Commercializing the Moon

On Monday (8 Jan 2024), United Launch Alliance and Astrobotic will send the first private mission to hopefully land on the moon. Among scientific instruments, cameras, there are human ashes and other DNA samples to be deposited on the surface. This is all commanded and paid for by private companies and customers.

The Navajo Nation has objected to this, as "the moon holds a sacred position in many Indigenous cultures, including ours." There have been plenty of other concerns regarding the ethical commercialization of space, such as the harvesting of resources and even advertisement.

What do you guys think about commercializing the Moon? Should it be treated something like a national park? Public land? Should people be able to make stakes in plots of lunar land? How long until Vail Resorts makes Mt Artemis, "Ski the Lunar Ice!"

Native Americans have a right to the lands that were taken from them but LOL the fucking moon?!?

I'm indifferent about the whole thing as long as it doesn't create problems. Space is a frontier and nothing more.

Realistically we're trending towards an altered carbon type of scenario with singular individuals and corporations becoming more powerful than nations. The moon will be commercialized and there will be nothing we can do about it

I feel the same way. The move "Look Up" is a good glimpse into our world of our Grandchildren

as everyone knows the moon is quite literally made of cheese and not capitalizing on luna's massive underground cheese deposit would be a foolish idea to pass up this opportunity in today's cheese dependent world

Little known fact: the Association of American Dairy Farmers successfully lobbied to reduce NASA's budget and end lunar missions in the 1970s. They were worried that increased space travel could destabilize cheese prices and put them out of business

I say we just get rid of the moon now before it's too late. I mean fuck, low tide is annoying as shit, like the fuck do you mean it's shallower now than it usually is?????? Fuck that shit. Giant moon billboard would only make it worse tbh.

rather than dive into conspiracy theory like i destroy FB with...

i present thee with some fun facts... QandA with a genius!

distance to moon from earth...238,900 miles!

can you name the first monkey to breach the van allen belts and return home safely? ...Bueller...?

how far away is the international space station? 254 miles...

imo, if we are to clean up or advance the way we use and produce energy, then the moon remains as a pandoras box in terms of reducing our impact on the climate. The moon contains high levels of helium 3 which is a vital source for proposed nuclear fusion power plants. Going nuclear if done correctly is better than any other source of energy. Even though Americans have been to the moon on multiple occasions(apollo 11-17 excluding 13 and before 11) it still remains uncharted territory to the most part. If anything id much rather move mining and other destructive forces to other moons and planets to keep our home as safe as possible. Space expansion also furthers the human race.
