Computering question

For my business I have a laptop that never moves and stays in the same place. I have a monitor hooked up to it but the computer is getting old and i am due for an upgrade. The question is should I just buy a desktop computer or is it fine to use a laptop through a monitor? Are desktop computers faster? Should I get one of those all in one desktops or the ones with the big external drive things?
Any help would be much appreciated and + k for anyone

If the device is going to be stationary then there is no question you should purchase a desktop over a laptop. If you make it yourself, you will be getting almost 2x the power in your desktop for the same price compared to a laptop.

Really I would be very keen to build my own for the experience and all but is it very difficult? I don't have any knowledge on how to do any of that as well

I would get a laptop unless you need a really powerful computer. Laptops are so much more popular that they are approaching the price of a desktop. Often cheaper once you factor in the screen and all that (although you said you already have that)

Desktops are dying though, every time my work gets a new computer it is a laptop. For small business type computing laptops are fine and the hard drives are all like 5% full (because it's all email and spreadsheet stuff)

It is pretty much like putting together a Lego set, except the directions are much less details and you have to improvise a lot. I don't think it is hard, just watch a few videos on how to do it, they are all built the same way except some parts are installed different ways.
It really just depends what your trying to get out of it, if this computer is just going to be used to store information, and check emails and do daily things then you really don't need to spend more than 650 dollars to get something that would work really well. You really start saving money when the price of parts goes near the $1000 mark, where companies usually charge around 200 bucks for putting it together.
My advice, look at some premade desktops from Dell or IBM and try to find something in your price range.
