Commodification of Our sport

Yo, so I found this song and the associated spiel about how big companies penetrate skate culture when they see there's money to be made. Nike's one of the biggest culprits. The song is pretty self explanatory. I dont think skating needs these companies exploiting it. Luckily there are smaller companies like chocolate and girl still making skateboards for skateboarders by skateboarders.

But relating this to our sport. You can see it happening big time, for example Mcdonalds and the fucken US Navy have been sponsoring events. I personally dont think this is cool. I love the fact that our sport is driven by passionate skiers starting all sorts of small companies for skiers, by skiers. Lets keep it that way. Don't you think it makes for a more authentic, passionate, quality driven industry rather than a mass produced quantitative driven industry. I just dont want to see skiing sucked down the same drain as many other sports. Keep it real.

What do you think?

I think it makes for a more unemployed industry in the long run.

But ya this thread is 7 years too late.

i hope you don't like those events, because frankly, they won't happen without those big companies sponsoring them. it really doesn't affect you as a skier at all so don't worry about it...our sport isn't "selling out" until tom is in some macdo's commercial munchin a big mac claiming he eats one every day after skiing on a commercial.

There's a difference between selling out sth. and letting sth. be sold out. If YOU don't let big companies push you too strong into a certain direction and if YOU decide where to progress, then you can't be really exploited.

Sorry for my English, hope y'all understand it. ^^

exactly, but more like 13 years late.

our sport--newschool skiing--was only un-commodified for a few years when people were bending their tails into twintips or making their own 'solution' attachable tails (anyone remember those? griffin cummings and the rest of eric pollard's mentors produced them).

those were the best of times and the worst of times. skiers were barely allowed into terrain parks, and landing switch on conventional skis (which at the time were 60 mm wide and mounted way the fuck back) wasn't really possible. the sport was seriously handicapped.

this thread would be great if not for the following:

- Atomic/Salomon owned by Amer Sports

- founded in the 1950s as a tobacco company

- K2/Line/Full Tilt/Marker/Volkl owned by Jardin Home Brands

- owners of tons of household products

- Nike 6.0

- do I really need to say it?

- Oakley owned by Luxotica eyewear

- world's largest eyewear manufacturer

at the end of the day, the big important players are owned by some big corporate giant. this means more money in the industry for product development meaning you have more fun!

oh yeah, add newschoolers.com being owned by Sportsnet

I think the big companies are progressing the sport more than the smaller companies. For example, look at K2 and the Hellbent.
