How do they measure distances using the red shift? I always thought it was just proof that the universe is expanding. This stuff is so interesting to me.
Doesn't surprise me. If it is a structure in nature that works exceedingly well then it makes sense that it would be seen in many different things. You can already see this in plants and patterns and stuff in nature. Doesn't surprise me at all that that structure is replicated in different things.
i think that we make up a body and we are all cells doing something for a reason, and the universe is just someones body cellls, and each planet is for different things, like blood cells, sperm cells, etc.
He sorta did, I was getting at more of how nature has a tendency to use a pattern over and over again because it seems to work well. Could explain why they are similar and perhaps why other objects look like this.
The universe is not infinite, and if each of our neurons were a universe for like... molecules, it would not be infinite, just incomprehensibly large. And I agree, I have often thought about how our universe could be the equivalent of a cell for an even larger organism.
the disorder of it all probably explains a bit about why it shows up so much seeing as spontaneous things are favored to things that are disordered. according to thermodynamics. i'm just trying to sound smart so i have no idea if that actually applies.
Hubble's Constant states a body's recession speed at a given distance from us (approximately). Therefore, we can get an educated guess at distances by measuring a star/galaxy/whatever's redshift.
the image of the universe is just a model, there are several plausible theories on the shape/ structure of our physical universe. it would be logical though, as GLrunner13 has been saying, that patterns which are efficient in nature show up in all kinds of places on all kinds of scales.
He didn't ruin the thread. You just have to take issue with him throwing it out there. I'm not christian or religious but it's still a thought. It's not a redic notion to believe in a first cause or higher power. I agree most religions and churches are nuts but he just mentioned a belief in God.
That univers picture is crazy i looked at it for like 5 mins just wondering about it. I hate thinking about that stuff because it just pisses me off that i wont get an answer to any of my questions.
Ahh totally forgot about using Hubble's Law into the equation. What would be cool is to find out just HOW fast the universe is expanding outward and at what acceleration. I'm sure some physicists have done it.
