As you all know, skateboarding was basically taken over and then comercialized/sold out, by the 'GREAT' tony hawk.. Now we stand at the threshhold of popluarization of OUR sport. Johnny Moseley, as we all know is a total sell out and is popularity oriented. If we allow him to take our sport and sell it to the world because of his greed for money and fame, we will become more like the skateboarders than I believe anyone could want to be. Popularized untill everyon ein the world thinks, they too, are skiers. Luckily the twin boot/board industries are still the 'un-popular' thing to do. In-line skating, twin tipping.. Borad sports still rule the extreme sports world. I just want everyone to think about where our sport would go if we started WANTING our sport to be THAT acknowledged...

Thats not moselys angle, where do you get your news from? Mosely got paid pretty well after his win at the olympics, and he admitted that he craved the attention, but he never intended to sell out our sport. Look at the boarder who won olympic pipe gold, hes getting paid damn well, hell merely competing in the olympics was called selling out 4yrs ago. What Im trying to say is thats part of winning in the olympics, you get money, lots of money. Mosely is just trying to get more ppl to ski, hes not trying to make incredible amounts of money at the price of our sport. After the olympics he chose to go off and do newschool shit, he does what he loves, he chose to do what he loves, what we all love. I can go on for several pages on this topic but Im tired and I should start studying, but mosely is definitely NOT selling out our sport.

i really dont want skiing to end up like skateboarding. having every 10 year old in the world trying to do what we do just isnt my cup of cheese.

just by going by the title 'Comercializing Twin boarding', I would say that it has already happened. you see adds in the mags you read. therefore it has become comercialized. All of the movies and skiers are sponsered. It is commercialized, its just not popular to the masses.

I know what you mean 1080.. That's a good thing.. The problem with people like Moseley is. HE want's the whole world to believe that he is the inventor ((for lack of a better word)) of twin tip skiing, the lord of freestyle, and because he sets himself up and mr. awesome, and already having exposer to the whole world.. Our sport with a little help from him..Could be poularized to the masses.. Luckily I am only venting about this because I thought it would be a good topic for discussion.. Luckily 'board-sports' at least single board sports will always be the main stream and have 100 billion 10 year old posers running around the country poisoning their sport.. We aint gotta worry

 
I agree with toe and frost. i hate when i see little kids in the park talkin big because theyre on the 'freestyle' team. ive known alotta ppl on the 'freestyle' team. u can get on it as long as u have the $. so then u see little kids go hit tables and slowly screw up the whole terrain park 'going huge'. if skiing becomes like skateboarding im gonna b an asshole to every kid who thinks he/she is the next moseley or hall or whatever.

 
whats so bad about kids skiing, evan if there in it for the wrong reasons.. they will figure it out, why dont we worry about are selfs and do what we love to do SKI...

WE NEED to sell out as a sport. We are running out of money to keep things going as they are. The athlets are doing alright but they are a small part of who needs that money. The ski companies (esp line, Being the only true Freestyle company), video companies (PBP, L1P, not MSP and TGR as there market is much greater). Everyone gets streched year after year to make ends meet.

I also am going to be stoked the day I see more little skiers picking up some twins and hitting the part then I see snowboarders. To all of you who want our sport to stay 'Hardcore' or whatever you want to call it. I'm sorry but it isn't going to be that way ever again (just look back to 2-3 years ago now).

When did Moseley ever say 'I invented newschool.' You can be a Moseley hater, but people just assume so much about him.

Anyway who the hell cares if the sport sells out. I've been skateboarding for a long time, and a bunch of little annoying kids at the park don't keep me from loving it or having a good time, it doesn't piss me off either. You've got issues if you're bothered what 10 year old kids do recreationally.

 
I dont really like mosely that much, very cocky and egotistical, but I have a lot of respect for him. I never heard him claim that he 'invented newschool,' but he sure as hell helped. Really, how many of you thought newschool was cool after mosely pulled a mute 3 in the olympics? Sure many people, myself included, have been doing 'newschool' stuff before '98, but as a whole the sport got popular because of mosely.

