C.R. UPDATE: Johnson was wearing helmet when accident occured inbounds

According to reports from his sponsors, C.R. Johnson is currently in University of Utah Hospital with severe head trauma. C.R. was filming in at Brighton when the accident happened. He had jumped a cliff and was collecting some lost gear when Kye Petersen launched the same air and collided with him, sources say. According to people close to the scene, as of Friday December 9, C.R. was in intensive care and sedated to aid his recovery.

The accident did not happen in the backcountry, as originially reported, but inbounds at Brighton.

"I think it's important that people know C R was wearing a hemet when this happened," says Evan Raps, who witnessed the accident. "We all decided to wear them full time this year. Unfortunately the impact was below the helmet brow. People should know this was an accident and a freak thing."

^i think kye should be concerned for cr. a good friend would be there to care for his friend, not smother people with apoligies for what he did. it was noones fault, it was an accident

dude, this suck so much. i was just chillen with the him a few weeks back...i miss you and feel better. Come over to my house and i'll feed you chicken soup.... love/love

Yeah good luck to CR in his recovery...and lets not forget Kye in this time cos its dreadful to be in his position....

spread the love

Dude don't be so fucking ignorant you as well as 99% of the people on this site, including myself, have no idea what actually happened that day. The key word is accident.

what happened is they were all gonna go off this cliff or whatever like one right after the other,(thats what i heard) it just happened to be kye who was behind him, they both messed up its not totally anyones fault.

dont be a dick about it.

hit a tree, you piece of shit. it was an ACCIDENT. they were skiing a roller or drop as a train and CR went down. there was nothing Kye could have done to avoid the impact. people like you who jump to conclusions and make assumptions about things you know nothing about are fucking retards. i hope YOU learn a fucking lesson.

its easy in accidents the blame the person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time but we should, it could have been any going behind CR, its a freak thing and i hope CR gets better and is able to ski again soon

get well soon CR, i wonder what cliff and tricks they were doing and if it was caught on film so that it could serve as a lesson to people watching where they jump

hes like fighting for life, like has a good chance of not ever being able to ski, or at least ski profesionaly anymore. i wouldnt put such a huge crash in a movie. it would just be like such a downer to see in a movie.

Although it is a tragedy, I am extremely pleased to hear that this whole group of pros decided to wear the helmets full time this year. Hopefully he gets better soon.

anyone remember about 6 or 7 years ago when that dude from freeze died doing the road gap? it was like an effing huge drop and he came up a tiny bit short and died on impact. it was horrible. i seem to recall his friends and family being there to watch. gut-wrenching

yeah it sounds like one of those things like when your driving along and suddenly the guy in front of you slams on his breaks and you rear end him, and there is nothing you can do to keep from hitting him.

uh, not follow so close? WTF? have you taken driver's ed yet?

a better example would be a deer or someone rearending you, because that way its basically unavoidable from your end and you are not at fault.

there was a whole bunch of guys skiing on milly at brighton. they were skiing in a train, and went over a roller, windlip type of deal, not ob. cr threw a 3 and crashed, apparently he was gathering gear, and as trains go, the next person went off. he was wearing a helmet but kye hit right below the brow. dont put blame on either of them, we all ski in trains at times, and it easily could have happened to any of us. cr is in an induced coma, to aid the recovery. there is a very good chance he will make a full recovery........ get better cr....

we don't ALL do trains, at least on the ski hill.

i am way too paranoid for that shit. regardless, i do hope everyone makes a swift recovery.

CR Johnson Seriously Injured

By Christopher Jerard, yesterday

CR Johnson sustained a serious head injury last Thursday while filming inbounds at Brighton ski area in Utah.

Evan Raps, and several other riders who work with the film company C.R. is a part-owner of, The Bigger Picture, were filming an inbounds jump sequence that involved a rapid-fire succession of riders coming off a small hit — a practice common to ski and snowboard films. Raps, who jumped last in the group, and didn’t actually see the accident, told Freeskier that C.R. was the first off the jump, with Kye Peterson jumping directly after him, somehow coming out of the air and landing on C.R..

“I think it's important that people know C.R. was wearing a helmet when this happened,” says Evan Raps, who was at the scene of the accident. "We all decided to wear them full time this year. Unfortunately the impact was below the helmet brow. This was an accident and a freak thing."

Brighton ski patrol officially reports that the accident occurred inbounds and on the Millicent area of the mountain under the lift. He was air-lifted from Brighton to the University of Utah Hospital after the injury.

Currently C.R. is in very serious condition and being held in the critical care unit at the University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City. He is in a coma. His mother Lorraine and father Russ are with C.R. in Utah.

C.R. Johnson has been an innovator friend in the ski industry since he was 15 years old. He first appeared in Freeskier with an impressive 1440 sequence photo taken at Squaw Valley in 1999 and has been a force in ski magazines and film ever since.

But far beyond C.R.’s huge athletic talent, he is a deeply thoughtful person who has worked diligently to progress the sport he loves both on and off the hill. Tonight C.R. and his family need the thoughts and prayers of all of those in the ski industry and beyond.

“C.R. improved for about 5 minutes yesterday. Yesterday was Sunday and the prayers of everyone must have helped. Russ put up a card from the McConkeys in C.R.’s room and I think that card from his friends helped too,” Lorraine told us today.

Our best thoughts are with C.R. and his family tonight and in the coming days. Please email your thoughts and words of support, love and encouragement for C.R. and his family to loveforCR@freeskier.com, and we will pass them on to the Johnsons.

If you want to send mail, his family has asked that you send it to:

i hope he gets better soon and i think its a great idea to email him to show him our support.

Skiing. As dangerous as it is, its our sport and we love it.

Remember Dan Treadway back in 2001? when he shattered his pelvis and nobody thought he would ski again? Now hes killing it. Just look at his picture in the new January edition of Freeskier Mag.

and then Picabo Street, 1998 Gold Medalist, Shattered her thigh, made a full recovery, made the olympics in 2002.

Lets hope he pulls out like they did, Both of them were actually in life threatening positions, Sharp and Shattered bones + arteries are not a good mix.

R.I.P. Trevor Peterson.

Small update from CR's sister this afternoon. He's been moved to the Neurology dept, which is much much better than the ICU. He's got a good number of neurologists watching over him now. His condition hasn't really changed but it's good he's got the smartest of the smart monitoring his condition. On a positive note, they didn't have to drill today to drain fluids from his brain. It seems like they believe his brain will reduce swelling on it's own. Other than that, keep thoughts and prayers flowing, no one is allowed to see him right now -to reduce his brain activity- but prayers and vibes for him and his family can do nothing but help.
