Crazy Lightning Stories

In the summers Im a Lifty at the hill during biking season . we have to

be really carefull aboutlighning because Lift towers are like giant

lightning rods. So one day im working as a storm rolls in and we are

listening for thunder. As we are doing this all me and my co-worker see

is a flash a Boom and a HUGE bolt of electricity gaps from the top of

tower one and the ground less than 20 feet from me. Im like, howd I not

get electricuted!?!?! So it turns out lightning struck one of the

towers farther up the line and travelled down to the bottom station,

and before it got the the station and fucked everything up ( short out

electrical/electricute people) its gapped to the ground.

Sparknotes: working as a lifty in the summer chairlift got struck by lightning

sorry about the spelling

I was sitting in a fold out chair with somw friends after a dirt bike race. We were waiting for awards, and we could see a rain cloud closing. We were sitting about 15 feet away from a metal fence. All of a sudden, HUGE sparks started flying off a metal post just as the f words starting flyin. We started to get up as a blinding light followed by a BOOOOOM smashed the fence, knocking it over. We sat in our van not touching the sides for a few hours....

did you guys know lightening actually strikes from the ground up? The visible light come after the actual strike and makes it look like it is coming from the sky...

One time I was drinking at on my friends porch and lightening struck directly across the street in front of us. It was like a sonic boom and for a second everything was white...so insane

Not exactly a lightning story, but a transformer exploded last winter while i was high with a few of my friends, and the sky lit up and changed all kinds of colors. this happened a few times within maybe 15 minutes, and needless to say we flipped our shit. its one thing when somethings trippy, but when the sky changes colors its legitimatly fucked up.

thats not true at all

its caused by friction in the clouds.

and why would it look like it came from the sky if it came from the ground? you obviously going to see it go from the ground up instead

your wrong and right. it can rise up from tall object thus creating the rumor or whatever that it comes from the ground. this is from yahoo answers

As negative charges collect at the base of the cloud, they repel the electrons near the ground's surface. This leaves the ground and the objects on it with a positive charge.

As the attraction between the cloud and the ground grows stronger, electrons shoot down from the cloud. The electrons move in a path that spreads in different directions - like a river delta. Each step is approximately 50 metres long and the branching path is called a stepped leader. Further electrons follow, making new branches. The average speed at which the stepped leader cuts through the air is about 270,000 miles per hour.

As the stepped leader approaches the ground, positive electrical sparks rise from tall objects such as trees and buildings. These sparks are known as upward streamers. When the stepped leader meets the upward streamer, the lightning channel is completed. When the lightning channel is complete, the electrons in the channel rush towards the ground. This is the return stroke which lights up the channel. The first electrons to reach the ground light up the bottom of the channel. The upper part of the channel glows as the electrons move rapidly down it. Therefore, the light from the flash starts at the ground and moves upwards. The branches of the stepped leader are also lit up, but not as brightly as the main channel as there are less electrons present. The lightning flash ends when there are no electrons left in the channel.

If lightning flickers, it is probably because there has been more than one return stroke. Following a lightning flash, the lightning channel is momentarily empty and it is then possible for electrons from another part of the cloud to enter it. The movement of the electrons into the channel is called a dart leader. It causes another return stroke to occur. The repeated return strokes and dart leaders make the lightning appear to flicker because of the great speed at which they occur.

my friends dad got struck once in his backyard put him in the hospital for a good while then about 2 years later he was camping with my friend (his son) and his other kids and he was struck again...talk about shitty luck.

Lol funny you made this thread today. At work today I saw a powerline get struck by lightning it was fucking awesome. My neighbours house has gotten struck I and it burst all the light bulbs upstairs and cracked the ceiling /wall in their bathroom were the shower is.

So at work (im a sailing instructor) last summer a huge storm rolled in so we closed up. When we came back a half hour later a boat on the dock was on its side, soo a co-worker and I went to put it back up. We took a power boat over to teh dock and as soon as we righted the boat, we heard a huge crack and a blinding light hit us. After almost shitting my pants we found out that lightning hit a tree about 20 ft away. Thank god it wasnt the huge ass metal mast we had just put in the air

I'm a bit perplexed by this bullshit

So a couple of things, lightning that hits the ground, but also has forks, resembles something akin to a river system. Why are the forks seemingly going towards the ground (generally) and not the other way around?

So if lightning strikes from the ground up, what causes sheet lightning and other bolts that remain in the atmosphere?

i was watching a storm out of the window and lightning struck the tree about 7 feet from where i was, shattered the tree pretty much and it fell. scared the fuck outta me.

We had a pretty crazy sunset on Saturday. Not crazy, but badass. If you can imagine lightning striking in the horizon between the two landmasses
