Heading up this weekend for the first time, how is the park? And how is the rest of the mountain?
Thanks, Thecoggster

as of riight now, (well this past weekend) Crystal's park is in pretty decent shape as far as rails/boxes go. They have a "rail garden" under the Crystal Clipper on Basin Street with two different lines. One side has a A-frame box, elevated 20' flat rail, Rainbow Box and Barrel Bonk. Other side: C-box, followed by a flat box, 20' down rail, and a DFD. Jump line is consisted of 3 jumps (1st being the smallest, last being the "biggest"). And the small "giggles" park has an urban feature small box and rail, ride-on small box and rail followed by an uphill "dance floor".

^ not sure but they are pretttty bad..its not like its even hard to build a decent jump especially with all the snow theyve been getting, i dont get it?

yea the set-up isn't as 'amazing" as it sounds, i do agree the jumps pretty much suck....but i wont say its not fun, I just wish they didn't have the DFD at the end of basin (being the biggest feature on basin, its near impossible to get speed for without skipping other features.) And the "t-box" setup is kinda sketch

dont know what the hell ur talking about. Same exact every year, go to cannonsburg. I have been going to crystal my whole life and the only new thing is the butter box. they have some olf trap rail, rainbow, and flat bar rail laying around but theyre in shitty shape and i guess not put up. Plus all of those rails were set up like shit, the t box was on a slant and the lip was about 3 feet from the box. They need to step it up

and yes there worse than alpines. At least alpines have good air. These take off's blow. The short boxes here are sticky also. Alpine at least has some decent rails. I was there for MLK weekend and the t box was broken wonder if they fixed it. sorry bout the double post

yea i guess going to crystal my whole life without any outside experiences has lessened my standards greatly. But with the support Crystal's park gets (which seems like very little from the people at the "top," they need to figure out where the sports going soon), it could be worse. I fully agree the jumps suck...and the t-box setup is complete sketch as of now, but its all i can afford. Cannonsburg does sound pretty dope right now though.

yeah they reallly need to step it up..i understand on the rails and what not cause they might not get much funding but they could at least put a little effort into the jumps and the setups for the rails

crystals pretty much the only place ive skied at too but i hit up cannonsburg last night and it was insane. i feel like soo many more people go there now i just wish crystal would do the same..

there really is no excuse for why the things they DO have are built shittily. everybody who skis crystal at all, let them know their lacking. they (park crew, upper management, etc.) simply don't understand how much better it could be with so little changes....oh well

plus i am still bitter because i wasn't hired to the park crew this year ...

stupid crystal mountain

park is not set to be reworked for a whiiiile,

i know i sound like a broken record player, but cburg park is pretty smooth right now. good lofty 3 jump line and 28 rails/boxes set. were building a couple more this next week that should be pretty damn sweet. i only hype cause itd be sweet to see a few more park skiers in the area, come shred and say hi

I'm a season pass holder and i sent them an email saying how their park blows and they need to fix it. i basically told them that ppl want to go to cannons and bsweet so much more now casue the aprks are better. and the total lack of effort sucks... you should email them too

Well, they replied with some corporate BS. here is the reply i got

Hi Paul, Your recent email was passed on to me. I’m sorry the features in our terrain parks are not to your liking. Please rest assured that Crystal invests considerable time and money in an attempt to provide features that a wide range of ages and abilities can use.Requests range from parents who want smaller jumps for their smaller children, to advanced users who want bigger and bigger jumps(which we won’t do because of the number of catastrophic injuries recorded nationally, due to mislanding big jumps). We simply do not have enough available space to give everyone all that they want, including that part of our clientele who object to having any[/u] space taken by terrain parks. In direct response to your comments and of those on the forum that you reference I would first ask if you have spoken w/ Will Johnston, the terrain park manager, or members of his crew, regarding specifically what you think should be changed or improved? One of them is almost always on the hill and are open to constructive comments.I’m sorry but terms like the jumps “suck” and they’re “sketch” and my favorite from Marty “shitty jumps are a whole new level of shittyness” , really don’t give much information as to specifically what someone thinks is wrong and how the features could be better. If you would like to respond to this email with specific constructive suggestions, I will pass on the information to Will. Sincerely, Michael

I was just there tonite,,they re-shaped the park a little bit, reset features and rebuilt the jumps to make them a lil more poppy again, 2nd and the last kicker wernt terrible (correct me if im wrong). The t box is set up kinda similar to what it was last year (still on basin though, and they switched the downrail and t box, easier line if you ask me.) and the DFD is setup differently and a lot easier to get speed for. Overall I didn't mind it. (but we'll see how long this lasts with the busy weekend ahead and kids riding over lips all fucking day).

^ yea I agree the "rail garden" or whatever was actually pretty fun, the setups were pretty clean not much I'd change about it..the jumps were still pretty flat though and the landing for the third (when it fanilly opened) was pretty flat. They don't need to make the jumps any longer they just need to make them more poppy with steeper landings. If they were to make the jumps true tables instead of step-downs which would let them make poppy jumps with steep and long landings which would actually still be relative safe

I don't know if they're "allowed" to make tabletop jumps anymore or not, could be wrong but i think years back when crystal still had tables someone either got seriously injured or died on one. and to avoid any further lawsuits/injuries i (don't think) they can anymore. Once again getting shafted by safety concerns.

