Creating vectors from jpegs?

i have this image of a black and white football and i need to take the outline of it and make it into a vector. im assuming i would just create different objects of each shape in illustrator?

is there a way to do this without creating each line with the pen tool??

maybe a mask kinda like in photoshop?

You can use live trace. However, it is usually not as accurate as doing it by hand unless the original is very high resolution.
