Custom Made Footbeds

Hey people.

I tried using the search button without major success. I currently ride a pair of Fischer Fuse 9 (vacuum) and i plan on taking them with me all over the mountain for the next 6 months. They fit snug and nicely and they threat my feet well (never had pain issues in them). My local dealer, however, still strongly suggested getting custom footbeds made. Is this really worth it or does the man just want my money :)?

Also, i really believe they are better at making the custom footbeds in Val D'isere than they are in my flat country without any skiing possibilities...

Thanks in advantage!

Custom footbeds are in my opinion the most important part of getting a boot right. I strongly believe you can not fit a boot well with footbeds as there is no way to garentee what the foot is doing inside the boot without them. To be honest I'm amazed any one fitted you in a Fischer vacume boot without them. Custom boots like that need your foot to be in a solid neutral position to be able to correctly shape the shape aroun the foot.

As to where you get them I would look firstly at the brands they offer. Sidas are the best in my opinion as they offer the boot fitte the most control. So see if your shop sells sidas firstly.

This. Without a footbed, you literally molded your boot with your foot sitting in an incorrect position and it will keep it that way. I see you are from Denmark, so I am not surprised with you saying you got a Fischer Vacuum boot without a footbed. So many shops in Europe think Vacuum by itself is perfect which is about as far from reality as you can get. I know your fitter told you to get them, but a good fitter wouldn't even do the process until you got footbeds.

Once you get footbeds (which is 100% the way to go, otherwise it is a waste of a custom boot) you will need to have the Vacuum process done again so it molds around your proper foot/ankle/leg position. You will be far more comfortable, efficient, and have more control over your skis.

Just to correct my error you can not fit boots well *without* footbeds.

As onenerdykid says though for your boot as footbed is pretty vital.

Thanks guys, i feared this answer really :) The thing is i got them really cheap at our sister company that's kind of a do-everything-company (also where i got elan 82 xti with bindings for 150 $). They just upgraded to the fischer vacuum + salomon custom shell machines last season, and they do not yet have the ability to make custom soles. The more ski-focus store (and much much much more expensive) can make the footbeds, but they only have the salomon custom shell machine. So either i buy the footbeds, and then afterwards go to our sister-company and get them heated.

The thing is that i will be ski bumming in Val D'isere for a full season beginning in just 14 days or so. My belief is that the guys/shops down there has so much more expertise than the people in my own country. So just wait really and get stuff fixed when i hit destination? At destination i'll also try and find some proper clothes plus my pow ski.

Correction.... "So either i buy the footbeds, and then afterwards go to our sister-company and get them heated"...... What i meant was that i would have to get the two things done seperately at two different stores.

val d'isere will have a few shops that can make customs, Surefoot is one to look out for, its right in the middle of town.

Thanks, great to know. Do they by any chance have the vacuum machine aswell? I believe it's common for most Fischer dealers nowadays? And what is the price like (no exact price needed, just a qualified guess :d)?

I wouldn't go to Surefoot as I don't think they actually do fully custom footbeds. Rather what they do is they scan your foot and then they select a shape or profile of footbed from a group of premade shapes that supposedly would fit your foot best. It's not really ideal and you don't get the true custom made fit you would get from a custom Sidas footbed that has been done by a good boot fitter. I've heard a lot of mixed opinions of Surefoot as well.

If the guys at the dedicated ski shop are good and they seem to know what they are doing then I would just get them to make you a footbed. Actually molding and shaping the footbed is very important and so it's best that this is done by someone with proper training or who has done a lot of footbeds.

If they are just outrageously expensive then I am sure you will be able to find someone good in Val D'isere who will be able to make you a Sidas footbed for a reasonable price. Just to add in the footbeds should last you at least two pairs of boots potentially even three pairs so it's worth the investment and getting it done right.

I did pay their website a visit and i did think "meeeh" when i saw that they made their very own boots. The fact i never heard about them made me have second thoughts, but i still appreciate someone mentioning them as a possibility. What is a reasonable price? I think my local dealer has the Sidas ones and charges around 80-100 bucks.

I totally forgot, but i was really curious about how durable they were. So thanks thanks thanks for answering a question i forgot to ask !! :)

Yeah I personally would not recomend surefoot. As sia above they don't offer fully custom footbeds. Superfeet korks offer a similar fully custom option but both are let down by only surporting the mid tarsal joint in the rear foot and not the whole medial arch like a sidas will. There is one fairly decent shop in val I knew a few guys who had worked there an they offer sidas I thought it was called precision but I can't find it online. It may have changed names but I'm sure you can find a good shop in val

Yeah a lot of what surefoot does is smoke and mirrors stuff. They have all this tech that they throw at customers so the customers think they are getting this crazy custom product but infact they are not offering anything a decent ski shop could do and in many cases a good shop could offer much better true custom product. It's just another example why you have to look past how company's market themselves and look at what they actually offer rather then what they claim to offer.

I worked for precision last year and I can say straight up that unless your buying boots from them the bootfitters will offer you absolutely no help at all go check out skimium or killy sport or pitte sport those guys know what's up I went to them for all of my boot work
