College. University of Vermont or University of Utah?

University of Vermont is a lot closer to me (I live in south Salem, NY), but I'm really looking to go to a College that isn't crappy, and that has park skiers (like me), and a lot of them. I feel that University of Utah would be dope because the tuition is basically half of UVM's tuition, and the acceptance rate is higher. Not to mention that there is much better skiing there, so I think there will be a lot more and better park skiers and people who have interests like mine. One of the main problems is that my family would much rather have me go to UVM, because it is not half way across the country. What are your guys thoughts?

Sounds like you answered your own question bud. Go to Utah 100%. If you're gonna pay tons of cash for an education, you might as well get the most bang for your buck and go somewhere dope.

dont put yourself in debt for college especially if you are going to work in the ski industry. I really wanted to go to UVM for the same reasons as you OP, but my family couldn't afford it. Ended up going to UMF instead for like 1/3 the cost and could not be happier.

I go to Weber State in Ogden (about 35 min north of UofU). Snowbasin is only a 30 min drive and its sick. You also get a free powder mountain pass just for staying in the dorms. Way cheaper than UofU too. Ski/Snowoard club has some off campus housing too for all your partying needs. Overall pretty sick

U of U is full of people looking to shred and Utah offers amazing terrain and an excellent education. Make the move west and never look back

I have an alternative. Stay at home and go to a nicer community college for the first two years, it'll make your transition into college easier and cheaper!

Get a job and sacrifice two years out west to save up some fat cash and get good grades. Then transfer to the u of u, it'll be cake and improve your chances in getting accepted or being able to switch into a good program. Plus you won't be ripped apart by the skiers inevitable existential crisis (as early). Good luck

Burlington is fun. I work at UVM. If cost isn't an issue, id say UVM and then you have Bush Smuggs and Stowe all within an hour drive.

I'm on the same boat... as of now it looks like Utah is the best bet when it comes to out of state tuition.

it's worth noting that utah makes it really easy to get instate tuition after 1 year as well...

never been to uvm but i do go to the u and it sounds like it meets your criteria

UVM was better when I was looking at schools but idk now I'd go to the U to avoid living in vermont. if you're thinking skiing, you'll be lucky to get 2 of 4 solid seasons back east. SLC is a major hub and like 10 great resorts close by and many more within weekend range

Definitely check out Montana State (Bozeman) just 45 min from Big Sky and about 20 from Bridger Bowl and they have shuttles there and free passes for students I believe, not as far as Utah, with great skiing!

What degree will you be majoring in? What are your plans to use that degree after you graduate? Does the typical job in the field you're looking at yield a high enough salary to pay off your student loans, live on your own, and pay for skiing?

You don't have to lock into a 4 year degree program if it doesn't align with your life plan right now. You could just get a job at some dope mountain out west for a few years and enroll in the closest community college to start racking up credits.

I was also between UVM and the U and ultimately I came to the U because their engineering program is way better and the tuition is like half. In terms of moving halfway across the country it's not that bad Im from PA and salt lake is real easy to get to. There's a super dope outdoors community out here and you'll always find people to shred. If you've got any questions feel free to pm.

I get that if your parents are paying for your school they want to put in their opinions, but if you want to go out west go out west. We have airplanes these days that can get you home for the holidays.

Idk. If you think you would be happier at U of U it would be ridiculous to go to VT just to please your parents.

My $.02

yeah free buss to bridger and 3 dollar bus to big sky

I went to UVM and lived in SLC.

Skiing in UT is infinitely better than VT, but VT will still be better than what you've had in NY and the park scene is strong. I skied a lot at UVM and have many, many fond memories of powder days and slushy park laps. I think UVM probably has the strongest snow culture of any University.

Burlington is an infinitely better place to go to college than SLC.

Think about what you want to study and compare the individual schools within the schools.

Great assesment. I also went to college in VT and lived in slc with a snowbird pass during the big year ('10-11). I was 21 when in utah and had very little fun off the mountain. Vermont has much better people, music, culture, laws... but utah has better pow quality and quantity. Western Montana has the best of all those things but less of a park n pipe scene

I am currently a freshman at the university of utah. pm me with any specific questions. Overall I love it here,

Pros: lots of skiers, beautiful chicks, easy to score bud, good sports teams, not to hard to get into, easy to get in state tuition, close to major mountains, tons to do, dont have to live in the dorms your first year, party scene is pretty good

Cons- out of state tuition is a little expensive, its harder to get alcohol out here.... not much else

UVM still has lots of park skiers, it is a smaller campus than Utah if that's what you want. University of Utah has a huge campus, much better skiing, closer to campus than mountains near UVM. Both you will have skiers with common interests, good education and lots of fun

Well if your the one paying tuition, then even if your family wants you to go to UVM go to Utah because that's what you seem to want and ur paying

My .02 on this is think about the long run. If you pick a school based on education rather than skiing you'll be more likely to get a good paying job near ski mountains later in life, or even right out of school. Schools with lower acceptance rates often have placement (find you a job right out of school) where as your open access institutions will give you help with your resume and thats about it.

sounds pretty dope ill look into that

I know this was like a year ago but I had the same two options and couldn't decide at first. Chose Utah and it seemed to be the call according to everyone's votes. SKO UTES

Another option to consider is to move to SLC, take your basic prerec classes at Salt Lake Community College for the first year because its cheap. After a year of residency and getting a drivers license and stuff you qualify for in state tuition which is crazy cheap at the U of U.

ya I've heard that UVM is dope af but for near 70 grand a year because im out of state it doesn't seem worth it.

When it came time for me to choose schools it came down between UVM and U of U for me as well. Ultimately I chose to go to the U because I grew up on the east coast and I wanted to experience something different, both are good schools but Utah will certainly expose you to a different culture.

I don’t know why this was downvoted I know a ton of people who have done something similar to save cash. Just bc you start at a community college isn’t something that should necessarily be

frowned upon. Pretty good advice if you ask me.

South Salem NY? I can't resist. Go to college in Salem Oregon. You'll stay in Salem and travel to an actual west coast state. Pretty close to Mt. Hood and the beach. Willamette U is a top rated private school and Chemeketa is a top 2 year community college ( just get an Oregon address for 90 days prior and you'll get instate tuition.)

You’re an adult. Who gives a shit where your parents want you to go? Don’t be a pussy. Utah is the obvious choice.

In case his parents are helping pay for college, insurance, phone, etc.

Made that same decision for pretty much the same reason +Utah is cheaper Out of State and easier to get In-State tuition as well, which I'm going to attempt to get after my first year

UVM is 42.5k out of state with out room and board unless your rich or get scholarships it seems steep. However there is a great skiing culture there and Burlington is a lot of fun also the girls are probably better. your gonna find a lot of different types of skiers there. Mad River Glen, Sugarbush, Smuggs, Bolton valley, Stowe are all within an hour and jay is about an 1hr 20min and they get the same quality snow as the western mtns. If you want a better college experience outside of just skiing your gonna get it the schools crazy. Iv been to SLC and Burlington and they don't compare. Also so sick skate parks there if your into that. Overall i think theres a richer more cultured experience skiing.

Westminster college in Salt Lake City has a cool program where you get to ski like 3pr 4 days a week. You should look into them. If you’re willing to go really far west you could look into Portland state university, I went there for a semester and had a lot of fun skiing mt hood. Uvm is pretty good too, lots of fun places to hang out in Burlington. I live in Winooski which is the next town over.
