starting my search for a laptop for school next year, not exactly what i want or should get. i'm looking to use it for research, reports, hopefully some beginner movie editing, simple music recording and editing and of course browsing ns. just looking for opinions and suggestions.

yep. go with what steve has. although the apples are more expensive, i believe that they are more durable when dropped and are also better for what your going to be using it for (video editing etc.). if you were just doing papers and internet and music listening, i then would go with a PC because they are cheaper but for the stuff your doing, go mac.

no matter if you go with a mac or pc remember to get the extened warrenty. When I got my pc from bestbuy, i payed like an extra 175 bones for a 3 year no questions asked warrenty, just used it the other day, my memory went bad, and got upgraded from1 to 2 gb of ram for free!

definitely , IMO best buy has the best warranty hands down in the electronic industry ..

i have had countless great experiences with their warranty

go with a macbook or macbook pro for sure. As for as editting video is concerned, iMovie is a great beginner's program, very simple to use. Plus with a mac you can eventually upgrade to Final Cut or Adobe Premiere if you want. As far as audio stuff is concerned, macs also have garageband which is alot of fun to fool around on, make simple stuff. Mac's also dont really have any problems with viruses which is a huge plus. As was said earlier in the thread, make sure you go with some sort of extended warranty thing, because although you might think that you won't need it...its always good to have down the line

okay i went to best buy, and the dude there said all the same things you guys just did, def going mac

yes i would definitly go for mac...seeing as it fits the needs you are going to want it to do (music/video editing) and pc dosen't really have to strong of programs to do it (cept for adobe premiere) but mac just beats em out...the reason im going to get a macbook for my school computer is becasue of the operating system

yes for all these years Windows has been the shit, it has kicked the crap out of any other competition XP was and still is their best...I just believe that mac is headed in more of a positive direction with their OS development...VISTA bombed my parents have it on their computer and my XP runs so much better than vista...and plus has the service pack even came out for vista yet? thats a long time to let companies/homes/everyone who has a problem with vista sit in the dark....mac is the future.

you know if you have an copy of XP you can install it on the macbook too. i have mac 10.5 and XP running on mine. I pretty much use XP for playing jibberish or if I have to run some random program that I need for school.

for all you that have macs out there what sizes do you have and what are your thoughts about if its too much, not enough or just right. I'm probably going with the mac book, the pro is way spendy and the air only has like two usb ports(i thought that was kind of dumb).

the macbook is great, and if you order it off amazon there is no tax and you can get a $75 rebate. that makes it cost $1025 after the rebate for the cheapest one, which is probably good enough. if you run out of hard drive space if you're editing video you probably just want to buy a big external hard drive. i know about 10 people who have the macbook including me and everyone loves it.

deffintly get a mac, i will never buy a pc again just too many viruses and other things go wrong, whatever dont buy a dell, sure there cheap but my mouse and dvd player stopped working after 2 months.

depends on waht your doing or want it to do...if you are just using it to chill school work browse then the min/stock style should suit you well...but if you want editing capabilities id roll with a 2gb of ram and maybe do a hard drive up grade? but if not the external is a cheaper way i believe you can get those cheap...other upgrades are just what you'd like....and the air don't ever think about that pill hahahahhhhhhhhhhhh

if you have an email address ending in .edu (which you should if you're going to a college) go the apple website and click the educational link at the bottom, and you get a decent deal on anything, i got my ipod back in the day with it and will get a new computer with it soon (even though i technically graduated, my email address is still valid).

You can get the most basic macbook for $999.

i have a macbook pro 15 incher that i must have got all the way back in 2006, its still trucking along just great, i can chat on ichat, browse NS on safari, and still keep a project open in Final Cut Pro. bascially im happy with it
