Ok here's my deal..

I have a MiniDV camera and a firewire cable which I have been fooling around with on friends computers, but since my family is looking into getting a new comp, which ones, either Apple or PC, within reasonable pricerange would be good for me?

Also which programs would you suggest for a newbie editor?

apples rock for graphics and shit like that. for new to editing, iMovie (pretty sure that comes standard with most computers) is real easy to use, and works pretty well.

cool thanks guys, where do you think I could get my hands on a cheap G4 ?

Yeh man the new apples kick ass for any graphic shit you wanna do but imovie wont let you do much thats complicated. alright to start with but avid or adobe premier is really good to do more complicated stuff. yeh anyway apple are best for editiing but you can get pronblems with their compatibility with other stuff tho

you cant get your hands on a cheap g4. apples are so nice, but so expensive. i am making a pc and ordering all my parts. it is 600 without monitor or dvd burner. its mac equivelent would run 2500 retail.

the emacs and imacs are good for basic editing but if you are more serious you will want a g4. a quality g4 is like 3000-4000 retail.so nice though.

if your on a budget get either a imac or emac. or for the same price build your own pc. 600 will get you a nice system. 1000 for a nicer system and a dvd burner. im sick of typing.....

Yea Apple is the way to go for video editting. Make sure to get Final Cut Pro 4 it just came out. It will probably be confusing at first, but its one of the best programs out there. Better than any PC ones that I have used. Its not so much the computer that matters, because you can get a sweet PC, but programs like Adobe Premier suck compared to Final Cut.

Mac forever. Super stable. Unlike Premiere. Final Cut Pro 4 rules. Imovie comes with OSX package and is great place to start. Consider that size of hardrive when purchasing. 12G = 5 Min of Mini DV

There is no way that 5 min of film takes up 12G. First of all it depends on the quality of the camera. Mini dv quality ranges from very good to very poor.

The new 17 inch iMac is the way to go if you want to do on the fly DV editing. Bump it up to 768+ on ram and it has the option of the superdrive. Couple that machine with final cut pro and you have a dvd authoring editing station for under 2 grand. You can't go wrong.

Thats probably a little expensive. But if you want the best computer out there right now get the G5 with dual 2.0 GHz processors. I would go with a dual 1.42 GHz G4 or a 15' powerbook with a superdrive. Get the iMac if you aren't willing to spend as much money though. Those are really good, and are cheap.

apples are dope and all, but i can get a dvd authoring computer for under 1 grand, and i t will be twice as powerful as your mac. and it will burn all 4 formats.

do you knwo if if i can get FCP 4 for PC? its not much different than premier, but i want it.

No, you cant get FCP for PC...

And Adobe is not going to make Premiere for Mac anymore, so Final Cut Pro is your only option, unless you consider iMovie to be one??? But since Premiere and FCP are basically the same, not really a problem there.

Premiere sucks...Final Cut Express does more than Premiere does, even iMovie smokes, and you can go onto Limewire or Acquisition (both are filesharing programs for Macs, I reccommend Acquisition) and DL plug-in's for iMovie that are fuckin sick, Final Cut Pro style effects for next to nothing.