...as per skiing turning into skateboarding, thats pretty cool because we will get more money/better products/more sponsorships/etc. I dont like to see a train of 30 little 'posers' but they wouldnt think of hitting the terrain I do, and if they do they will either get wrecked or learn something and become better. Look at snowboarding, how many of those kids cant even grab on a 10' table?

does it matter if the sport becomes popular? Are you going to like it less just because more people are doing it? No matter how many people pick it up you will always be able to tell the difference between posers and people who are doing it cause they like it not cause its the cool thing to do.

what the hell is wrong with skateboarding now? i think it's awesome little kids want to learn to skateboard. it's a sport that takes a lot of practice, is difficult, and isn't about beating someone else. it's about trying to get better because you want to. i'd love to see just as many kids skateboarding, BMXing or whatever as playing little league.

If by sold out/commercialized you mean people give respect to skateboarders instead of thinking that all of them are loser highschool dropouts, then i say there's nothing wrong with that.

 
dude honestly you are retarded... if tony hawk didn't 'sell out' which he didnt, then someone else would have. you say he sold out by taking sponsors, and EARNING money. he worked his ass off to become what he has become, and even if he's not the best skater in the world, he's probably the smartes.. it would be straight up stupid to not take a multimillionaire contract in order to have the sport less popular.it's the same with skiing... think about it, if you ever became a pro (as if that would happen) you would want as many people as possible skiing, no matter young or old, and you would want them buying your ski, and any other product with your name on it so you get money... clearly they want money... you kinda need it to live, so try thinking before you go off being a little biaaaa.

Frost omeslice, do you like this sport...well if you want it around for a while. Unfortunately it needs to go mainstreem, thus money will be put into freeskiing. I always get annoyed when people say that someone has sold out yada yada yada, unfortunately you aren't them. I kno alot of people that feel this same way as I, about sports you just named. So unless its going to be you and and your cult posse of super core riders that 'Didnt' sell out having a good time by yourselvles with a sport with no money, then hey by all means do it. And especially if you want really anything todo with this industry in the future you better bet your bottom buck that alot of money needs to be put in to it so that money will be made. Yah something like that.

I'm with Big Willy on this one.

I can't see a problem with an increase in the skiing population. From what I can gather from alot of the other responses being posted on this site, we should be skiing for ourselves. Who cares if 10,000 more 10 year olds take up 'new school' skiing. Those that like it will stick with it, and hopefully, as it grows more popular, there will be more events and greater prizemoney allocated for them. At worst it would provide a higher level of competition. How could this possibly be a bad thing. Those kids that took up newschool skiing because everyone else did, will grow tired of it and go back to playing Mad Trix on PS2 because they couldn't be bothered putting in the time to learn.

Let Mosely do what he wants without criticising him for 'selling out' . He put in the work to get where he is, now he should be able to reap the benifits.

the part about mosely was off target, but last year there was a commerdial for 'gelly's super smooth crayons' on TV, and in it they had animated bears riding crayons like snowboards. or wait a minute!, what about 'Nickleodeon's rocket power'. i think this is the kind of 'selling-out' and 'comerciallizing' frost wants skiing to stay away from.

I didnt bother reading what everyone else put, but it doenst matter if skiing sells out really. I eman it would be kinda cool if it didnt, but i know that soon it WILL. All that amtetrs is that the originals, us, or at least most of us, still keep the heart and spirit alive within oursleves and on our hills. WE are the ones the kids look up to, almost as much as the pros. Keep it real, and it will stay real.

madd trix - agree with you that it's OK if it gets commercialized, but not because it would be cool in the eyes of others specifically snowboarders and what not. I have never seen a border worth thier wieght or anybody else not give props to somebody who was clearly pushing it. The external stuff has nothing to do with how we choose to ride.

i didn't mean just in the eyes of snowboarders. i mean just people in general who think that skiing is all about racing ans shit like that. one freeskiing becomes commercialized, all of us will recieve more the respect that we deserve.

Yea a note on tony hawk. There are plenty of other skaters out there who you probably think are more on the hardcore side than Hawk, but they're livin it up in money as well, Thomas, Koston, even getz owns a pimped out beamer, a lexus, and some other fancy car. Pros in skating are paid very well, but if we are going to pay football players exorbitant amounts of money, the skill it takes to become a pro skateboarder takes just as much effort, and hard work, and love if not more in some respects. I think they deserve the money... fuck people calling them sellouts.

I think everybody that skis should do so, because they love it, not cause its sumthin different.
