Crying into my cereal

So went to the doctors this morning about a thumb injury (skiers thumb) and theyve told me my Ulnar collateral ligament is fully torn and theyre gonna operate on monday, put me in a full arm cast for 6 weeks, and no sports for 3 months.

now the doctor was very set in this and as such wouldnt discuss the possibilty (which i understand is medically correct). however, i am likely to get only one week of skiing this year which, for one ive already paid for (1000£:() and this is in almost exactly 4 weeks.

the way i see it is that if i am in a plaster cast and i wrap the hand and arm in shirts and jumpers, then again in tape, the thumb will be so tightly bound and secure that the risk of recurring the injury will be >5% and thus im willing to take the risk. im not sure if impact can damage a ligament, or just flexion? anyone got any advice/opinions as to how i can do this

P.S. I dont need people calling me dumb i understand that it is but skiing is basically the only thing i live for and the thumb on my non-dominant hand really doesnt seem that important to me (again dumb but idc).

Damn as a baseball player Ive heard of plenty of people tearing their UCL but never would have thought it happening from skiing. From friends Ive seen do the recovery process your arm is pretty immobile idk how i would feel about skiing like that. shit is a bummer

Man I'd say go for it. Its gonna eat away at you all winter if you can't ski but are watching edits and staring out the window all the time. Just take it easy

Well youre in luck. This seasons been as dry as parmesan so far.

I would imagine that wrapping/immobilizing would be a good way to prevent too much injury while still skiing. But it would be like a zero crash scenario, you'd just have to take it really really easy.

if you care that much about skiing just go skiing instead of crying into your cereal like a gay bitch and i hope you come back to this thread in 5 years at the ripe old age of 17 and punch yourself in the face for being such a pussy fucko

hope i could help!!!

ik lol and im skiing either way just want to know if anyone has any solutions to reduce risk of repeating the injury lol - just got out of surgery and shit hurts like a motherfucker

I would suggest to get that bitch heal. You can go to your vacation but maybe look at other activities? There has to be something that wont endanger your thumb. Its best to suffer in the short term than spend the rest of your life on arthitis meds

Does your pass have injury insurance, as in they refund the pass if you have a season-ending injury?

Im only doing like 1/2 weeks this winter as im at university now :( so not really an issue but ive got all relevant travel insurance n that yeah - by the time im back on season this summer in south america i imagine itll either be fully recovered or fucked beyond repair lol.

I broke my ring finger and worked on a fishing boat for 7 more weeks before I flew back and got it checked out to confirm it was even broken. Shits fucked but after almost 3 months of PT it's coming along pretty well. I think you're more likely going to be fine. Just dont take any hard landings or swing your arms around, much less fall.

yeah forsure, glad youre healing up! i think itll be ok i think as someone said higher up, the main issue is getting a cast tha doesnt go all the way to the elbow as it might create a pressure point there and id much rather have a floppy thumb for life than a floppy elbow lol

Oh yeah i guess I meant to say that after breaking it and still working a very hand-intensive job the finger wasn't too bad. I think you have relatively low risk if you ski gently and will be fine too. Fall on your shoulder/side not your arm if you fall

ski gently.... errr i think thatll go out the window fairly quick ahah. i guess ill have to though eh :'(. that being said it feels like its healed up fairly well thus far - in a cast too so idk..

Thought I’d give a fun little update to this thread. Went on my trip and skied carefully for about 5 minutes. Had a sick week of freeriding with some fairly good snow. Day 4 I hit a cliff drop landed backseat and hand dragged with my non injured hand, hit an ice boulder and snapped my good thumb. Thumb I had surgery on was fine tho lol. Figured fuck it and finished the week with no poles and both hands taped in bubble wrap. No comps or trips for like a month now so ig I’m fine lol
