Confident vs Cocky

So, something I read in another thread (You got game ..) sparked up this idea (Thank you EastShoreDrive and your raw advice on getting one nights stands). Why is confident different/similar to cocky, and vice versa? I've heard a lot saying they are similar and merely divided by a thin line, but I've also heard a lot saying they are totally different...

Personally, they are both very similar and very different. Confidence is knowing your own capabilities and potential, and having a sound self image that is not affected by what others say. You know what you want and what your are, and don't feel the need to prove that to others. They are able to recognize and embrace their own weaknesses or failures and use those to grow, not letting them have a negative connotation on your further actions and decisions. The also have a level of self respect and prioritize their own values, instead of trying to meet others' expectations and values.

On the other hand, there are two types of cocky:

1) People who don't have enough confidence to believe they are socially equal to others, so they constantly try to bring other people down to leave themselves in a "higher" social standing. They try to prove themselves to be something more then what they think they are, again focusing on what others are thinking about them, not about what they really are.

2.) People who genuinely think they are superior to others, and act on it. Enough said.

I could write so much more about this, but I think you guys get the idea. Now its time for your thoughts

Confident = Going up to a girl and asking her name

Cocky = Going up to a girl and telling her yours

I went up to a girl at a party and said " I hi my name is___________" and then she proceeded to rape my face. It was cool until I got cockblocked by her not-as-drunk friends.
 
confidence = the kid who knows how good he is and won't try and play himself up he knows his limits

cocky= that douchbag kid that everyone hates because he sucks but will try and make themselves sound like there better than anyone on the mountain.

I've come to this conclusion: Kids who are extremely cocky and outspoken probably have some inner self doubt about themselves (similar to bullies). Whereas someone who is completely 100% confident may not feel the need to boast about whatever it is they are good at; they know they're good. There's nothing cooler than seeing someone be very reserved about what they do, and then finally seeing them do it and they absolutely rip.
 
Girls tend to like cocky boys. Women tend to like confident men. I personally cannot stand when a guy is self-obsessed or overly cocky. Don't tell me how rad you think you are, if you're rad, I will figure that out.
 
Cocky: I'm awesome let's fuck.

Confident: Hey, you're totally awesome! I'm pretty awesome too, we should definitely fuck-- It would be awesome.
 
Cocky: Read skiierman's post before he was banned.

Confident: Read tomPietrowski post giving advice about what boots to purchase.
 
confidence is doing something. cockiness is doing something and having to show everyone that you're doing it.
 
confidence is inner self-belief gained through experiencecockiness is outer projection of self-belief that may or may not be felt on the inside

that said there are a lot of people with delusional confidence
