, have you ever heard of vehicular manslaughter? And I'm glad you compared the van to a cat that has TRACKS on it. As a big brother who takes his little sister skiing yes, there are small children and learners who would not be able to get out of the way.

And you simply can't argue around any of that.

what´s up with the whole "let stay teenagers" attitude? You must have really hated your parents, since your so scared of yourself/others "turning" into their parents.

Basically Kass is a retard, especially for thinking the resort would react any differently than they did. I can see the funness in what he did, but then again stupid people, doing stupid things are pretty funny!

Stay young, and "un-parenty-like"!

agreed...that scumbag from Jersey knows what's up by being himself. snowboardings gettign too soft anyways.

How are these similar to a fucking van?

Cat: has treads for far better grip, warning beeps, a nd flashing lights, you also sign a form stating that you understand vehicles like a sled or cat will be driving up the hill. The cat driver also knows how to drive the cat with the public around.

Sled: Also has treads, much smaller, more maneuverable, expected to be traveling, ability to stop much faster.

Sleds and Cats are not comparable to a van. Danny was a stupid ass about it.

not really, ba barracus is a bad ass van driver

jumping over box ramps as the warehouse explodes behind him? no one rocks a van harder than ba.

"In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court

for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a

maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today,

still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune.

If you have a problem - if no one else can help - and if you can find

them - maybe you can hire: The A-Team. badabadabadababadabada ba ba buh ba buh ba bahhhhhhhhhhh....."

the real danger, besides gaper lightningbolting into his van, was that it could tipover. if it would fall on a sidepanel or its roof it'd have flown down like a cannonball.....

Well cats and sleds have treads like mentioned before, meaning they have control. They also have warning sirens going the whole time. And they aren't top heavy enough to potentially tip over on a mellow run. Completely different than a van like that with nothing but chains on. In soft snow chains won't do as much at all.
And seriously what is all this parents and up-tight bullshit? You brought it up in pretty much every post and seem to expect us to accept it as justification for Danny acting like a retard. If he is your cousin then it all makes sense though...

Dude, I used to have some respect for you, but this thread has erased that.

Maybe you haven't put down your bong long enough to notice, but mountain maintenance and grooming vehicles are intentionally painted bright colors. They have flashing lights and sirens. Why, because people have skied into them and died. To drive a mostly white van, up a ski run while people are skiing is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. He put a lot of people's lives in danger. Kiwis are generally pretty laid back; if Kass did this in the US, I'm sure he would be looking at jail time.

It doesn't matter how fucking fast he was going. The last thing a skier or boarder expects to encounter when they come over a knoll is a big van. Even a decent rider could have hit him. Maybe you'd be stoked to end up as Danny Kass's hood ornament.

Also, about surface area. If the snow was packed enough to keep his tires from sinking in too far, then it was more than packed enough to support the weight of the van on its side or roof. That means that, if the van tipped over, it probably would have slid until it hit something solid enough to stop it or it ran out of hill.

If recognizing that intentionally doing something that can result in other people dying makes me a "sober, uptight, parent"; I can live with that.

End rant. You can go back to pulling tubes now.
