Community college any fun?

soo yeah im an average kid, graduating from a mad shitty high school and i either have two choiced. I can either spend alota money for the 4 years and go out west to a decent college (i live in the east, and im gona be trying to get my bachelors) or i can stay in the east for the first two years and then go out west to a better college to graduate, wich is my more prob choic since i have like no money and my parents will be paying for like more than half my tuition. Soo a few of my nigs in college told me that community college is really boring and theres like no partys ior anything and its really hard to meet people. Now, there living at there parets house, not on campus but they made it sound like there let down by not having any fun. So ns if i dont live on campus will community college deprive me of a fun, educational experience?

go to community college in the west, take general courses, make friends with homies that go to the real schools, become an in state resident, transfer to real school and pay in state tuition, win

I'm doing freshman courses at community college because I don't see any point in paying lots of money for core classes. The party scene isn't like a big expensive college for obvious reasons, but you'll be saving a shit ton of money by taking cheap BS classes then switching to a nice school once you're going to study something that's actually applicable.

this. im one semester from being done with my associates. ill graduate DEBT FREE. and have 2 years of college out of the way when i transfer..

my CC may be somewhat of an anomaly but a fair amount of my instructors hold PHDs, they just like teaching in such a culturally and age diverse environment. (along with smaller class sizes, my biggest class has been just over 100 students)

Im in living out one of your options right now.
In the east going to community college. Its not bad because its super cheap. Easy. you can get general classes and alot of credits for cheap and out of the way. You can make your own schedule to easily revolve around skiing. I ski 5 days of the week.
I was thinking about going out west but for the sake of distance and money I may just go up to Vermont or NH

Oh and its not fun.unless you know people already at the college.I know no one at mine, i went to a private HS out of state. So i have like 3 or 4 friends there thats it. Its not the same as a 'real' college.

everyone seems to like your post so i will play devils advocate...

going to a community college in the west is dumb as shit. one of the dumbest things you can do.

why?

because youre paying out of state tuition for a god damn community school haha.

take a year or two off and go to the west. not school just go out and make it work for a few years while you get residency - then go to a REAL school like he said. the community part just doesnt make sense financially.

im going to have to agree with you on this one.

the whole point of community college is so that its cheap, so y pay more to get the same stuff

community college in the mountains can be fucking rad... Truckee CC, and SLT CC here in Tahoe are off the hook, because you can set your classes up in a way that you can ski all the time.

However, community college not in the mountians? BLOWS ASS. especially the one i'm going to right now. Fucking every asian (and I mean that literally - like theyre not from the USA, asian) in the world floods the school because it's a direct feeder to Berkeley, LA, Davis, and other UC's... I hate it because I cant get my classes i need - too many fuckers from china cloggin up what i pay taxes on in order to GET the classes i want.

I do not tolerate college BS very well haha.

i went to a community college. no partys and shit but you learn mad shit. way better classes than public schools.

Not necessarily. In Washington, out of state tuition costs $200 a class. Instate is $90 if I remember correctly?

The point is, even with out-of-state tuition, it's still cheap as hell. $2,300 for 15 credits? Very yes!

taking 5 classes at salt lake community out of state comes to a grand total of a bit over $1500. in state at any "REAL" school will cost far more then that. in any type of situation it is far more intelligent to take your bullshit freshman classes at a cc. it makes complete sense financially if it transfers over, unless you're living in your parents basement and not paying rent. also, i've taken a year off and worked minimum wage jobs trying to balance rent payments and car insurance payments and what not. its the fucking worst. besides on a personal level for me, living in salt lake sure as hell beats living in connecticut. to the OP don't sit around at home bored to death in your hometown, get out and experience something new, worlds your oyster buddy.

If you live in the east, why would you move out west? there are better schools in the east by far. Pending what you wanna do, look for look at the curriculum before you make a jump and move out west. I went to a school in MI that has the best business school in the state and other went and paided more for a school that isnt ranked as high.

you will get better experiences at an university but if your worried about money, go to a community college. you can always transfer if you get good enough grades, if you dont get good grades, no university will touch you.

Once you get your degree, it will make moving alot easier. Besides out of state is almost double in state. My friends from chicago were paying more than double for the same education.

if your going to college for a fun time. likey your flunk out.. im taking classes so i can get into this emt parmedic program that i am interested in.. but for sure there are alot of good resorces and stepping stones to help one out to get closer to their goal.!

looking back i probably would have done this for the first year or even two years of school and then transferred to the school of my choice like i ended up doing anyway. would have saved some money for sure

The friends I have at community college like it as they don't have to pay as much money, but I hear that the social aspect really declines.

