i didn't. you need some wrenches to loosen the main bolts on the crank, then it just comes out, atleast mine did and just make sure you keep all the bearings in order and shit, and if you have extra parts at the end, you fucked up

i know there is a very simple and fairly cheap tool to get, i think danscomp.com carries it, its basically a threaded rod with nuts on the ends, i am not sure if it works for removing the bearings though.

unless you are going to be doing it often just take it to a bike shop.
