Cutting poles

Does anyone have any experience with cutting poles to shorten them up? How did you get the grip off? No wrong answers, thanks.

cut them below the grips and put bike grips on instead. pole straps are overrated.

or put them in a vice and use channel locks to twist the grips off. cannot guarantee you wont crush your pole (ouch) using this method.

I was really considering going the bike grip path, I'll look around for some that would fit, thanks!

You need to heat them with either a heat gun or a pot of hot water to get them off.

shit i forgot about this. it really does work, just heat a big pot of water and leave the pole grips in there for 10-15 minutes and they will come off easily.

i used to be in your situation. what works the best is if you get a hot bucket of water( as hot as it will come out of your tap) and let the grips sit in there for 2 to 3 minutes. youll see a white substance start to disperse through the water. that is the glue warming up and coming off. after about 3 minutes, youll be able to slide the grips off fairly easily. and when youre putting the grips back on they usually dont need glue unless its a loose fit. ive used mine for a while without gluing them back on and have had no issues.

Word, Thanks! +k to all who contributed

Here's how I did bike grips. I have skinny composite poles. So I put some rather papery, porous tape around the pole, saturated it with epoxy, then put the grip over that. Tape it at such a diameter that it's a tight fit, and the resin will ensure it stays on.

Boil some water and hold the grips in there for about a minute should slide off easily, but make sure there isn't a screw holding your grips on. Use a hack saw to cut them, putting the grips on might be hard so you might have to heat them up again to get them on all the way. Good Luck

Getting grips off: Heat gun, sister's hairdryer, pot of boiling water, vice, Black & Dekker Workmate, etc...

Chopping off excess pole length: pipe cutter (clean and perfectly straight), hacksaw, angle grinder, mitre saw, plasma cutter, lathe, etc...

It's not hard.
