Concussions

alright, so i just had a bad concussion, where i couldn't remember anything, even my name. my question is when you get these do you sit out? or keep charging? cause i feel good enough to keep going. but my aunt who's a brain doctor says wait. and this is my second in 4 days. if you sit out. what do you do in the mean time?

sparknotes: what do you do after you get a serious concussion? sit or keep going?

Check that your helmet isnt broken and your good to go, just take it chill for the rest of the day, like dont hit the bigger jumps

yea, that's what i was thinking, like skiing rails for a few days. and i need to get a new helmet i think, cause i've taken a few diggers wearing it

I took a break for a couple days. It kinda freaked me out not knowing why im in a hospital or what the fuck was going on. I aslo got a new helmet.

definately take a brake

i was sidelined all last season with post concussion syndrome and it sucked horribly. if you hit your head when you are still recovering you risk very serious injury and even death

I've always sat mine out. Then again, I'm a Paramedic and my fellow employees would give me endless shit if I went back out while still suffering symptoms.

Let me put it to you this way:

1) You're aunt, who is a brain doctor, is telling you to take it easy and sit it out.

2) Having 2 concussions in 4 days is NOT good. The reason that you don't remember anything is probably a direct result of re-injuring the first concussion you had.

3) Wearing a helmet with an existing concussion isn't necessarily going to prevent ANOTHER one.

Here is my honest advice to you. Since it sounds like you're going to get a new helmet, order it online. That'll force you to sit out at least until it gets to your house. Also, if you know anyone who can do a neurological trauma exam (aka EMT, Paramedic, Nurse, BRAIN DOCTOR), have them give you one.

This^

Don't even think about continuing, rest until you get full functions back.

Don't fuck with your brain, it's one of the most important things you have.

I've learnt the hard way with a lot of concussions, you need to sit it out or it takes months to heal.

It depends on how bad it is.... last season I was out for 3 months because my brain started bleeding... Also if this was your second concussion in 4 days you NEED to sit out. Its better to take a couple weeks off, than be dead.

I don't have the article, but, I read that after a concussion you should take a week off of everything, school/work, sports, etc. It will help your brain recover better and if you keep charging, and it happens again, your chances of dementia when you are older increase by 25%(somewhere around that %)

Well, i would suggest you have it checked out by a doctor. Are you seriously going to take the advice of NS before a doctors? Am I the only one who thinks this thread is slightly stupid/dangerous? You need to understand that concussions are no joke, and people end up with permanent brain damage, even dead, when not taking them seriously. I'm surprised your "brain doctor" aunt has not told you these things. Go see a doctor, asap.

I had one a couple years ago where I couldnt even remember what happened. You should sit out and wait like for minimum a week.

I wish I could tell you, but I can't remember.

Seriously?!?!?!?!?! This has gotta be the dumbest thing I have ever seen posted on NS. You are told by a Brain Doctor to chill for awhile, but you go to NS for a second opinion. I think whatever brain you have has been damaged way beyond the point to which it matters anymore. Just keep charging dude. You might want to start testing out the liquid diet now.

i'm not trying to be stupid. i'm just sayin, that i feel fine, everythings normal. i was fine like after like an hour after it happened. and i wasn't talking about going on the same. like woulk i be fine just skiing around, possibly just riding rails? nothing big on them?

its like getting rediculously high. except worse!

If your aunts a brain doctor you should definatly listen to her.

And i recommend getting a new helmet

Dude, for christs sake! Use just a little bit of common sense. But maybe it was shook out of you after to concussions in 4 days. That must be it. I seriously cannot believe you are asking these questions in all seriousness, it's simply too stupid. My conclusion is that you are either kidding, or trying to act tuff. Like Mr. Huck said, keep shredding, go big or go home!

okay okay, i was just wondering what you guys normally do once you have to sit out.. but okay yea it was sorta stupid to also ask if to keep going

We have to bust on you; it's pretty serious. If you were playing in the NHL, you'd be done for the season. Definitely replace the helmet. Once your helmet takes a huge hit like that, you are supposed to toss it and get a new one. As to what to do; as long as you can still remember your NS Username and password, your fine.

sit it out, hit your head a second time and brain damage could be a lot worse. Listen to the brain doctor...in the meantime read a book

Yeah exactly this is what I have been trying to tell him. And he's 16. I had concussions from hockey and they suck, even years later. Besides, if you really hit your head that hard you probably won't want to ski because you won't feel well.

I'd say take at least 2 months off, in the mean time read books and do minor physical excercise, don't spend time on the computer or watching tv b/c too much light and stimulation from the screen is not good for concussions. honestly the best way to heal is to isolate yourself in a dark room (i even suggest taking time off school) listen to your aunt and not just a bunch of skiers. brain injuries can have long term effects that you may not realize right now. I would easily trade a broken bone for every concussion i've had. let your brain heal as well as possible man, your gonna need it.

to the OP and anyone who is saying anything less than 3 weeks off is completely ignorant of what concussions really do to you.

The kid who posted the second impact syndrome is really the only person who has made a logical response, and the paramedic too.

You NEED to wait until you haven't had any symptoms (headache, confusion, dizziness, etc) for at least a week. In reality you should be seeing a doctor.

CONCUSSIONS ARE NOT TO BE FUCKED WITH.

a concussion is brain trauma, in plain english: you have damaged your brain.

I got in a car accident in the middle of last season, got my 3rd concussion. I spent almost 3 months out cause of it, and it was only a stage two. I had to have weekly doctors visits to check progress so I could go back to anything other than just walking. Hell I was going against doctors orders when I went out and just stood on the hill taking pics. These things are serious and since I am 99.9% sure you don't have a MD license , you shouldn't be making the calls if your okay or not.

I am now dyslexic and my personality is definitely different. I have friends who are far worse off than me, one had one concussion and went back to working out immediately after, ended up relapsing. He has a completely different personality, is dyslexic, can't focus or stay awake in class, and has definitely lost a few IQ points. The other has had 7 concussions and is in the same boat, the moral of his story is don't play hockey.

Do not take advice from anyone on NS about concussions when it comes to are you okay or not. Shin bang, and broken wrists are one thing, hell I still ride with broken bones, but do not fuck with head injuries. Talk to your aunt, she knows whats up.

oh. my. fucking. god. are you serious OP? how old are you?
i dont want to sound like an asshole, but goddamn people are getting more and more stupid these days. must be all the concussions.....(i know, poor joke).
seriously, your aunt, a brain doctor, is telling you to sit out after you have had not 1, but 2 concussions in less than a week....are you're coming on HERE and asking if you should listen to her? my hell.
im not an MD, but i do have 8 years worth of biology education (im 2 years deep into my PhD in cell biology) and i've been around the medical field my whole life (mother is an RN). i've also had 3 concussions in my life time. do NOT screw around with these injuries. hell, your brain is probably still swollen and not functioning properly. it can take months or even years for some concussion sufferers to return to completely normal function, and you've had 2 in less than a week.
helmet or no helmet, if you have even one concussion you should take a long break. you need time to allow your brain to recover. even if you did not damage your brain during the concussion, there is still swelling that will affect its function. this swelling can put a lot of pressure on the brain and if you were to hit your head again you could do more severe, even permanent damage.

Blake from having 5 concussions that have sent me to the hospital id give it at least a week and if u dont have head aches or anything u should be good. The consiquences if u go bad early and get another one arent worth it. by the way that was a gnarly fall

OP read this post carefully. if you couldn't even remember your name then you should not be skiing for quite some time. hitting your head again will just make you sit out for longer and could potentially kill you, do a little research about Second Impact Syndrome.
