College Is So Not Worth It

It doesnt need to be backed by silver or gold, all they are is metals, you cannot eat gold, and it does not shelter you. What we need is production. As long as goods are being produced, we will be fine.

Inflation though, well that is just the cycle we are in now. Here is my shitty MS paint diagram

The problem with this however, is the lag in getting the facts about our economy (it is usually a couple months before we know what the economy was really doing at the time) and then the time on top of that debating what to do in congress and ultimatley making a decision, at which time the economy may already be recovering or slowing causing us to deviate further away from stability. Inflation goes down, unemployment goes up and vice versa (nearly all the time unless stagnation).

"Money is a veil, productivity is the true measure of wealth." - Milton Friedman

(sorry for cliche, overused quote, but I think it fits.)

Honestly, its not worth it. Not if your going just to shut your mother up. Save your money and keep college for the people with real intuition.Ski all winter, work like an animal all summer, pocket some cash, find a boyfriend. What else is summer good for?

It really depends on your career ambitions. There are jobs out there in the trades that can earn you hundreds of thousands a year without a college or university degree.

If you have the drive and ambition to do something, say start a company, do that first, go to college only if you know it'll give you valuable skills or connections to further your career.

Also, Ray Kroc didn't go to college or university, and he was the mastermind behind what we now know as McDonald's.

What about Canadian university? anyone look into that i live in Canada and its wayyy cheaper here . No bs dept to pay back

Gold is worth something though. It has monetary value all over the world. IT's one thing if we were doing something to curb inflation. Instead we just keep printing off more. Especially when we hit something like the recession. Instead of going through it and moving on, we just keep at the same bad policies.

Look at the prices rising. Just because were accustomed to it doesn't mean it's a good thing. Printing more money to try to pull out of economic trouble doesn't exactly hold the best record. It's all fun and game till you need 1000 dollar bill to buy groceries. I know where not close to that yet, but inflation isn't going down.

As long as they keep printing money out, there not doing anything good for the economy

There are colleges in Canada?

Just kidding, it probably has something to do with citizenship. I doubt an American could go to college in Canada for the same price a Canadian does, although I have never even thought about that.

The American system is fucked though. There is absolutely no reason everyone should not receive a free college education based on merit. College is less about learning and more about profit now. The sad thing is Americans are too stupid to realize that education is the most important thing in America. But it is always the first to get budget cuts.

I have always been a proponent of a type of government sponsored 2 year program, it would be optional. But what you do is say that your college will be paid for if you spend 2 years in government service. During this time you would not get paid or anything but your needs would be taken care of. I am not talking about military service, although this could be an option, I am talking about public service. You spend time helping in schools, hospitals, any type of public service that the government currently has to pay for. Even what state taxes go towards, cleaning up parks, snow removal, whatever. You work for 2 years making the world a better place then you can go to any public college (that you have the grades and test scores) you want. Of course this will never happen in America because people are retarded (tea baggers) and believe that social programs like this are socialist. I also think the right to vote should be tied to this program but that is a different can of worms.

Oh i agree we shouldn't be printing money right now, it is certainly going to result in inflation (and a bunch of angry old people). Only 25 billion of the 750 billion dollar stimulus has actually made its way into the economy, and the economy could be recovered before much more gets in. If that happens, flooding a stabilizing economy with half a trillion dollars will surely result in some significant inflation. Good for students with loans though, just makes the amount of money they have to pay back worth less. And yes, gold is worth something, but it should not have too much attention paid to it. Look at mercantile Spain, they sent voyages all over the globe just collecting gold and stockpiling it. Spain had massive amounts of gold, yet the people starved. Then during the same period, you have Denmark promoting entrepreneurship and making access to capital easy and you have a massive brain gain in which people flocked to Denmark to start business and it completely boomed.... all with little gold. I'm not totally negating the value of gold, as it can be traded on the free market, but gold in itself, just sitting in a room stockpiled, is worth nothing. Spain put all of its effort into finding gold that it couldn't feed itself. That and protecting certain business' and causing others to go under (Sheeo hearding).

sorry for the rant, but I do agree with you that inflation will occur on a significant level soon.

i think thats an excellent idea, ive always wished something like that existed on a large scale. but like you said the right to vote through that is pretty questionable haha

I am from the states and i go to school in Canada and only pay 14,000$ each year and only have to go three years to get my bachelor's degree vs. the four i would be going in the states.

yeah you start at 45k no matter where you begin work. but you can't move airports until you "check out" or finish the training at that specific airport, which like i said takes at the most 2 years. getting into a good airport early is the only real concern i have. i mean you get to pick a region and can turn down offers from airports you don't like, but you can only do it so many times haha.

anyways smail i'm still waiting for your smartass rebuttal.

