Hey NS im going into my senior year of high school and i need to decide what colleges im going to apply to, Im kinda freaking out cus my mom keeps yelling at me to find more colleges than the 3 that I really like so could you guys throw some places out that i could look at. I live in New England but am open to anything and obviously having good skiing nearby is HUGE, also a good engineering / science program is too

money is also gonna be a big factor so if you guys have any tips on saving as much as possibe; thatd be sick

Don't spend more than you make... Not real sure what else going into saving besides that. You sure you are not going to be a comm major?

Go hard on standardized tests, retake as many as you can, get scholarships.

University of MN. Good school, a research institution which is great for anything sciency. Fairly cheap for out of staters. And tow rope parks FTW!

University of Washington.

U of U

Northern Arizona

Going out of state isn't that much more money, you just gotta hustle to find scholarships. Apply to any and all regardless if you qualify.

Apply to at least one community college, one in-state public 4 year and one good private college. If you are already doing that then maybe look into a couple more schools like another private school. Your out of pocket cost will depend a lot on the grants and scholarships you get so sometimes the place with the higher sticker price is less expensive.

Ive never been to the msu campus, but I know Bozeman as a town is flipping awesome. University of MN is nice as well but if you want access to decent outdoors stuff you might be disappointed on account that it is in the middle of the city which is in the middle of...well...nothing exciting. Washington State is pretty nice as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I looked at most of them and MSU and defianely my favorite of the buch im surprused no one mentioned UVM though cus its on of my top choices

It isn't worth shit for skiing, but Purdue has a fantastic engineering program and is one of the best valued schools in the nation for the cost.

+1 for UVM since it's easier to stay on the east coast than to move out West (depending on the person of course, some don't care). Also slightly cheaper

Do you have test scores and a gpa? What state are you from? Are you looking at top schools too or for some that are relatively easy to get into? What are the 3 you're currently interested in?

yeah, college is certainly not the place to learn independence and broaden ones horizons.

I'm not saying that at all, some people don't want to deal with the hassle that is moving all your shit thousands of miles and having to pay for a flight any time you need/want to come home

Im from mass with a 4 gpa and 1350 sat score so i shouldnt have trouble getting into most schools also my parents and I are prettty open to me going across the country which is cool

"All your shit" is clothes and skis. That's really it. The rest is a $100 shopping trip to the local Target.

And 3 flights per year isn't bad at all. I, personally paid my tuition +expenses with a CC that gave me air miles so I never actually had to pay for a flight.

Going to school accross the country is a little more of a hassIe than going to school 3hrs away. I just don't think it's nearly the hassle you're making it out to be.

Awesome is awfully relative.

true dat

Stowe = 485 acres

Big sky=5,800 acres

You are comparing apples to oranges of course you are going to get bigger mountains out west just because of the geography, also Stowe is not 485 acres and I'm pretty sure you can have an "awesome time skiing anywhere if you are creative"

^ I'm clearly ignorant Stowe is listed at 485 acres however people who ski there will know that there is a lot of the mountain (glades etc.) that they do not list I will be the first to admit however that it does say 485 on their website.

Sure. You can also have fun rallying around a stock '96 Honda civic, but a tuned '16 GTR is one helluva lot more fun and a car I'd rather have.

It is comparing apples to oranges though- you're right.

He can easily get a scholarship with a 4.0 gpa and 1350 sat

I'm from MA like op, had a 3.8, and 1380 SAT, all I got from them was 8,000 and it was a loan, not even a scholarship.

It varies for everyone and UVM is a great school but if you can't afford it Op don't put youself in debt, theres plenty of other options which will be fine.

Umass amherst would practically take you in for free since your a MA resident with such good scores, Umaine Orano is another cheaper one with a good engineering program, neither are super close to skiing but close enough. I didn't look out west too much though so I'm sure you could do better out there in regards to skiing

Thats interesting some schools out west are so appealing because most are signifigantly cheaper than a lot of schools in the north east

Really?? I had a slightly lower GPA than you (unweighted at least) and they gave me 17 a year. Just proves how much of a shitshow admissions is at most schools.

1) what other scholarships did you research and apply for? I went out of state, averaged a 3.3 GPA and had enough scholarships to make it cheaper than an instate school. IDK what the situation is like at youre school though. I, personally, just applied for everything and anything that was available, regardless of if i qualified.

2) THe undergrad school you go to ONLY matters when applying for your first job. After that, its workplace performance... period. In engineering, you learn the same damn stuff as the next college. a BS in civil Engineering from Stanford learned the same material as a BS from the lowest rated state school. And any school below that of the top 15 schools in the country are all viewed the same in the workforce.

that is to say, pick the school you like the most, and see as most conducive to learning to live a productive life in the manner you see as best.

Kind of threadjacking a little bit here but does anyone know of some smaller schools that are close to good resorts and also have good football programs? Depending on what happens my Junior and Senior HS seasons I'll make a decision but any helpful insight would be appreciated

Plymouth State in NH is pretty nice. You're within a short drive from Loon, Waterville, and Cannon (even Tuckerman's), and they're pretty big on skiing. It's a good decision for a good east coast skier's school for half the cost for UVM if you're out of state.
