Comp kids make me feel shit at skiing

I'll see some little ass kids do some crazy shit. if only I had access to an airbag, tramps, pool, coaching, nice parks, and balls. also why tf do they all have pivot 18s and weigh 130.

Jake carney made the greatest park edit of all time without a spin over 720 and now he's on Rossignol. Andy parry made a career out of wizard tricks. Just stay in your lane and focus on YOUR strengths and you will eventually be satisfied with your skiing. There are comp jocks who will do a triple and you can tell its not what they should be doing, and there are street skiers who should be in the backcountry, but the names you remember and the skiing you love to watch is the people who found their strengths and honed in on them.

Its all fun and games till you need to move out and pay bills

Comp kids view skiing as their whole life. Not saying that others here don't, but there's a difference between skiing smart and skiing like a comp kid IMO. I personally do a ton of other things like photography and hiking that I enjoy where making myself more prone to injuries skiing just isn't smart. This can be anything from spotting a landing, making a decision based on snow conditions, or realizing your comfort zone, however skiing becomes interesting when you're constantly progressing and I'm not saying that there wont be injuries. Ill still jump stuff, crash and burn, but there's a difference between hitting a 15 plus footer on hardpack vs deep pow...Would only do that stuff in pow. Thats just how I can view the best longevity to any ski season. Injuries are just an aspect of the sport here an there, but it doesn't hurt to be smart about the decisions you make.

I swear comp skiers live rent free in some peoples heads. Who the hell cares? "Waaaa they have airbags and tramps and and and" Go whine about privilege somewhere else.

Just focus on your own skiing and eventually you’ll come to love it. It’s not about how much you can spin or flip, all about control, speed, and style. Watch some stuff from 2008-2012 and it will inspire you by how little comparatively people spin yet how big they go and how clean they look, lot less structured coaching and assistance to get good back then.

Comp skiing and regular park skiing are so different its sort of like its 2 separate sports. The tricks and objective are totally different.

I love comp skiing tho, you will too as long as you recognize its different than what were doing. Massive respect for doing those gnarly tricks. Also the fact that when a comp rider gets off the 50 foot jumps and slopestlye features they can do what we do but 10x better. No reason to be jealous tho because its not about the skill level in our type of riding, its about doing it different and creating sick content. Most of the best edits of all time come from dudes like us. Look at the ON3P vids. I mean ya some of the dudes are former comp riders but you know what im sayin.

People don’t dislike comp riders, they are just jealous they don’t have the opportunities to travel the country and get a shit ton of training. The resort I grew up at, we didn’t get a tube until 2022 and I started riding in 2014. Trust me, I know how it feels to not stand a chance, but respectfully guys, get a pair of nuts and get over it.

i heard something recently that made me laugh- 'you're rich if you make more than your wife's sister's husband'

i think the same can be said for skiing - you're good if you are better than your girlfriend's sister's boyfriend

then again, this is NS and i'm not sure anyone here actually has a girlfriend

It's all in your perspective dude! As someone already mentioned - it starts with not comparing yourself to someone else! To be 100% with you and to add some "old head" advice, this applies to everything in life and not just skiing. Skiing, relationships, careers....everything. Comparison will stunt your own personal growth, allow for you to not focus on your originality or "self", and ultimately hinder your goals. You gotta just do you! Just enjoy the show and then just go ski and have some fun.

PART 2***

This is directed to the few who are already on the COMP SKIER HATE posts in this thread...

Wtf? Why hate...they love this shit too just like all of us. To be honest, probably more than most, they just have a different experience than most of us can or do. Think about it, not a single one of us, in a million years would say "Nah, I'm Good..." if given the opportunity to be able to ski at their level - style or no style.

Lastly...hating on people who are better than you makes you look lame. Just saying.

Gonna throw out some rhetoric that might change your mind:

1) Everyone started somewhere, and most people that aren't insecure about their skiing will be hyped to see you in the park trying to progress. At some point or another we were all little gremlins 50-50'ing boxes and straight airing jumps, even those comp skiers you watch on the big screen. Just focus on progressing, if you can learn basics like doing a 360 or grinding a rail then you're already better than half of all skiers.

2) Yeah it would be cool if you had access to airbag, tramps, pool, coaching, and nice parks. But you don't, those people do because they spend tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to persue comp skiing. You know what you don't need those things to do? Be a local legend, be the guy at your hill that inspires the next generations of you's to pick up park skiing. You don't need all that stuff to be a sick ass skier.

3) Why do you want to be a comp skier? Be honest. Not many of them make a lot of money, or any for that matter. It's a lot of hardwork, long ass days of off hill training, skiing, and film review. I've skied in USSA competitions before, it's honestly way more fun to just go ski with your friends and not have to worry about training, planning runs, and scoring well enough to move on. Comp skiing is very rewarding and a blast, but equally challenging and frustrating at the same time. Enjoy skiing, you don't need to make a career out of it.

4) And this one is the corniest of all: you're probably great at other stuff. Seriously, so what the kids at your hill can dub or hit crazy rail combos, they probably suck at a lot of other stuff. I ski with people who are awful skiers and snowboarders, but they're incredible artists, skateboarders, cooks, or photographers. There is more to life than skiing, believe it or not. Yes skiing is awesome, and it's clearly most of our passions here, but there isn't even snow for half the godamn year. Appreciate your other skills.

Anyway's I'm stoned and sleepy, and it's past my bedtime. So there's my 2 cents, take it or leave it.

Yeah man, just ask Kelly Sildaru. Don't blame the kids, blame the piece of shit racer parents who found another Olympic sport to force their kids into.

Preach patty!

all very good points. Thought I might add another as a former coach. I used to have the sickest group of athletes at northstar 10+ years ago. Total Gs who are all now like 25-27 years old. You know how many of them are still skiing regularly? Basically zero. That shit is hard on your body and at some point you might want to pursue other things in life besides chasing tricks on your skis. So being a bit more conservative and slow in your progression is a totally reasonable thing to do. I didn’t even go upside down until I was 21 and then I knocked that shit off about ten years after when the rush wore off. I still have an amazing time in the park. In the last two winters I’ve learned probably 5 new rail tricks or combos, so you can still find new ways to have fun without being the best on the mountain.

also, when I see someone do something sick, I go up to them and give em a fist bump they’re usually so stoked you noticed and appreciated it. So maybe go up to that comp kid and tell him how deep he sent that last hit. Who knows, he could be your new best friend
