Coping with an injury

So a few weeks ago, I tore my ACL and partially tore my meniscus. I am not getting surgery until May because it's my final semester of college, and I didn't want to be on crutches for the last few weeks. The point of this thread is to ask how you guys cope with stuff like this? This is my first major injury, and not being able to ski is absolutely crushing me right now. Not only can I not ski, I cant play basketball or do much other physical activity. I have been trying to channel this negativity into going to the gym, but that can only help so much. I need some sort of adrenaline rush, I am losing my mind.

TL; DR: tore ACL, need some sort of rush

I know what it is like. I had surgery on my foot, and I was out for a good 6 weeks. Not nearly as long as you, but it's painful not being able to do anything. I was out of commission in early fall, so I missed out on the last opportunities of the season to bike. Instead, I was stuck on the couch doing shit all watching biking edits with a sad face.

Unless you go sit-skiing or something like that, it is pretty hard to do get any sort of adrenaline rush without straining your knee. I'd say rest, keep going to the gym, play video games, and concentrate on graduating. The easier you take it now, the faster and better you will recover for next season.

It's hard being on newschoolers watching the new edits rolling in every day when you can't go skiing. Hell, I get super agitated on mondays when I know I can't ski until the following weekend. It's rough.

Anyway, it will make you more pumped for next season. Good luck.

i fucked up my knee in november and im having surgery in a week. recently i've been bombing down fat hills on my long board to get adrenaline

1. find a car.

2. get on the highway.3. unbuckle your seatbelt.

4. take your hands off the wheel.

5. close your eyes.

6. push the gas pedal to the floor.

7. ???

8. profit

but really, if that doesn't get your adrenalin going, i don't know what will.

Try some freestyle wheelchair shit in your driveway or basement. Do some ballet on your crutches. Shit anything hard to do or funny will help keep your mind off shit.

Get surgery ASAP, you'll be out of the crutches in a week after that. I'am currently 1 month and a week after having surgery for tore ACL and partially tore meniscus (same as you) and I'm already biking and almost recovered full range of motion. If I keep up the pace i'll be running in a month. My advice is, do it as soon as possible. May will be your four month mark; you'll be running and hitting de gym by that time!

Do it! NOW!

How's that for a bit of adrenaline rush?

fuck an adrenaline rush, get surgery and PT your ass off. i wasnt off crutches as quickly as dude above me but was back skiing at 4.5 months which was sooner than i expected so i guess the work paid off. get it done

Nope, not at all. First two days after surgery are quite painful but that's just about it.

The secret to a fast recovery is icing. Every two hours if possible (20 minutes each time) or atleaste 3 or 4 times a day. And believe it or not, most people are too damn lazy to do this and they don't realize how fast they will recover by doing it.

I did the same thing to my knee about this time last year and didn't get surgery till late april.

good call on waiting, cause the first two weeks after surgery are gonna be the worst of your life, not gonna sugar coat it. before you go in for surgery stock up your computer with movies, games, whatever shit you're into.

if you have the choice between patella and hamstring graft, I'd go patella. that's what I had done, and though I've never had one with my hamstring, my surgeon recommended it because it can hold up better under impact thus making it better for freeskiing (my surgeon used to live in banff and is the go-to for the canadian ski race team or something) but it'll be a more painful recovery.

to pass the time before and after my surgery I pretty much just worked on my non-physical hobbies. Played a lot of guitar. if you don't play an instrument or something, now would be a good time to pick one up. but I also found I became a lot more social. not having to wake up early every morning of the winter made it a lot easier to hang out with people and interact.

most importantly just stay positive and focus on getting healthy again. it's a hard road but I'm just over 9 months post surgery and I'm doing amazing. staying off jumps this year but my rail game has never been better.

Get yourself a blood flow stimulator, if it's not a full tear surgery might not even be necessary. I was supposed to have ankle surgery but it healed completely with a stimulator from the site below.
