yeah....i just feel like i need to point out how sick Common is. His lyrics are just so meaningful and they're about real things that matter. opinions?

obviously someone will call out Talib Kweli is just as sick, but either way...whatcha think?
 
i definitley feel like rappers who rhyme about shit that matters, especially to black culture don't get near enough credit. I mean i'm white but i can still appreciate how talented and important common and kweli and all these guys are for bringing issues to the table. chamillionaire's ridin' is all about racial profiling and that's obviously a big deal for minorities but if more people and more attention was given to common maybe these issues would make some progress.

after all, in chamillionaire's acceptance speech he even said that he had an interview with ABC/CNN/whoever it was that was going to be all about racial profiling in reference to his song. they ended up cancelling it but still, at least he came close to getting a big issue major exposure.
 
definately check out immortal technique, hes latin. he raps about problems with black/latin americans, and is overall sick.
 
immortal tech is really good don't get me wrong, i just think his shit gets a little repetetive after a while, but he is still extremely tallented and its well worht picking up revolutionary vol 1 and 2
 
i saw both Common and Talib in concert... and Common was by far a better preformer... like way way better. it was so much fun. Then they both came out and did some blackstar tracks with Hi-Tek instead of Mos-Def.
 
Actually this statement is one of the most true in the thread thus far. Common is decent at best. And anyone who calls him a "lyrical genius" obviously needs to listen to some more hip hop.
 
I still think MJK writes the best lyrics right now. Not only are they (usually) about important or meaningful topics, but you also have to really think in order to understand them.
 
compare common to most main stream hip hop. a better statement may have been that common is a lyrical genius in comparison to most other hip hop artists who have made it big enough to be considered main stream.

for example, common is a lyrical genius when compared to artists such as yung joc. It takes little to no intelligence to write lyrics about being in the club and making up stupid ass dances to go along with your video. Meanwhile common is able to display women in a respectful way and to highlight their beauty in the "go" video while also writing lyrics which are clever and very intelligent.

to underground rappers, maybe common is only decent in your opinion...and i respect that but think about how he is pretty mainstream among a sea of "in the club, cris drinkin, surrounded by hoes and bitches" other rappers. gives him some credibility ya know?
 
1,2,3...mos def and talib kweli.

listen to more hip-hop and you'll soon realize that there are A LOT more aritsts with enormous lyrical talent. i'm not saying you're wrong about common, but there are tons of other artists constantly making a name for themself.
