hello...i was wondering if there are any colleges near whistler. im looking for a grad school. thanks!

Unfortunately there aren't really any colleges right near whistler, the closest ones are all in and around Vancouver.

Or fortunately, depending on how you look at it. God knows I'd never get any work done.

You're american, so by college, do you really mean university? We use proper terms for things up here.

If you mean "university", then the answer is "There are two in vancouver. UBC is pretty much its own city and rad, and huge, and kinda unfriendly, and SFU just sucks all around, but might be your only option if they're the only one offering a program of study that is compatible with your interests".

There ya go. Both are 2 hrs away from Whistler. Any closer and you'd fail out and ski all the time, like I, and many others, almost did.

this is true, I don't imagine any of us would accomplish much if there was indeed a University of Whistler, damn we'd have a good time though.

HEY! I go to SFU, and its pritty much awsome all-round. Theres some pritty cool skiers here too. And at AFU you can get a whistler pass for 350.

hey, keep it quiet. i told my parents i transferred to the University of Whistler. your going to ruin my plans...

rossi dude guy...any college/uni in BC can get you a student pass.

the new university in sqamish...about 1 or 2 years... will be great

yea i am american....but here we have university and colloege...i honeslty dont know the difference...i think one is just bigger then the other.

haha, man as far as I'm concerned the University of Whistler does exist, I've been here 5 and a half months and I've learned more than I did in the last 4 years of uni and college. I've been learning better stuff too, for example instead of learning about oh lets say, political science, I'm learning the art of nailing as many tourists as I can.

That deal is offerd by the mountain. Any student can get it, it's pretty sweet. And after you graduate (if you ever do) you can get a gradute pass for like $700. They try and build you slowly up to the real prices.....

The Dave is a mystical man filled with powers beyond belief. He's everything you wish you could be, and then some.

He's also someone who went to SFU last year as a first year student, only to transfer to the "university of Whistler" this year. Give it a year, you'll either transfer too, or be too much of a pussy/slave to societal expectations, but wish you had the balls to move to Whistler, like me!

Go SFU!

hahaha give me year, I'm thinking give me the end of the first semester. The University of Whistler would be sweet,I think I'd wanna major skiing, and take powder 101.

Got to Cap, like Matt said, that's what i do, 3 classes gets me a cheap ass pass, it's as close to whis as you can get school wise, plus it's pretty easy and most classes don't exist on fridays...

The reason I asked if you were a first year student is because your statements betray the fact that your too-good attitude is still fresh out the gate. Had you told me you were anything but a first year student, I would have immediately wrote you off as a complete moron. Only because anybody spending more than a year at SFU, while retaining an attitude so full of sunshine, has to be handicapped.

But it's ok, you're still new, so you're allowed to be positive about SFU. Time will probably teach you otherwise. For now let me leave you with this nugget of wisdom. There are no cool skiers at SFU. There is Simon, (Jib_This) but he hates that place enough for him not to count as a student. Actually, Marcus Schalle is a cool guy, but he barely skis. So when you get down to it, there are no cool skiers. Technically I'm still a registered student, despite the whole academic probation fiasco.

So treasure your cheap pass, observe your surroundings, skip class, breath fresh air, smash your face into a wall as often as possible to stay grounded, punch a different elitist TA in the face every day to keep them grounded, then follow your heart, right on out of that place.

Damn I'm so jaded. Sorry. Don't take all of that at face value, learn your own lessons, because at SFU the only lessons are hard lessons. So at least you'll learn them well. Who knows, you might like it. On sunny mornings be sure to always head up to the roof or top level of wherever you are and take a look at Grouse because the view is spectacular. If you pick your spots right you can actually see skiers on the Cut.

Then remember that you never gave a shit about molecular psychokinetics to begin with, turn around, and go skiing.

^ooh man, where was all this input LAST Sept? Im a first year and I'm dying. The campus sucks, my courses are overwhelming, I've yet to meet any fellow skiers. Im already skipping classes and the season hasnt even started! I'm in for it!

