Customising/Painting skis

OK - has anyone out there successfully painted there skis - customised them, painted there own graphics. I'm a designer and was interested in doing my own top sheets. Does anyone have a clue what sort of paints to use, and how to prep the skis.

Any advice would be sweet.

Yeah, I wanna know too so I can paint my topsheets so that all the punks think I'm riding some type of Armada prototype!

i havent ever done my own skis but i have done bikes. All you need to find out is what kind of primer will stick to the ski. After that you're golden. I use auto primer on my bike stuff then do my work and through on 3 coats of clear coat. Im guessing with skis you are going to want a super thick clear coat though because otherwise every time you cross your skis they are going to lose paint. I know this probably didnt help much but whatever. Your best bet would be to find a company that can relamenate the top clear sheet onto your skis. That way you could strip it down, do your graphic stuff then get a new top sheet pressed on, that would be super professional looking but will probably cost

 
I think if you found the right primer then you could do that alistair. The more clearcoat the better... It would only make the ski stronger!

I have never painted my skis before, but I would suggest using R/C (remote contolled) car body paint. They make this flexible paint so when the Lexan (thin plastic)bodies bend and flex the paint doesn't crack and chip. I believe the company that makes it is Pactra. I know it comes in small spray paint cans, and I think you can get it in small bottles too. If you go to a hobby store that sells R/C cars they should be able to help you out. Like I said I've never painted my skis, but I have considered it, and that is what I was gonna try. Other than that stuff I think most paint will crack and chip. You may consider artist inks as well, if you put them on real thin it may work, but i think the flexible paint would be your best bet.

You could also pick up an really crappy pair of old skis and try a whole bunch of things on them and see what works best. Put the ski through hell aferwards because if you are jumping thats basically whats going to happen to them. The RC paint sounds like a good idea though.

 
i haevn't painted my skis but i do reapply clear coat to them. The one that i use is a clear coat that they use on outdoor like mailboxes and stuff that sees winter weather. Actually i just finished this summer filling in the top sheet slices off of my blue ten eighty's. I used a permant jiffy to get teh stuff blue agian and then used some opoxy to harden onto the jiffy . I then used two can's of this clear coat polymer onto teh skis and there shiny and look just like new. Hope they hold up for another season.

yeah, we've painted a bunch of old skis...mainly you just need to make sure that they're clean before you put the paint on and make sure you don't get any on the edges or in the bindings...you can put masking tape on the edges.

Also put on several coats of finish or else it scrapes off really easy. Have fun!

 
I've painted a couple pairs of skis... i find that clear coat works ok, but it still chips pretty easy with your edges and all...the best results i've gotten is with sanding the top, cleaning it, aplying what ever paint your going to, and then throwing on a bunch of think coats of fiberglass resin like bondo, and then sand it some more ...you don't want alot on there. it works about as good as it can without getting them relaminated. your skis might be a little stiffer after depending on how much resin you put on, but i'd put money on the fact that you wouldn't know unless you made them yourself.

 
i'm actually not painting a pair of skis this year...at least not yet, but i got a ton of old Garbage Pale Kids cards... that i'm going to stick over every square inch of my enemies and then throw over a few coats of resin....

Yeah, I have a friend who just painted his Pocket Rockets pitch black. All he did was sand down the top, clean it paint it, then put a shit load of clear coat on 'em. They're fucking dope. I've been planning to airbrush my darksides this year, too.

 
i used to paint up my skis with paint markers...it may take a long time, but you cando some pretty dope stuff...lokash did this also

That idea seems pretty sweet. I think that I'm going to wait a while (until my skis are a little older) before i try anything like that. I bet airbrushing would be the best way to do it. Just like the custom graphics you see on motorcycles.

Roughly, how much would it cost? I would think that it would be expensive. Wouldnt it be better to put that $$ to a better set of skis or other equipment?

sand the top sheet before you do it...this will cause the paint to stick better to the top of your ski

have u eva seen a brother play mandalay?
 
How far do we sand it down, Like to the core, or just a couple of millimeters off teh top sheet. ??

And what about the primer? What kind do we use?

Truk, don't sand right down to the core. All you want to do is scratch up the surface a little so that the paint will stick better.

Yes, that should be all you need to to. Paint doesnt stick as well to a smooth surface. Just roughen it up a bit with sand paper and get painting :)
