hey guys,

i just started using this laptop in my room, its about 3 or 4 years old, its a pentium 4 and has windows xp, i do not want to reformat it but i would love if it was just a little bit faster, any ideas or things i can get to make it run much faster?

crank up the virtual memory maybe, get some more RAM, it depends on the kind of faster you're talking really...

another thing. maybe your cpu is getting bogged down by random processes that you're unaware of. hit control+alt+delete and open the task manager, and then click the (processes) tab. anything thats labelled 'system' or 'network' don't touch. anything that's under 'owner' or your computer name or login or something like that, you can terminate, but only terminate the ones that you have no idea what they are, and the ones that are using lots of memory. if you're unsure, copy paste em all here and i'll tell you what you do/don't need.

god damnit i hate spyware, i just hit ctrl+alt+del and was looking through my processes and there were a couple called like freecash and findnow. Since i hit end process will that do anything or are they still gonna be bogging down my comp??

spool32 or something is another common one... and there's one that's like ccApp or something. get rid of both of those.

and yeah, i'd advise you to get adaware se, spyware doctor, maybe zone alarm if you're not being a router (or other firewall). they're pretty efficient programs. another problem is your registry getting infected, so download some sort of registry cleaner. the first time i ran that scan, i had 1400 threats/risks or whatever they're called. it's pretty insane.

honestly, that is your best bet. im still indiffernet as far as mac vs. pc goes, and even though i have been using OSx for a little bit now, i still dont mind using windoz, but osx wont degrade like windows will.

i just did that and then i have a lot of them in my name, so googled it and it was some crap, so i deleted it so now im going to download spyware or whatever and register also, casue the last the last 2 times, like 5 toolbars was installed in my computer, stupid fuckers

not really expensive, but because you're on a laptop it might be a little bit harder to add more ram and stuff

 
if you want to buy anything computer related, i advise you search ebay. always sick deals to be had. everything computer or automobile related is some damn expensive in this world, so you gotta find the deals. haha, example, i play a flight simulator game on my computer and my dad bought this insane joystick ($200.00) value for 4 dollars and 50 cents. i heart ebay.

having music and porn on your hard drive wont slow a comp down. its the spyware that comeswith it. like said above, when your processor has to multitask, it cant run a single program as fast. you cannot get a new bios. your bios is built into your mainboard. check to see what kind of ram you need before going down to the shop. if its a few years old, its probably ddr, but maybe sdram. never shut a computer down without doing it properly. that will slow a comp way down. when your comp writes information on a hd, it writes it all simultaneously, so it doesnt have to look for it. but when you shut your computer down, it writes it wherever the hell the hd is at when you shut it off, and therefore, instead of having to spin once to find info, has to spin many times to gather all the info.