I feel like most of the kids in here are 16 years old and brainwashed by their highschool counselors. . .

I hear you at the begnning. But wtf to the ending. Gold stockpiled is worth nothing? Even just 10 years ago you could get gold for around 300 an oz. Now it's up too over 1100.

"but gold in itself, just sitting in a room stockpiled, is worth nothing."

Gold is always worth something. If you need something that can be used in any country, with tribes with anyone, gold coins are a better bet than usd.

The amount of usd in circulation looks a lot like al gores chart on global warming. We're never going to take that money out of circulation. We're just going to keep printing more, and more.

You are misunderstanding what I am trying to say. Gold's value is dependent on production. If the world were to suddenly move a large amount of their resources into harvesting or attaining gold it would cause serious inflation along with diminishing the value of the gold itself. Taking producers away from a trade to search for gold would result in less inventories and create a higher aggregate demand. As aggregate supply diminishes due to less production as the demand is rising, massive inflation would start to occur. Gold in a room stockpiled for one person, yes that is a lot, but if everybody started doing it, it would cause serious problems. Gold is a fine investment, but simply stockpiling gold is not a secure way to sustain an economy.

youre entitled to your opinion on philosophy being bullshit, but your "reason" is total bullshit and makes me think youve never taken a class in it or done any reading in it before

I mean I've read Republic and some of Plato and Socrate's other stuff. I really like the idea of the dialectic and I don't deny the impact of the two and Aristotle of you like. But it's just so boring to me. And we have Science now. Which should trump everything.

As a canadian citizen in Alberta, probably one of the worst places for education funding and pretty much general liberal-ness, I still only pay 5000 a year. Gov't heavily subsidizes education throughout canada, and as far as I know most other westen countries in the world are similar. The US education system is fucked. The amount of cash you have to pay to get an education is ridiculous, and the pros of college are diminished because of this. That said, university is one of the best experiences of my life. You meet so many awesome people, you learn how to work hard, you learn some crazy things (especially in higher level courses), and for four years you have something that separates you as clearly superior on a resume to someone lacking that experience. I'm in my last semester of my honours degree in Philosophy. Do you think I'm gonna be raking in 60k a year next year? FUCK NO! I'm gonna make probably the exact same money I'm making right now. But maybe in a few years I will get some sort of white collar career job, and then a degree begins to make a difference. Or maybe I'll do a masters in a professional program (EG: law, architecture) and then I'll probably be making mad cheddar.
Either way, my total tuition costs are gonna be around 20-25k for four years of education. If you're not paying US college prices, why the fuck not go to college. At the very least you'll party lots and get laid.

If you are stupid enough to believe that college actually isn't worth it, don't bother going to college because you will surely fail

You think people are stockpiling gold to try to save the economy? Maybe I read you wrong yet again. Idk. When most people buy gold or silver they do it to protect their own wealth. Inflation Is actually good for them.

That's why I'm investing in silver. It's so valuable in industry and so dirt cheap right now that it alway has enough of a use to hold it's value I think at least. I can't really see it going down a ton, but can easily see it rising even more.

Plus a lot of the silver mined is used in industry. Gold is stored for the most part. There is always the chance, though ridiculously slim, that we could run into a silver shortage that would drive the prices up.

Even without that, It's a pretty good investment. It has a lot of potential to rise. The rush that already happened sent it over 50 an oz. And that's not inflation adjusted. The potential for growth is really there. gold will keep rising, but unless some thing crazy happens, I can't see quite as much growth potential.

first off, architects dont really make bank unless they are very well known and respected. Otherwise, its just at the higher end, around 100,000k if they are good.

The economy isn't going to be like this forever. There are many areas of architecture/design I can go. I have at least 4-5 years of school left(Im getting 2-3 masters degrees). There are areas of architecture that will always have work. Hospitals, research buildings, and many other things aren't affected. Even with my undergrad, you dont have to go into architecture. You can get management jobs, construction, graphic design, industrial design, amoung other things. Anyways, I can get into city planning as well.

YOu have the worst generalizations ever. From a 60,000 job to delivering pizzas. If people actually search for jobs, they would at least get something for 40-50 k a year. They aren't going to be delivering pizzas. No one has ever told me all architects make bank. The first thing my college showed me as a freshman was a graph showing architects made the lowest starting salary out of the other majors in our college, and only a few made a lot of money.

im sure as hell not going to have to look hard for a job when I have a masters in architecture, city planning, and urban design.

I dont graduate till may 2011 with my bachelors. Then im going skiing for a year. I wont graduate grad school till 2015 or 2016. I should be fine other than getting an internship. but yeah, thanks.

I know a lot of people that have gotten internships and jobs, but yeah. they are hard to find.
