Hey California regionals. I'm going to Western Washington University right now, and I love it, but I need to get out of Bellingham (been riding Baker for the last 8 years). I'm looking for a university/college near Mammoth preferably, but any sick mountain will do.

Cera Cosa Community College is in Mammoth. I have never been to the campus but a lot of kids go there who move to Mammoth.
 
Yeah I checked it out, looked pretty cool. I was looking for something more academically orientated than a community college (no hate, just need a good degree).
 
SDSU, UCSB, UCLA, USC, Cal Poly, CSULB all have teams that compete in mammoth or just come up here virtually every weekend.

There isn't any university that is actually near by. An option is to take summer and fall semesters and take winter of and live here during the winter. I know 2 girls that have been doing that the last 3 years in Mammoth and are both about to graduate with bio degrees from Central Michigan.
 
How long is the drive?

And I realize taking winter off is an option, I'm just trying to find a ski school in California. Not necessarily Mammoth.

more schools and more ski resorts around Tahoe. UNR- reno sucks but close to Tahoe. Sierra nevada college= my alma- in Tahoe what more can i say. sac, san fran, davis, and berkley are all close to Tahoe. by the way Tahoe is 2-3 hours from mammoth closer than any LA stuff i think.
 
Its like 2 hours from Chico to tahoe. I think Davis is about the same. CSU Sac will be like 20 minutes closer. I guess you should look at the school based on the programs they offer. it depends on what your major is, and what you are looking to gain from your education. Location should be secondary, though it should influence.

I am looking to move up to washington when I finish my MS. I was going to do it earlier but I got the opportunity to continue my research.
 
How tough would it be to transfer to USC?

I'll end up looking it up though if you don't want to answer, and thanks a ton, that helps a lot.
 
Your forgetting UCR and UCI.
UCI is about two hours away from Big Bear. UCR about 40 minutes away.
I'm going to UCR in all probability. I'll be a junior transfer student there.
 
If you want to ski, and go to college, Go to UNR. Period..
Its 2-3 hours from mammoth, a few minutes from tahoe... and if you ever want to drive out to Idaho, Oregon, Utah, or anything else, you're that much closer to those places too...Anything else sucks in comparison...
 
Oh, and there's also Sierra Nevada college. It's super small, but its ON lake Tahoe... and they have NO application fee so you have no reason not to apply. plus, EVERYONE there shreds... its the only college in the country that offers a degree in ski resort management and ski business and all that shit.
 
Not EVERYONE there shreds, and its a private institution so its expensive. However, it does have the best location for any shred school.
 
well, by everyone, I mean a high enough percentage of people that it nearly seems to be everyone.

as for expensive? if you're transferring, it gets dropped down to about the same level as a california state school... (11k scholarship just for applying wtf right?) and I guess on top of that there's tons more grants and other stuff you can get. and by living off campus? housing costs drop by another 2 or 3 G's. So it's pretty good for a Private institution... least compared to the likes of the bigger privates for sure..

All scholarships aside, because "there's tons more grants and other stuff you can get" for other schools too. You can find cheaper living situations and food options, but you still pay $22,768 (12-19 credits) for tuition compared with $6407 (19 credits) at UNR. California state schools with a 32% increase? Maybe they will be at the same level as SNC now.
 
im going to cerro coso college in mammoth and its legit, even though its not as academic as a university, its way cheaper even with the price increase and after you finish your general ed you can transfer to a uni. save you some money
 
Is that 6407 the out of state fee? or the nevada fee? because I remember out of state being like 5 figures... I could definitely be wrong though.

Either way, I suggest either UNR or SNC if they are feesable for suure.
 
Out of state you would add about $6,100. A way to avoid that would be to establish residency, attend TMCC in the meantime, then transfer.
 
Residency's kinda a bitch in Nevada though, so I understand... Which is why I've never really looked into it a whole lot.

Isn't it true you cant take more than half a full term (so like 6 semester units max) at any given time when you're trying to gain residency in NV? Least that's what i remember when I was looking into it last year.

If that's the case, then I guess you'd just have really mellow semesters for about a year...
 
I go to SNC. It is expensive but they give you a fat scholarship, if your not completely retarded. Laz, I'm a second year junior there right now. They've stepped up their game from when you attended. In regards to who shreds... I only know about three people out of the whole school that don't ride/ski. Thats because they got a full ride because they're a minority or whatever. It's a good school. My girlfriend went to University of Washington for her first year of college then came down to go to Tahoe with me. I've asked her if she's glad she made the change and she says "yes definitely". The classes are never bigger than 30 people and they average about 15 in each class. Some teachers are stupid and some are fucken awesome. On a shitty note attendance is required and you can only miss 3 days of class before your grade starts getting screwed. However, its not really a big deal because nobody goes to class on a powder day. They'll usually just cancel class. It's a good school. You learn more simply because you are required to attend, you are graded on homework, not just two tests a year. It sounds lame but the homework isn't hard (usually) and its graded pretty softly. You stay involved in class and are able to actually have a student/teacher relationship.
Obviously I'm biased because I go there but I had to throw in my two cents.
 
So what kinda scholarships are we talking about at SNC? Money wise?....I've thought about doing this but I have it pretty simple out here in Indiana. The rents pay for school while I just live with my dad in a hooge house and hes never around so I got the house alone.....I go to IUPUI and go out to tahoe about 2 times a year. Im thinking about doing a fall 15-18 cr and a summer like 9 cr out here and just shredding out there all winter.

Anybody got room in 2011? Im quite and smart. =)
 
I get an 11 k scholarship for the four years... heres the link to the scholarships http://www.sierranevada.edu/index.php?id=56 I'm not sure how it goes when you don't pop in when your a senior outa high school. Just call up the school, explain them your situation and they'll tell you what scholarship your eligible for. I think you wouldn't be able to get in 9 credits during the summer because enough credits/classes are offered. I'm taking 12 credits this winter and i only have Tues Thurs classes. 5 days a week I get to ski. Also I do ski patrol at Diamond Peak ( a small hill 5 mins from campus)... thats a good gig. You can get credits for taking a class to be qualified for ski patrol.
for the fall, you can do an easy 18 credits. 15 is pretty relaxed.
I'll be there for '11.
 
11k's not bad. But I think im just gona take summer and fall classes out here in Indiana then move out there for the winter.

davis is about an hour and a half from sugar bowl/boreal and maybe one forty five-two hours from alpine/squaw and its a great school. bout to get much more expensive though