The thing about UBC is that apparently this kind of attitude doesn't surface in people until 3rd year, so you don't have to suffer with it as long! YAY! Unless you're a graduate student... in which case I'm very, very sorry. By the way, if you do make it past first year, don't take any first year courses later on. No one needs to be reminded of the idiot they once were by being surrounded by impressionable first years who have yet to have their soul brutally ripped out of them by the pseudo-corporate machine (god knows all they give a fuck about is my money) that is post-secondary education. Staving off the jaded attitude is ultimately a lost cause. Once you first have that epiphany, realizing that your poli 240 TA knows less about the material than you do and also happens to be dumber than the chair she's sitting on, it's over. Just go, find a quiet corner in the cafeteria and commit seppuku. Trust me, it's better that way.

As an illustration of this, I've been in Koerner library since 1, it's now 3, it's looking like I'll be here til 10. You know what, the university of whistler is looking pretty good. Or would if all the fucking snow hadn't washed off.

By the way, Jay, you're looking at things completely wrong. Skipping classes is a GOOD thing, it's the only way to remain sane. In times of trouble, I personally begin a regimen of 1 skipped lecture per day. Try it, it helps a lot.

And now, back to summarizing my $130 textbook in preparation for yet another midterm.

and then there was u of c. I've lived in vancouver long enough to know not to go to sfu. ubc was an option, but it was time to go somewhere further away.

you see, at u of c, there are a lot of skiers. there are a lot of people who like to party. the majority of the student body speaks fluent english. and its not really that hard, going to class is kind of optional for the most part. and yes for what i'm taking (kines) it's one of the top schools in the country.

i'm 3rd year and still this positive, so there's gotta be something good going on here. i'm not even much of an optimist.

so yeah, just felt like sharing.

ps within 3 hours drive of calgary there is: cop, fortress, nakiska, sunshine, norquay, lake louise, panorama, fernie, kicking horse, castle, and jasper if you book it.

everyone says that SFU is depressing, but I'm from fucking Dawson Creek, so I think its cool. and yeah its all cement and stuff, but I look at it as more of a futuristic place, like the startrek voyager. and well sure there hasnt been alll the parties i expected but this way i do more work. and well unversity no matter where you go is gunna be hard, so any institution is gunna be as hell. My one complaint is all the rain I hate it!If anything should be falling form the sky it should be snow.

I'm a fan of SFU's campus... but that's all really. I don't really ever go there. Oh and JD, if you take UBC commerce you accelerate the jading process and go straight to hate at 2nd year. It's at that point you make the unconscious decision whther or not you'd like to be super or super-super-senior... maybe i'll go for the elusive triple-dog-senior. fuck, i used to be a good little student.

ya i used to be a good student too. then i got bored.

I like the look of SFU. the first time i went there (and only time) was for the breathe and stop premier. It was a clear starry night and twas beautiful. The buildings looked like some post-nuclear-war-lone-survivors-city-of-the-future-of-human-beings. I could totally see that place beign in star trek of Alien. but i would probably want to kill myself if i lived there

think of it this way... sfu is on a hill... hence.. its gets snow more thab UBC = more closures for snow than UBC... being an sfu alum ive seen this. it can be snowing and freezing ass cold on sfu and sunny and not too cold at ubc. some good tobaggoning on burnaby mtn park too when it snow.... grab a tray from the cafeteria and ur golden.

u can just not go to school you dont have to wait for a snow day, its a university not a elementry school. Just go to capp college, its the most chillin, there is a cap campus in squamish too, it proly sucks though

man, how could anyone stand real school at sfu. im taking 3 classes that are jokes at cap. by the end of my first day i hated it with a passion. i will see u in whistler alot this year dave, and next yr im goin to university there.

This party of one is about to drop back to none. Come Dec I'm done with school and headed to the hills!

punky2899- what grad program are you wanting to go into...that plays a pretty big role.

There are a ton of cool people who ski, climb, surf in the geosciences at UBC.

i am a failure at school. its absolutely fantastic. no stress, no homework. no days that im actually busy on.