I'm not going to a community college for several reasons.

-my grades are very good and I can't waste it on a cc.

-I want to join a frat and last time I checked cc don't offer those.

-I want to become a doctor and I don't know of any programs that go cc->core college->medical unviersity haha

And furthermore I just don't like the idea of community colleges. For the people that can't afford regular colleges, there is plenty of financial aid out there. I've seen people from the poorest of families go to some very nice colleges of the highest order.

The only reason I really don't like community colleges is become from my standpoint, kids who often fuck around in high school and don't do shit get to find a way around that and still get the same diploma that some could that didn't screw around in high school. DON'T GET ME WRONG there is people that go there for the right reasons but from my experience, this is the majority of people.

your parents are paying your way huh frat boy?

for some of us, our rents make anough that we cant get financial aid, but not enough to send us to school.

anddd, cc-college-med school

what you do in cc is your first 2 years of university.

only, its a couple grand a year instead of 10.

i took my senior ear of highschool at a CC this year. the class sizes are super small, the professros are all great and super chill and willing to help, the courses are easy as fuck.

but it truly is boring as fuck. there are no parties. there is no school spirit or sports teams or shit like that people get all hyped over. i dont know how to explain it, its like the place has no soul.

An associates isnt the same as a bachelors. Besides there are programs that many large universities dont offer that community colleges do. Also many CC have professors who actually work in the field people are interested. I went to an university for 4.5 years, graduated with my bachelors but have taken a few(more than 3, less than 6) classes at a local CC while I worked over the summer. Every teacher I had was either retired from the field I am interested in or currently working in the field. There were some at the university but I found there were more at the CC, who have the same credentials.

Besides not everyone is naturally gifted at school, so why punish those who arent. CC are a good way to earn credits very cheaply and gives thoses a second chance to excel. Also they are a good way to earn other degree that go along with your field for people who arent interested in going for there masters due to money or time. Not everyone want to be paying off financial aid for the next decade, besides what if you take time off from school, you still have to pay back your loans or interest will kill you.

WHy do you wanna join a frat? They wont help you get into medical school, unless you join a specialty one and those ones arent the fun ones. The board at your medical school review will prob look it as a negative unless you have a 4.0, which is very difficult to get. My cousin had a 3.97 and her BF had a 4.0 (in physics) at U of M which is one of the top end state schools in the country. You dont have to much time for that kind of stuff, ie partying and pledging. Since then she has gotten 3 masters from the university of Chicago in English(one of the best graduate schools in the country) while working and teaching 2-3 days a wk. She currently is working on her DR (12 credits) while working 40+ hrs per wk and teaching 2 classes. If your serious about becoming a doctor, you better volunteer at a hospital in your free time when your not studying. My mom and brother work at one of the best private hospitals(Crittenton) in MI and they see the potential Dr. there and hear what it takes to be one, Its rough shit.

Not to be mean to you dude, but alot of my friends have went or go to CC and school is the toughest things for them. With out CC, they would be construction workers or worse. I respect them alot for continuing there education even though it is difficult for them.

There is no reason to pay $20,000 for classes you could be taking for $2,000. Core classes are core classes are core classes - its all the same. If you're going to college so you can play dress-up with a bunch of frat boys and waste money so you can live in some resort village, then you are going to school for the wrong reasons.

If you think the aptitude of your classmates determines the quality of education, then you have a lot to learn. Having fun paying off loans just so you can feel smarter by association.

i am at what is pretty similar to a community college in ontario.

we get some pretty stupid people in here, so when theres decent parties shit usually goes down hard.

i almost wish the drinking age was 21 in ontario so there would be more house parties and less going to clubs.

Dude, i seriously have had classes where 70% of the class is speaking mandarin...

I'm straight up enthralled bout this situation... i cant even get a tutor for math or science who speaks without an accent from some random ass asian country...

Oh, and dont even get me started on the teachers. I havent had a teacher from the USA for math since probably 8th grade. And the last time i had one who was from an english speaking country that wasn't hong kong? freshman year of high school...

