Who else is being affected by this college strike in Ontario??

For those who dont know what is happening in Ontario's Community Colleges, is the teacher are going on strike as of midnight tonight.

i am out of college now, but i did go to an ontario college.

I think this strike - and strikes in general - are complete bullshit. Its not like they are exactly starving. Tens of thousands of people would kill for a job with the security, benefits, pension, pay etc that those union members have.

I have a lot of friends going to school in ontario, and its going to seriously fuck up their plans. I've got friends who are starting placement, deals done, but it might get fucked up because of the unions greed. bunch of bastards.

word i go to algonquin in ottawa and there on strike to no shcoo for meeeee...yet it sucks at the same time cause im paying for it

You are fucking retarted. Do you have any idea how many people suffered and died to create unions? The strike is a unions only way to fight back. Before strikes workers had no job security and very poor wages. Suffering is all realitive, sure there are tens of thousands of people in third world countries that would love to have a union job but the sad fact is that there parents were not as lucky and they did not work as hard to get there. Its like this Bush shit. United Airlines mechanics are completly screwed they got their retirement benifits removed, all their stock options, and wages way below competing airlines. So the striked right? Wrong president Bush revoked their constitutional right to strike why? Because he can because the senate is too afraid to shoot down any of his bills since 911. Patrioit act, home land security, ect. Basically stop being such a shit head and realize what properly run unions stand for and where they came from.

easy there flame boy.

I KNOW why unions were created, and i KNOW what they are supposed to do, but unfortunately at this point they servce another purpose. They are used to protect jobs of people who are incompetant, and bully changes.

The only people who object to union reforms are union members or children of union members who have never know different.

This is the part I am refering to if you would have made a corherent reply other than this I woulden have been so pissed. You cant just issue a blanket statement about unions sucking and not back it up.

A lot of the universities in the U.K. are on strike as well today. I'm not too fussed as I'm only missing 1 lecture.

My lecturers are all smart, hard working people and I respect their right to strike if they don't think they are being paid fairly.

Did you hear the deal they threw out. A 12.9 percent salary increase over 4 years. Meaning by 2009 they will be making on average $94,600.00 per year. FOR ONLY 8 MONTHS WORK! FUCKING BULLSHIT!

Its not like their jobs are hard anyway. They teach for a maximum of 5 hours a day. Add in the little bit of marking they do plus a TINY bit of preperation they put into class and they maybe put in an 8 hour day. MY OLD MAN BUST'S HIS ASS FOR 12 EVERY DAY!

I mean suck it up. Really! These teachers have one of the easiest jobs on the planet.

1.Dedicated students

2. No onus on them to make kids learn

3. FIVE AND A HALF MONTHS OFF!

4. Health benifets.

5. massive union power

I am sick of these over paid, under worked weseals walking off an already easy job for a bullshit reason!

My lecturers all have their own research to do, which they spend their holidays and non teaching time doing. They do get funding for this, but not very much. It might be different in the U.S. but here they work pretty hard.

The way I see it, if profs can strike, then so can students, at any time, without losing out on grades or failing anything, so long as they have some sort of clue as to why they're striking.

yes a maximum of 5 hours at work,

but im sure they spend hours preparing lessons, correcting tests and papers, and doing re-search and what not. And yes sometimes helping students outside of class. Ive had profs who have given me hours of personal help on their own time.

Why pay them so much? Well its pritty simple there the only ones with education and degree capable of teaching at that level. Lots of them did over 7 years of universiy, think that deserves a decent pay.

My mom is a teacher, and I assure you she spends more then 12 hours a day working even though she is paid for six.

And many schools do summer sessions, therefore they dont receive a five month holiday.

you've gotta understand we're talking colleges in ontario. You just need ANY degree and some type of relevant experience.

Example: One of my teachers was fired for poor performance...and the course he was teaching was essentially what he was fired for.

yeah there are a number of articulation agreements available. For some courses its excellent, others its bullshit.

one of the main reasons they are striking is going to help us in the long run. They want more teachers, smaller classes and better equipment in the labs. Theses are some of the main topics

unions are all that bad, i have one where i work too. the nice thing about them, they cant fire you or lay you off for any reason. my boss is a idiot, and doesnt pay us properly but the union fixed it.

I go to algonquin too, and were on strike, and im goin to montreal to be irresponsible and spend my march's rent.

uh oh,

its gonna be funnn

I found this sweet deal at Whistler. 7 days of lift tickets for $200 right after my exams would finish... if there wasn't a strike. Now school will probably run until mid-May and I won't have time for a trip before the snow melts.

"Did you even read what I wrote?

I fucking love Kevin Federline."

What does that have to do with anything?

Oh wait, signature.
