Damn car...

So yesterday I went to my friend's house. She lives on a big hill, surrounded by trees. I had the car in second gear, with the E brake up, and went inside and was laying out by the pool with a few people when we heard a really weird noise. No one wanted to get up so we just left it alone...

Like an hour later someone else showed up and wanted to know what retard parked their car in the trees. So we all go running out to the driveway...and I have no idea how it actually happened becuase it was in second gear with the E brake up...but my car rolled into the woods!

It missed a big tree by about two inches on the one side, and then went farther down and ended up sandwiched between two trees with about an inch and a half on either side on the car. We had to call AAA to get it out...but there wasn't even a scratch = ]

ebrake needs adjustment. leaving a car in gear doesnt mean its solid either. it doesnt take much to knock it out of gear.
happened to my friends project truck once. the starter shorted out and the truck started moving, trying to jump itself to start. ended up running into a wendy's window.

Ahh a wendy's window? What a crazy surprise for the people working. one minute they're making a burger and the next theres a truck inside the building.

Same thing happened to my friend at the same house, except it was homecoming day and while we were getting ready her car rolled into a tree. Totaled it

eh, all the gears are pretty much the same. it really just depends on how your gates are configured

I know I'm right. The lower the gear the harder it is to move. So either 1st or Reverse. Your logic doesn't even make sense, harder in 5th (highest gear) or reverse (lowest gear)

eh, you both are kind of right., theres too many variable and it depends on what kind of car/tranny you have in the first place.
5th and Reverse generally have the hardest gates to clear - for safety reasons.
your reasoning of "lower gears are harder to move" isnt a very good case. the gears all have the same tooth distance, its just the diameter of the gear that changes - or if you have serious gear lash issues.

park a car on a hill. put it in first and let off the brake - see how far it rolls back
park the same car on the same hill and put it in fifth - it should move the same distance

Hahaha, a friend of mine had the same problem, but her car was parked at a level of about 3 or 400 meters up the mountain. her car roled down the hill, untill crashing agianst the only tree in the field. If this tree would not have been there, the car would have been shooting down the whole mountain and possibly crashing into some houses at the bottom.

true. if youre trying to pop start it. her car didnt turn over though. or even try to turn over as far as we know. it just popped out of gear and the ebrake didnt hold.

you both are right. theres a happy median when pop starting. you need it low enough to create decent compression but high enough to keep the engine from stalling.

guess i shouldve said - it depends on the speed at which the car is traveling before you pop it. 1st isnt going to work if youre going 40mph haha.

Pull your e brake like you got a pair and maybe it'll stay where you park it next time.

even if it's out of adjustment it has to be really bad to not work at all. My bet is you caould have pulled it harder.

Carry a brick in your car and shove it under a tire???

can someone explain pop starting? and why would you use it...

regardless, i'm getting myself a cinderblock to keep in my trunk. Won't have the car for more than a few weeks though, im getting a subaru so i dont die in the snow next year

yea subaru! i just bought one.
pop starting is basically forcing the car to start. get the car rolling, jam it in gear while cranking the key. basically.
used for when your started dies and shit.

pop starting is what you do to start any manual shifting vehicle if you are having starter trouble. You put in in nuetral and start the beast rolling pretty fast, then put it in gear and drop the clutch, thus starting the engine by force.

works on cars motorcycles or dirtbikes stuff like that. I don't think you can accomplish it in any way with automatics or diesels.

do ya need to crank the key boss?? As long as your key on you should be golden.

Thank god for this method, because I don't think my bike would have started this year without a trip to the shop. F that I popped that thing like 5 times before it fired up.

true, my auxiliary shit was acting up so i just cranked it. this was on my old beat ass car. the "on" position didnt work haha.

I love the situations you can get into with beat ass old cars, they are so much fun. "Just hold the key while I hit this and you spray that in there while those guys give it a push"

Still better than some of the new shit they are coming out with.

Ya a block isn't a bad idea, I always turn my tires into the curb when parking on a hill. Just don't forget that block before you back out ;)

Leave the key off, and roll it and pop the clutch in first, and then in fifth, it will roll further in fifth.

good point I'll remember that next time I'm trying to pop start in reverse up hill. Good job on the clutchless shifting though, that is kinda tough. I've found if you take the rpm's a little higher than you should you can pop it in to each gear easier as the rpms drift down and you don't have to get it as exact. I've done this in the 88 honda accord and my 250 ninja last year when my clutch cable snapped. Also it helps to play traffic to your advantage, if you see a red light coming up slow down way early and wait for the green so you don't even have to stop or change gears too much. The people behind you get mighty pissed but who cares about them.

We should start an ask a car guy cult or something. Anybody ever catch that new england radio show where they just talk about cars and diagnose problems for callers??

damn haha i wish i could post mine but i got into alittle accident the other day and had to have the car towed to the body shop to fix it haha, so im without a car for a few weeks and also without money for expencies :(. i got a ru, 98 white outback!

body shop???? What did you hit?? You can get a new door at a junk yard for like 30 bucks. That suby I posted was my brother's, it's been tossed off the road more than a few times for sure. Looks close and you'll see about two dozen dents and multiple body colors, screw body shops man just buy some spray paint.

no haha i dont care about dents whatsoever, i need a new wheel, axel, and some other part that starts with a s...struts? cant remember what it was, but rear wheel drivers side doesnt move anymore soooo, lotta damage to pay for with that.

ahhh no pictures online of mine, but it's very similar to this car, with a big Smith Optics sticker on the rear window, and a big fucking dent in the driver door from my friend's aunt backing into it while it was parked in their driveway.

96 Impreza Brighton Coupe. 2dr, 5 speed, AWD.

I just drove it up an abandoned ski resort earlier today. It's baller. Getting old though; I'll probably buy an 01'ish 2.5RS in another year or two.

Nice ride bangor, mine's a 96 as well. It's just an outback, but after the wreck he needed new parts and snagged some off of an outback sport. It's got a short shifter and some damn throaty exhaust due to an oversized pipe underneath and a hand built muffler.

My buddy also backed into my driver side door while parked in a driveway. So now it has a black driver side door, the roof's blue(original color), and the outback sport parts are green, the rest is sprayed a pretty close green match.

I can't wait to throw some winter tires on that thing and get it out in the snow this season.
