Critique My First Edit

Alright so this is my first edit. I just started filming and editing this year. First of I would like to note that my glidecam wasnt balanced correctly so there is some shakiness. Also I understand I need to get more angles and the reason I didnt ski with it is because I just started skiing this year and didnt feel comforatable handling it while skiing. I didnt feel the need to color correct because it was such a nice day but I would like to know your thoughts on that. I used a Panasonic G3 with a 14-40mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens on a Glidecam 2000 Pro. The Glidecam was the only form of stabilization that I used because my tripod is a Tiffen Davis & Sanford ProVista 7518 and is too heavy to ski with. I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit and I am still getting the hang of it. I would like to know your thoughts and suggestions on this edit. +k for constructive criticism and advice! Thanks guys

Firstly I know you said your tripod was too heavy, but You'll need to get one that you can bring, I'm bringing one that's the same weight(4.5kg) and It's going to be fine, I'm planning on following with it. Also your glidecam wasn't done that well, which you said was down to the balance, but you weren't really using it to it's potential, for what you were doing you may as well have used a tripod, as all you were doing was panning.

Thanks for the input +k. I will try and play around with it next time I get out there but do you think I could get up and close with the lens I have?

Well i only have one lens and I dont think I can get close to the rail without leaving out most of the subject. I see a lot of people who have wide angle or fish eye lens that get up close and personal with the subject but I dont think my lens would be able to.

Get a microphone if you don't have oneuse som slow-motion?

Try to use another song, I felt like it was 5 seconds that was being replayed all the time..

Well do you really think i need a mic? Most edits ive seen dont have audio because they have music over it. I felt as though this song was good for a short edit but thank you for your input

If you don't think so, the its ok, I just said that I think the edit would have been better with some sounds of the rails, snow++

Watch your framing, some of the shots the skier head was out of the frame in the middle of the rail, just take a step back.

It felt like almost every shot was from skier's right and the middle of the rail. Get different angles of the same trick e.g the blind 2 at 1:32, film one from the top then cut to the bottom angle. Get creative in your shots and also get some movement in your shots, use the glidecam to your advantage not just as a tripod. I know you said you weren't confident skiing with it but you can still walk with it.

Lots of your shots where shaky to start then a second before he hit the rail you steadied it, cut the shakiness out or be smooth from when he drops. when you edit it lots of the shots started with him pushing off and a couple of seconds before he hits the rail. e.g 0:49 it starts of shaky and 0:49-0:52 is pointless and doesn't add any thing to the edit.

sorry for the double post but use a song that isn't so repetitive. The edit was a good length and the skiing wasn't repetitive and had a variety. for an early season edit

Thank you so much for the advice! +K Just wondering about 2 different angles, should i get the skier to do the same trick twice, starting out filming him from the top say on the right side and then the 2nd time from the bottom on the left side?

Yeah, generally film multiple angles of the same trick, either choose the best angle after or cut between both.

try to edit more to the music and also make sure that the song you use works with the footage that you will use. i didn't feel that that music flowed to well with the skiing.

I feel like there was a lot of waste in the clips, by that I mean you could cut a lot off the beginning and end of each clip.

Also try getting two angles for a trick and switch it between between angles
