Computer monitor(s)

Right now i have my laptop running a normal compute monitor and I just close my laptop and have a USB keyboard and mouse. I recently came across two identical dell 19" monitors and I was wondering if it is possible to run them both side by side. I have a decent radeon video card and it can run the lap top and the external monitor at the same time but is there a way to run two external monitors? There is only one monitor plug in on the back of the computer.

Not sure where to post this but I figured it would get lost in the stream of BS flowing out of NSG.

short answer, yes, you can run what you want across two screens. long answer...ask nomensteven or freskier1620, as im far to lazy to explain what you need to do to make your widescreen dreams come true.

You can run as many monitors as you want as long as your video card can handle it. You'll need to have a DVI output and a VGA output on your laptop. Most laptops don't have both. If you have both then you just need to buy an adapter from DVI to VGA or vice versa depending on what kind of plug the monitors have. Then just run ATI catalyst and set it up.

My computer has both outputs. So you are saying that all I need is an adapter and I can run two external monitors. Right now I have the computer running one external off the VGA port. So will the computer just know when I hook up another monitor?

Also I did some research and found this box thing that allows you to run multiple monitors but it is expensive. If so I guess I will just buy that adapter and see if that works.

Thanks.

Yup, buy a DVI to VGA adapter. Then just run the ATI software and setup your monitors however you'd like them.

You need to buy one of those adapters that is connected to the computer monitor (not sure the exact computer lingo). But that has to have a splitter on it..so it splits into 2..so hypathetically speaking you could have 3 monitors with a laptop!

So just to clarify, I will close my laptop and have two completly indenpendant monitors running. One from the VGA port and one from the DVI to VGA conversion port?

Thanks for your help anyone that commented I will keep you updated.

Right now I have two dell 17" big ass boxy monitors. If anyone knows of a good deal for two flat panel monitors hit this thread up.

so you get one of those cords that attaches to the blue thing..but the cord has to have 2 of those coming off of it..that way you can attach the DUAL monitors into that!

stop acting like you know what you are talking about. If I simply had a splitter the monitors would display the same image. Not what I want. They sell these little boxes that allow you to have a dual display but they are hundreds of dollars.

you want a converter that will go DVI to VGA...like this: http://sewelldirect.com/DVIAMTOVGAF.asp

after you have the 2 monitors plugged in, it's just a matter of using your video card's app to set it up. shouldn't be too hard.
