Coloured bases vs black bases

do coloured bases compared to black bases affect how fast they are?

Ofc, the darker the stickier. Except orange and green which are sticky but fast. Black is very quick too. White not so much.

Extruded bases can be black however these are the slowest but the easiest to repair and maintain

Race bases are also black (example on this year's Edollos) and are the fastest however the hardest to maintain

Sintered bases are usually clear with graphics behind them, are the middle ground

RE: sintered bases & race bases- all race bases are sintered. There are just different grades of sintered bases and world cup racing uses the fastest versions.

Now even with race bases, not all of them are black. In our slalom skis for example, we use clear/colored bases because the speeds that slalom skiers are going is not fast enough to warrant using a fully black race base. So, we often make clear/colored bases for slalom because they don't need it. With GS, Super-G, and Downhill you will only see all-black race bases because the speeds they are skiing at necessitate it.

Why is it that race bases are black? Is there a reason the material can't be another color?

Other colours just aren't fast enough

Okay so it does make a difference but only at high speed?

When additives, such as graphite, are used that's the only color that they can be.

Yep. Up to a certain speed you can get away with non-black bases. But over a certain speed, you will want to have the bases with more additives, which are black.

What about those phantom bases or whatever it’s called. The never wax ones. How do those compare? And how are they on rails? Park durability?? Probs a form on it in here somewhere

DPS Phantom 2.0(new version cures faster) is a permanent waxless glide that can be applied to any ski base although you can order DPS skis with it already applied. Unlike wax, it actually empregnates and goes into base so you could get a base grind and it still would glide. Should be good for park use as most park skiers aren’t fussing with hot waxing all the time and Phantom eliminates the need for waxing again.

Reviews seem to be good for it but haven’t tried it myself. It’s $99 per pair of skis to apply so not cheap.

That's cool I never heard of this before I might get it just to save from every waxing again

While I personally don't notice the difference in speed between my skis with a graphic base vs black bases, there is supporting evidence that black bases run at higher temps due to solar radiation absorption. Depending on the time of year and how cold it was, this could make the skis ski faster. I do find I like to ski my black bases more often but that's probably just the ski.