I feel like the chances of hurting yourself are so much lower when its well built jump with a steep landing. not a shitty jump with no lip and a landing thats flatter than the run up to the jump

hahaha how the hell did my comment get to be seen by michael call, or cutler, or whichever one it is. did somebody link this regional forum up to them?

anyways LOL, (i'm marty) thats wierd

Yeah no offense but you just made us seem like a whole bunch of idiots with no brains at all.
And Lazy i prolly saw you i was the kid with the black and white coat and 2009 k2 disorderlys that ate it hard on the rails towards the end of the night, and couldnt for the love of god throw my first 5 on the 2nd kicker (shin bang made me only try twice)
And i have to say that the rail set up was not that bad. and the 1st two jumps werent horrible either bu the 3rd was really bad, also the giggles terrain park is a joke.
I spent way more time in the woods and pow than in the park due to how good the conditions were.

its not even close to cannonsburg but the rails arent bad at all...only suggestion i have is to move the c box higher up or more towards the center, right now it kinda sends you off and puts you in bad position for the rail. not a major issue, itd just make it all flow better

um no.....that wasnt me. dont make assumptions on who i am, ecspecially when it says i ride Armadas on my profile,,,not disorderlys. And I wasnt trying to make the park sound "amazing" at all, jus describing what was setup. sorry you didnt like it nor do we really.

haha oh shiit,,,my bad i read the post wrong. ill stay off NS after drinking. sorry again. and yes i did see you

That is funny. And I'm not sure why they would not hire you to park staff, seeing as you have been skiing at crystal forever and know what you're doing.

Anyways, I tried over the summer with a couple of you guys to get improvements for crystal's park. I must say that they have improved the rail section. The Basin street park is pretty legit this year and a ton of fun.

The jumps however, are just terrible (last time I went anyways). They have thin flat lips that have no pop, and they have flat landings. Steep landings and better lips would make the jumps safer, not more dangerous.

I say we continue to talk to crystal to try to get them to improve. As we can see, very slowly but surely they are changing, as seen with the better rail setup this year. Better setups are what it comes down to, and those are small changes.

haha duuude these people you email have names and faces, they're people i've met or know. i still don't understand how the email some random kid got has references to me when my first name wasn't ever used in any context.... no big deal though, i could care less about crystal mountianus

Its cool dude and what were you wearing? Just Wondering because there is a fair shot that i will be up there at least one more time this year. I have to say great mountain just a little lacking in the park.

crystal mountain probably has a newschoolers account and checks up the regionals to see what everyone is saying about them haha. They probably creeped on your profile or something.

^ haha yeaaaa....

rails werent too bad tho cept idk why they took the dfd and the rainbow down? that hip thing was kinda lame and ice but every else was setup well..

Rumor has it (not guaranteed) that next build they do, (which i believe is Thursday) they are gonna put some rails on Tucks, built kinda into the knuckles to add variety to that park...and i think they'll put the DFD in then along with the Rainbow (which fell over due to that last thaw.) The T box is going to turn into a up box off the knuckle i guess kinda like it was 2 years ago. Which kinda sucks cuz if want a cannon you can just use the up on the a-frame, but whatez...And they may try to make a wallride setup out of the dancefloor, just to try something different. Will the park manager said that last build they had to setup the current rails etc...they only had one little "tonka truck cat" available (because well, thats crystal) that couldn't move shiit., so they are trying, but upper management fucks them over for the most part.

yea it does kinda suck,, cuz that what gets the most traffic, so i usually hike most of the time,,,but idk lets see what happens. Ill be riding neverless.

Yeah, you pretty much have it right. Trying to get all of that done on Thurs. as long as we have a real cat and not a tonka toy. Also, FYI the crew is trying to pursue some real changes to crystals parks, although this can be a long road we are trying hard to put together a proposal for change next season. Better runs, more features, more cat time, etc. We shall see what happens, but cant guarantee anything as Crystal has ALOT on its plate. Cannonsburg and timber and O park are AWESOME. I think its great that these little areas are catering so much to park riders. However, these areas have less going on overall than Crystal which allows them to throw time and especially money at the parks. 3 million dollars in Otsegos case. Crystal with all of the ammenities like 5 restaurants, spas, condos, hotel, golf courses etc. Is understandably alot more gun shy about huge investments in parks, when they have so many other areas to focus on as well, not just skiing or park riding. I do agree with all of you tho, they need to make an investment and probably give better runs for park instead of double pitched runs or off fall line runs, which is where they are now. It will be much easier for the park crew to provide awesome stuff for you guys to ride, with a wider variety of featrures and runs that will make it more fun especially for the more advanced riders. I am not trying to start any sort of arguement about specific stuff, just some informing on where we are trying to get Crystal to go. Hopefully we can make the local expert riders happier about what Crystal is doing!

HERE WE GO!!

Too bad I'll be in college somewhere...but at least we know theres somme progress and people on it. Thanks for the explanation, something is better than nothing..Better runs would be sooo nice tho

hey will also a while ago when i was drviing out of crystal i saw a long ass rainbow and battleship box along with a flat bar rail laying around, couldnt tell if they were in good condition or not. To sketchy to put up in the park?

Yeah you did see a flat down that is out of commish. however, the rainbow and battleship rail, could be put up if we can get better space for them. It also takes like 8 or 10 guys to put it up, both of those rails weigh about 1000 pounds or more each. They were built before my time, before they knew about weight saving fabrication. Def doable for a more advanced park if we get more space, and the riders to come out and help set them up. Really tho we just need to build a bunch of new features. like 10 or more. fingers crossed.
