We just had ours in October of last year. After I read to him at bedtime I make sure to include a short ski edit to subliminally train him :) Good luck on your expectant child, its a wild ride!

How to grow a park rat 101

I have a 12 year old boy and a 6 year old girl. I myself only started skiing like 5 years ago, but I am excused – I am older than Tanner Hall after all, when I was a kid twin tips didn't even exist :)

Both me and the boy got into free skiing like 2 years ago. He is progressing way faster than me though haha. But the little girl is the real talent. She has so much steeze, rips the mountain, people around us are in shock. Pops like crazy on the jumps and I am pretty certain the first 180s will come very very soon.

Son will be 2 in the spring, i want to get him on the hill next season!

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated, i know rule #1 is dont push them or you're going to have a bad time.

Don't be boring. You probably hate skiing pizza on the greens, don't expect them to like it :) Trees, moguls, jumps, powder - the things you like is what they will probably enjoy as well.

Been on NS since 2002. I have two kids and the third is due on Feb 22. I haven't skied in three years, and I don't anticipate being able to get back into it for at least a couple more for reasons I won't get into. Right now, I just try to focus on taking care of my family and ensuring my kids love the outdoors as much as possible.

Regardless of not being able to ski or raise my kids skiing right now, fatherhood has totally replaced that in a way that is so completely fulfilling that although I'd love to be able to ski, I don't miss it. It's easily one of the best things you can do with your life.

damn dude. I just moved to a ski brat neighborhood. I don't know what I'd do without skiing in my own life. Or with more than 1 kid! We are one and done. But the neighborhood has tons of kids super close to us.

logging in to claim my dad status- 2 boys, age 4 and 2. would have loved to get them started this year but had a hip replacement in september and am probably just going to take the season off to baby it in recovery. hopefully next year i can get them both going to some extent.

Been on here since 03 and still check it out frequently. Now have a 3.5 year old daughter that we started on skis at 20 months. She's just starting to get the hang of it now and the days on the hill with her are frustrating, boring, and amazing all in one. Lots of time spent eating snow, walking around, snacking, and some "skiing" here and there. Big time investment that's already paid off in time spent together. Have to include a bail photo.

Yo! I think I remember you. Did I talk to you when you were on the lift and I was hiking the wallride in the streets setup?

Congrats on the 4 kids!! Even better that they are becoming park rats!?

I'm 38, dad of 4, still on NS daily! Mike, I watched you film some heavy hits at 7 Springs back in maybe '11 when I lived in Pittsburgh. Last week I had a proud dad moment when the lift lines at Snoqualmie were long and the kids decided to hike the park for a couple of hours. I'm raising park rats!

I hope everyone is enjoying the slopes with their kids! I've been fortunate to get out a few times lately with kids and some solo days. Here is the second episode of season 4 of a mini webisode series I do with the kids called Laps With Dad! If you have time, check it out!

Ahhh you beat me to the name. I wanted to do a series called “Dad laps”, but it was more of a pipe dream. Especially considering his age.

on that note, under 2 still and he’s doing chair laps

One month out in China, and I come back to a confident skier. Major props to his grandparents

What are you using for equipment and a helmet for that little one?

Our little girl is so small I dont think we can find equipment for her yet. But she’s got all the balance skills to make it happen @19 mo.

Little guy is on some 66cm Head Joys, Nordic Team1 Firearrow boots, and a Poc Spin helmet. I think he has a size 6 footie