My current math teacher's russian... and makes math feel like the gulag, no fucking joke... oh, and dont ask her any questions... she'll just tell you that you should have learned it in the last math class you were in... such bullshit.

No, I am held captive by this situation, because I cant get a job to afford rent in order to move closer to a less impacted college... and I cannot afford out of state fees at other schools. I just didnt go into detail about that part I guess.

Enraged though? True as balls.

youre totally right, god forbid someone come to 'merica and try and make a living. come on how could you seriously make a post like this.

It could be fun. Get your own place or live on campus if they have that. Its def worth living in the dorms even though they are small, you learn alot about yourself and meet people.

I have no problem with foreigners... or hiring them. I'm just wondering where all the American math professors are? You know.. in America? Because it's odd that I cant find more than 6 at my college (math dept has something like 23 or 24 teachers). Just saying...

Also, I'm frustrated, and sure, maybe i'm blaming it partially on them, and not fully my incompetence at math, but who's not to say I wouldn't do better if I could understand my professor in a subject I dont understand to begin with?

anyways. back to the Community college thread. Go to one in a sweet location, and you'll probably have a cool time - harder to make and keep friends though, since you dont live on campus, and people are constantly transferring in or out, but that could be true of anywhere, really.

im going to Dutchess Community for a year if anyone is around there. I applied to an art school and got denied. they told me to do CC for a year, get my grades up, then re apply. so thats what I shall do. Two of my friends are staying local too and bunking at home still so Ill have people to chill with on the weekends hopefully

i'm going to a CC, technically. it's the aviation part of the college and has the best air traffic control program in the nation but it's still at a CC. i have a feeling it's going to be a boring 15 months, but at least i'll learn something. and weekends i can come home and go to some real colleges lol. it'll be worth it in the long run i hope.

I go to RCTC (rochester community technical college) in minnesota and it is pretty legit, reason being a lot of people actually move down to roch and live in apartments it has a big enrollment i think the freshmen class this year was just over 4000, its basically like a uni.

Community college is a great way to get your generals out of the way and come out with a 2 year degree. The general courses at a CC are the exact same as any UNI for wayyy cheaper. I will have a A.S in Mass Comm after next fall and it will be nice, I'll test the job market for a while and if I get in that will be great, if not i'll go back to school.

Plus if you think about it, if you go to a CC and realize school isn't for you, you saved so much money...if you go to a 4 year and realize its not for you...well that blows.

Ok dude, uncle Steve here to educate you...

Yes, living in the dorms is a awesome experience.

BUT, all those kids at Chico State that are partying their asses off in Chico, do you think the kids at Butte CC have any less fun partying in Chico? Or what about kids at UCSB that are partying in Isla Vista, do you think kids at SBCC are having less fun partying in Isla Vista?

Or what about the kids at the CC in Town Of Mammoth Lakes, who dont have a party town but are skiing their asses off at Mammoth Mountain and fishing in the summer?

If you pick a top 10 school, such as UCLA, you can contact them and find out what schools they have a transfer agreement with. Go to one of these schools, get a MEASLY 3.0 , and you will be accepted to UCLA. Silly College is like a high school class. If you cant get at least a 3.0 you shouldn't be in college.

You are right, going to a CC at out of state tuition costs is not smart. But I have graduated from a top tier UC school, plus take CC clases (in high school) and gotten a MS from a state school.

Except for the experience of living in the dorms, what good is getting your core classes from a university instead of a CC?? My parents paid for it, so sure I enjoyed the "College LIfe". But if I had to pay for it, I would of gotten my core classes from SBCC, partied in Isla Vista, and then transferred to UCSB. Core classes arent even taught by Proffesors in many instances, but upper division classes are.

As a undergrad, you will be in a class in a audtiorium, with either a prof or a graduate student. Lower division classes are the SUCK!

AshytoClassy made a good point about CC clases costing a arm and a leg if you are out of state, but I would like him to explain how wasting your money on lower division classes at a university is a good deal when the classes will have several hundred people, and chances are it will be taught by a graduate student instead of a professor. Professors mainly teach upper division and ESPECIALLY *GRADUATE* classes

Community college blows man, believe me I'm in it right now. I mean, I still go to lots of fat parties and make lots of friends and shit there, but its because I go to community college like 5 minutes from my house with a bunch of people i went to high school with, so its like high school 2.0.
The classes are way easy though. Its obviously the better choice because of the price of college, but it won't be the most fun.
