Crooked mount on new skis

Hey guys,

This fall I bought a new pair of Magic Js and got Dukes put on them. The purchase came with a free mount, which I thought would be just fine.

Anyways I have only been on them for three short tours including a day for my AST course, when I noticed that the break was really rubbing on the inside edge of my left ski (enough to wear down the scratch-proof top sheet). This was also interfering when I would be trying to put my ski back into ride mode. The brake pressuring the edge of my ski is enough to push the binding off line, making it very frustrating to get back into place and locked down.

After I got home today I propped up the bindings so I could have a look at the drill plates(?). Right away it was apparent that my bindings had been mounted crooked. Looking at this back plate, I measured the difference between the side of the plate to the edge of the ski. Forget the exact numbers but there was 8mm more ski showing on the left side of the binding. So it would look off-center, to the right. On the right ski it is the same issue ,but with slightly less offset, and towards the outside(right) of the ski.

I just want to see what my options are here..

-So if I were to remount them they would need to be set 4mm left to center them properly, and a bit less on the other ski. I don't really feel confident remounting my binding directly beside the old holes. Would this be a bad idea? Also was considering the resale value dropping...

-Ask for a new pair of skis. Go see the store owner and explain to him the situation. I have been a customer for several years and hopefully that he will recognize this and try to figure out a fair solution. I have always thought highly of the store so I

I have always thought highly of the store, but when you're dropping >$1000 on a set they should be mounting them with some care. Am I wrong?

What do you guys think? Does the shop owe me a new pair of sticks, or should I get my skis re-drilled?

TLDR;

-dope skis purchased

-binding's mounted crooked

-what to do?

Thanks,

-Rob

The store owes you a new ski for sure!

And I don't think you should loose your trust to the store because of this, it can happen for everyone who mount skis.

Yeah I'm hoping this is a one time occurrence, no problems in the past. I just don't see how that ski even made it out of the shop if there was any visual check. I'm going to give them a call in the next couple days

They should offer you new skis man, Just sounds like one of the rubber legs came off one side of the jig making in crooked.

Unfortunately alot of techs try and mount skis to quickly and dont take the time to make sure everything is in order.

I totally agreee that the tech should have noticed it when he tried to click a boot into the binding, if he did so?

But yes, probably one of the arm of the mounting plate that haven't been positioned right on the ski, or the rubber peice which is on the arm have been turned the wrong way.

as someone who mounts 50 or 60 skis a dayi'm chucklin at you taking 3 days of skiing to to visually check your own skis

Here is a picture of my left ski. Again from my measurements, the binding is >8mm further from the edge of the ski on the right. I forgot to snap a pic of the other ski but you would see a bit less drastic offset, but towards the outside of my ski instead. So if I were standing in my skis side-by-side it produce a compound effect, moving my entire stance and position over to the right halves of the skis (total of around 15mm to the right).

Thinking back, the few turns I have made on them did feel a little bit odd (Given inconsistent snow, and adjusting to new skis). I would find my left ski would tend to hook up during a right hand turn fairly often, and never felt like I could effectively plane on the snow (or at least how I expected it to).

Judging by the picture, do you think that with my current mount I could expect to feel a difference? Or am I just being crazy. It seems really substantial in person.

Thanks guys

Yeah, that's like, really bad. That is new ski worthy for sure. Usually 1mm or so is fine, but 8mm is pretty huge.

Anyone have any last second opinions on my situation, or how I should approach the shop about it? Im about to head down there in the next hour

Just head in there remain calm. Explain the situation without being pissed (manager will be more likely to respond positively)

See what he says after you show him the 8mm missmount.. If he doesn't offer you a satisfactory response then tell him what you actually expect him to do (which would be supply a new pair of skis)

If you go in there pissed you will most likely get nothing.

Thanks, good advice for sure. The owner of the shop is very well known for his contributions in the local ski community around here. I have every intention to show him complete respect, and trust him to make a solid judgement call. +k

I really wish I didn't have to do this. Its a bad feeling when you're forced to take profits away from a local shop.

Cheers

Wouldnt feel to bad, if they are a test center, they can use the mismounted skis in rental... get their money back in a week.
