Converting VLC files to imovie

is there a way of doing this? i have some footage from my friends camera that is in a super weird format (he has one of the new sony cameras that has a hard drive...) i can view it using VLC on my mac, but i wanna transfer it so i can put it into an edit on imovie. is there a way to do this?

first off, what is the format? you said you can watch it in VLC Media Player? that doesn't clarify much. Most likely, there will be a converter some where out there, or an editing program that will allow you to save the video as a different format type..
