Daily Throwdown 13/14

Sorry for the double post, but there was hard rain for about 3 hours here in Wisconsin. Fuckin dumb, and now it's snowing so it's going to be all ice tomorrow. Banking for a day off of school, but even if they do cancel, the hill will be super shitty.

My school was the only school called off early today. Nobody at my school skis, so I drove out to this rail and hit it solo. Got this pic by propping my phone up in a tree. Hiking it was a bitch because the rail is about 90 feet and the drop in is another 30 or so. No idea how, but I nearly greased it on my first hit! It's such a fun rail, a little scary how fast you get going though...

A lot different from a regular rail. You slow down significantly when you're sliding, and obviously you want to do everything in your control to not catch an edge because it's a quick painful death if you do. They're fun to slide though, and they make a cool noise. Plus I find them easy to grip for rail tricks

Hoping to go tomorrow morning. As much as I like powder, it's tough to enjoy it on Minnesota's tiny runs. Going to wait till tomorrow when the park is hopefully groomed and ready to go.

Go find some backcountry lines! Skiing down sketchy hills after a big pow dump is more fun than it sounds.

I think that was your ski i found yesterday. Hope all ended up not too bad. I was bummed you crashed, your run was looking good.

Got a great jump to try stuff on at giants ridge. Just dropped my shoulder hard on a 3 to see what would happen and stomped a textbook cork 5 first try and wouldn't shut up about it for an hour. Then went for the 7, got bucked 3 times before taking to my feet, it was only like 50°-60° off axis but I counted it because it came back on axis at 7. Stoked!

For those who haven't been to Spirit this year, you should get there. I've been to Hyland, Afton, Powder Ridge, and Spirit this year, and to me Spirit is by far the best. I am very impressed with everything in their park. Long rails, four big jumps. I hadn't been there for a few weeks and when I was there Saturday I thought all 4 of the jumps in the big line (including showtime) were bigger now. I had a blast for about three runs on those jumps until I took the third way too big on a rodeo and dislocated my hip. If my days of launching backies on park jumps are over, at least I went out going huge! Enjoy the rest of the ski season everyone, go big, do backflips.

Well, I ski at coffee mill, and let me tell you, it is a park skier's nightmare.

There are 3 rails and 1 barrel. 2 of the rails are flat and the other is a flat down, but they are all square and rusted. The other day the flat down rail fell over when someone hit it, and there are literally no boxes.

There are 5 jumps scattered across the terrain park. The first one is just a small bump, the 2nd one is more of a ramp, the third one is completely ruined and the 4th one doesn't have a landing. The 5th one is decent and it has a really nice landing, but it's small. The park has nice flow though, I'll say that much.

If you're a park skier, don't go here! It sucks! I think I'm gonna take a trip to somewhere bigger here soon. Where should I go? Afton is about 2 hours away, and Spirit and Granite are probably around 4 hours away. Is a 1-day trip worth the ride to Spirit or granite or should i just go to Afton?

Afton. I was just there on Saturday and I also went about a month ago and it's been my best two days all season. So much fun, and I've been to Granite, Tyrol, Hyland, Welch this year and it's my favorite.

>has been to granite

>has been to afton

>says afton is better

I'm getting a little pissed because hyland gets so icy sometimes and the snow is really hard too. My tail edges had been falling off- no big deal just get a good amount of 3500psi epoxy on it and let it dry for 4-5 days right? -WRONG.... epoxy just cracked open after 2 runs and the edge just got worse. Anyone else had this problem or know a better solution?

Landed on my head when i tried a backflip into the airbag. Landed a frontlfip perfectly. Then landed a cork 7 perfectly but face planted after my skis stuck. fuuuuk

Snow was so hard this weekend because of the cold that I'm pretty sure the entire sole of my foot is bruised. It's March but feels like January, I love Minnesota but the weather is a pain in the ass sometimes.

Whatsup guys there's a good chance i might be going to UMN twin cities next year for college.

Just wondering what the ski scene is like. Obviously I'm not going here for the skiing but i gotta get my fix in. So if anyone goes to UMN or lives in twin cities what are the closest/ best resorts, is it easy to get rides, is there a good amount of fellow skiers, etc. thanks.

There's like 4 or 5 hills within 45 minutes of the U. There aremore and more skiers around every year it seems like and sshouldn't be too hard to figure out rides.

Now that i'm off my phone ill go more in depth.

As far as the best areas, my personal opinion is Afton and Troll. Although I haven't been in the twin cities area very much in the last 4 years because of school, so those are really the only two areas i've ridden. But I feel like that is kind of the general consensus? They both have tow ropes, aftons jumps are money for the most part and they are owned by Vail so it's just going to get better. The way troll sets up their rails rivals any park in the world I think. It's always fresh there, a lot of resets and always super creative along with some large features.

Oh and troll has a $99 season pass for college students, so i'd jump on that. It can easily pay for itself before any other hill opens.

Wow, looks like there's some pretty good stuff closeby. I'd definitely try to get out there a couple times a week for sure. Stoked to be heading out to the U, and hopefully I'll see you guys on the slopes next year.

thanks for the quick and detailed responses. +k to you both.

Welcome to Minnesota!

And all that Hugo said about Troll's setup is spot on. I need to get out there more often, I even have the hookup for free tickets. But I have the misfortune of living in south minneapolis which is great for having a hill 10 minutes away (hyland) but it's whack compared to troll... well, actually the bigger jumps aren't that bad at hyland.

If you ever go to hyland know this- Icy unless it's in the morning, it's amazing for the first few hours after open. weekday nights are super crowded except for wednesdays, sometimes mondays, rarely fridays. don't come on a weekend. If the temperature is below 0 it will most likely be desolate.

If you have a full day off and can spend a little gas money, take a day trip up to Spirit Mountain in Duluth. It's amazing. That's all I have to say. Otherwise Afton and Troll are great, never go to Welch Village, you will die from disappointment.

Sincerely,

Hit elbow at hyland, it was so sticky that i was on it for about 10 seconds. Tried to manual into a rail and ate shit. Had a boring hour of laps but at least I got to see my friend learn cork 7s on a jump with an icy landing, they were on the sickest axis I've ever seen.

Gave myself my first ever concusion today while trying my first backy. Super pissed cause i set it really well, saw the landing coming around, and the next thing I remember is lying on the ground in a daze. My iq was pretty low for the next couple minutes - i was trying to latch my skis together while one was upside down, and i couldnt unlock my phone. Threw up a bunch too.

Even got it on video. Doensn't look bad at all but the jump was a pretty significant step down and I got my bell rung pretty hard.

Today:

Got my safety grab on big jumps down.Improved my rail game.

Did a 360.

Also did a mute grab once.

Im going to mt lacrosse tomorrow

Hyland's ropes kept overheating, and the addition of wall box makes for some hardcore collisions. I decided to hit it last run and got trucked by a boarder just before the lip haha

Really stepped up my rail game this weekend at Afton, got front up pretz kfed, blind up front 4, front up pretz 4, and blind up continuing kfed! Also tried 360 switchups on a dfd and died pretty hard but oh well...
